Donald R. McIntosh Obituary

Donald R. McIntosh, 63, of 43587 Hibbetts Mill Rd., Wellsville, was pronounced dead on arrival at City Hospital Friday at 11:01 a.m. He had been in failing health for some time.
Mr. McIntosh was born Dec. 6, 1912, in East Liverpool, a son of Clement McIntosh and Leah Hottel McIntosh. He retired in 1975 because of poor health from the Stevenson Co, where he had been employed as a burner. He was a member of the Yellow Creek United Presbyterian Church.
In addition to his widow, Mrs. Fife McIntosh, at home, survivors include five sons, Fred McIntosh of Rossford, Ohio, Donald McIntosh of Jackson, Mich., Raymond McIntosh of Cleveland and James McIntosh and Richard McIntosh; three daughters, Mrs. Leonard (Barbara) McManus of Jackson, Mich., Mrs. John (Agnes) McCarron and Miss Sharon McIntosh both of Wellsville, and 17 grandchildren.
Services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the MacLean Funeral Home in Wellsville by the Rev. David G. Vellenga. Burial will be in Yellow Creek Church Cemetery.

EAST PALESTINE—Mrs. Sarah E. VanKirk, 251 E. North Ave., a resident of this area for some 40 years, died this morning about 7 at the Youngstown South Side Hospital.
Mrs. VanKirk, 88, had suffered a hip injury in a fall last week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Russell Harrold, with whom she resided, and had been in Salem City Hospital.
A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mears, she was born at Stoneboro, Pa., Sept. 15, 1869. She was married in 1909 to Alex VanKirk, who died in 1944.
Besides her daughter, she is survived by a son, Charles VanKirk of Akron, and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the VanDyke Funeral Home by the Rev. E. G. Diehm of The Church of the Brethren of Woodworth. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery at Youngstown.

Mrs. Clara Firth Laughlin of Eggertsville, N. Y., a native of East Liverpool, died Tuesday night at the Deaconess Hospital in Buffalo, following a long illness. She was 68.
Mrs. Laughlin was born in East Liverpool, a daughter of the late Greenwood and Sarah Firth. She was a graduate of East Liverpool High School. She moved to New York about 38 years ago.
Survivors include her husband, Carl Laughlin at home; a daughter, Mrs. Sara Hartmetz of Cheektowaga, N. Y.; two brothers, S. R. Firth of Westlake and John Firth of East Liverpool; three sisters, Mrs. John G. Hohmann of Steubenville and Miss Emily Firth and Miss Irene Firth, both of East Liverpool and a granddaughter.
Services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Malzen Funeral Home in Buffalo by the Rev. Glen V. Altz of Christ Methodist Church. Burial will be there.

Funeral services were held Thursday fro Daniel Harrison Beaver, former East Liverpool potter who died of a heart attack Aug. 4 at his home in Zephyrhills, Fla., after an illness of five years. He was 69.
A native of Racine, he was employed at the Edwin M. Knowles China Co. as a kilnplacer for 30 years before retiring and moving to Florida in 1945. He resided in East Liverpool about 55 years, last living in Pleasant Heights.
He was a member of the IBOP and the Seventh-Day Adventist church.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Edna Beaver of Zephyrhills; a daughter, Mrs Lorenso Kemp of Tampa; four sons, William Beaver of St. Petersburg, Daniel H. Beaver of East Liverpool, Kenneth Beaver of Tampa and Ronald Beaver of Louisville, Ohio, and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. at the Lairs Funeral Home in Zephyrhills, with burial in Oakville Cemetery there.

WEIRTON—Robert Thomas Lucas, 53, superintendent in the electrical department of the Weirton Steel Co., died early today of carbon monoxide fumes from his car at his home. He had been ill several weeks.
He was born July 9, 1905, in Steubenville, a son of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Thomason Lucas, and resided in Weirton for 23 years.
A graduate of Cornell University, he was a member of the Cove Presbyterian Church, Northern Panhandle Shrine Club, Belmont Shrine Club, New Cumberland Masonic Lodge 22, Hancock County Masonic Chapter 14, Weirton Commandery 30, Osiris Temple, Royal of Jesters, Wheeling Court 12, Elks Lodge 1801, Weirton Hospital Co., Weirton Community Center, Williams Country Club of Weirton and the West Virginia Society of Professional Engineers.
Surviors include his widow, mrs. Betty Rogers Lucas; a daughter, Beth Lucas, and a son Robert Lucas, all at home. Service arrangements by the Steel & Wolfe Funeral Home are incomplete.

Philip Susie, 1229 Midland Ave., a pioneer resident who came to Midland in 1906, died Tuesday afternoon at 3:39 at the Rochester General Hospital after a brief illness. He was 83.
He was a retired businessman and had operated a bar and restaurant at 4th ST. and Midland Ave. for 18 years. Mr. Susie was born May 2, 1875, in Italy and was a member of the Presentation Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, Dr. Alfred Susie of Baytown, Tex., Anthony Susie of Pekin, Ill, and Albert Susie at home; three daughters, Mrs. Anne Gasbarine and Mrs. Emma Aloi of Midland and Miss Elsie Susie at home, and 12 grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the church with a solem Hig Requiem Mass. Burial will be in Beaver Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Schwerha Funeral Home after 7 tonight.

LISBON—Norman A. Lutton, 78, of 315 Caldwell Ave., died at 6:30 a.m. today in Salem Central Clinic, where he had been a patient three weeks..
He was born Jan. 1, 1888 in East Palesting, a son of Harry R. and Elizabeth Patterson Lutton, and lived in the Lisbon area since 1922.
Mr. Lutton was a member of the Rogers Christian Church. He was employed at the American Vitrified Products Co. plant on the Lisbon – Elkton Rd. before retiring in 1953.
His wife, Harriet, died Jan. 21, 1965. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Swartz of Lisbon and Mrs. Madalyne Pratt of Medford, Ore.; a brother, Russell C. Lutton of Lisbon; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Eells-Leggett Funeral Home, with Minister Glenn Logston of the North Beaver ST. Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be in Carmel Cemetery, near Rogers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

EAST PALESTINE—William J. Werner, 56, of 148, W. Adam St. died Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at home after suffering a heart attack earlier while unloading coal.
Mr. Werner was born in Pittsburgh Jan. 1, 1911, a son of Adolph Werner and Augusta Mielke Werner, who reside in Mahoningtown, Pa., R.D. 7. he was a machinist for the Pennsylvania Railroad Co., where he worked for 30 years. He had resided in East Palestine for 29 years and was a member of the trinity Presbyterian Church here and the Odd Fellows Lodge of Enon Valley.
He also is survived by his widow, Mrs. Grace L. Shannon Werner, whom he married Dec. 31, 1937; four sons, Kenneth Werner, Wesley Werner, Russell Werner and Lester Werner, all at home and two brothers, Harry Werner of Mahoningtown and Walter Werner of New Galilee, R. D. 1.
Ser vices will by held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at eh VanDyke Funeral Home in East Palestine by the Rev. Thomas Hammerton of the Centenary Methodist Church and the Rev. Andrew Wilch of the Grace Lutheran Church, both of East Palestine. Burial will be in Glenview Cemetery.

Mr. Booth, formerly of East Liverpool, died Thursday at 1:25 p.m. in St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica following a two day illness.
A World War I veteran, he was born here March 10, 1892, a son of Fred Booth and Mary A. Davison Booth. He move to California in 1954 and was a retired specification writer of the Los Angeles Water Department.
He was a member of the American Bar Association, Scottish Rite of New Castle, the Medinah Shrine Temple of Chicago and Riddle Masonic Lodge 315 here.
Survivors include a brother, Harry Booth of Akron.

MECHANICSTOWN – Howard M. Johnston, 8, of 8284 Blossom Rd., died Friday at 4:45 p.m. at home following an apparent heart attack.
A retired livestock dealer, Mr. Johnston was born Oct. 5, 1895, in Fox Township, a son of Thomas Johnston and Annie Orwick Johnston. He was a lifetime area resident and was a member of the United Presbyterian Church at Scroggsfield.
His wife, Lena Johnston, died last November.
Survivors include two sons, Wilfred (Bud) Johnston of Salineville, RD 3 and Clifford Johnston of Lisbon; three daughters, Mrs. Wilfred (Louise) Marshall of Mechanicstown, Mrs. Frederick (Marjorie) Hemming of Carrollton and Mrs. Edwin (Vera) Palmer of Bergholz; two brothers, Fred Johnston of Salineville and Walter Johnston of Alliance; a sister, Mrs. Florence Fergason of Salineville; 14 grandchildren and 15 freat-grandchildren.

Services will be held Tuesday for Robert Lewis Anderson, 48, of 407 Pine Grove, Rd., Ohio View, Industry, who died Saturday afternoon at Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a long illness.
Mr. Anderson was born Feb. 27,1929, in Salamanca, N. Y. a son of Judson Anderson and Isabel Hilliard Anderson.
He served with the submarine service in the Navy from 1948 until 1968. While in the Navy, he was a CPO on the second U. S. Atomic Powered Submarine, “SeaWolf.” Mr. Anderson worked as operation supervisor of the Duquesne Light Co. at the Shippingport Nucular Plant and the Beaver Valley Nuclear Plant1.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Pearl Anderson, survivors include two sons, William Anderson and Robert B. Anderson; a daughter, Miss Cheryl Anderson, all at home; a brother, Allison Anderson of Toronto; two sisters, Mrs. Taylor (Elloween) White of Messa, Ariz., and Mrs. Thomas (Sandy) Malley of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Dickey was employed as a mutual clerk at Waterford Park, and was a member of the Service Employes International Union.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Betty Dickey, at home, and two brothers, Daniel O. Dickey of Germany and H. Kelsey Dickey of Indiana.

Thomas C. Lyons, 26, of Shippingport, husband of Cynthia Szatkowski Lyons, died this morning at 1:30 at Rochester General Hospital after a week’s illness.
He was born in East Liverpool April 4, 1940, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl F. Lyons, who now reside in Chester. He was a carpenter at the St. Joseph Lead Co. in Monaca. He was a member of the Presentation Catholic Church of Midland and served four years with the Navy.
In addition to his widow, he leaves two daughters, Debbie Lynn Lyons and Theresa Ann Lyons, both at home; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd (Doc) Lyons of Chester; a sister, Mrs. Robert Simpson of Chester Route @ and a brother, Michael Lyons of Chester.
Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Midland church by Fr. Stephen J. Burdis. Burial will be in Beaver Cemetery.

Theodore Cheney, 79, of Westfield Rd., a World War I veteran, died Tuesday at 10 p.m. at City Hospital after an illness of two years.
A native of Ravenswood, W. Va., Mr. Cheney was born Sept. 25, 1887, a son of the late Russell Cheney and Lodena Hutchinson Cheney. He came here in 1910 and worked as a harnessmaker until 1923, when he left for Toledo, where he was employed as an upholsterer for an auto plant. He returned here two years ago. He was a member of the Ceramic City band.
He is survived by a brother Emmett Cheney of Westfield, and a sister, Mrs. Thodosia Wood of East Liverpool
Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. B. E. McDonald of the LaCroft Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

Born in Darlington Township June 16, 1913, she married Frank Likovich in 1934.
Besides her husband and two children, Arlene and Arthur, at home, she is survived by five sisters, Mrs. Ann Dresher of Chicago, Mrs. Martha Stanonik of New Waterford, Mrs. Mary Mrak of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Miss Florence Marek and Mrs. Louise Serjack of Bessemer, and two brothers, Frank Macek of Girard and Albert Marek of East Palestine.
Services will be held Wednesday morning at the Bessemer Catholic Church. Burial will be at Bessemer.

EAST PALESTINE—Mrs. Amber Shasteen, 205 W. Martin ST., a resident of this community 18 years, died today at 7 a.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Earl Morriw, 483 Alice St. She was 85.
She was born in West Elizabeth, Pa., Nov. 24, 1867, a daughter of the late John and Ann Miller Bradley, and was married to the late William P. Shasteen Jan. 19. 1882. She resided in New Waterford until the death of her husband in 1934. She was a member of the New Waterford Methodist Church.
Besides Mrs. Morris, she is survived by another daughter, Miss Arlene Shasteen, at home, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Morris home by the Rev. William Thomas, pastor of the New Waterford Methodist Church. Burial will be in New Waterford Cemetery.

John Kotfer, 64, was found dead in the rear of his home, 637 Penn Ave., Midland early Saturday morning. He apparently died of a heart attack, police said.
His sister, Mrs. Mike Rosepiler, told police he reported off work at the Mackintosh-Hemphill Co. Friday morning, complaining of severe pains in his chest.
Born in Austria, June 25, 1888, he also is survived by two brothers, Michael Kotfer of Swissvale and George Kotfer of Gary, Ind.
Blessing service will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Schwerha Funeral Home by the Rev. Patrick Cullen, assistant pastor of the Presentation Catholic Church. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery.

Clarence R. Ward, 57, formerly of East Liverpool, died Sunday in the U. S. Veterans Hospital at Albuquerque, N. M., where he had been a patient for six months.
A potter, Ward left East Liverpool about eight years ago for Phoenix, Ariz. He was born in Portland, Meigs County, and spent most of his life in East Liverpool. He was a kilnman for the Harker Pottery Co. for many years. Ward was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Calvary Methodist Church and Local Union 9, IBOP.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Margaret Ward of Albuquerque, four sisters and two brothers, all except one in Portland. Lawrence Ward of Tucson, Ariz., and also a former East Liverpool resident, is a brother.
Rites will be held Tuesday at 9 a.m. in the Strong-Thorn Funeral home in Albuquerque. Burial will be there.

Margaret “Sis” Cullen Campbell, 96, of Weirton, formerly of New Cumberland passed away on Thursday, July 17, 2008.
She was born April 17, 1912, in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late Mark and Anna Settle Cullen. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Wade Campbell; a great-grandchild, Anne Renee Spiers and a sister, June McAtee.
Margaret graduated from New Cumberland High School and after graduating from West Liberty College, she taught at the Ferndale School, that at Jefferson, a one room school on Wiley Ridge. She then taught and retired as an elementary school teacher at the New Cumberland School. She was loved by her students and will always be remembered for her Jane and I stories.
She is survived by two daughters, Barbara “Bobbie” Seals Williams of Crocus, KY and Wadeanne (Nick) Nardo of Weirton; seven grandchildren, Stephan D. Seals, Mark W. Seals, Christine Seals Weimer, Joel Campbell Seals, Megen Smith, Mike Nardo and Tony Nardo; seventeen great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 21, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the New Cumberland Christian Church with Pastor Rick Tinsky officiating. Interment followed a the New Cumberland Cemetery.
The New Cumberland Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the New Cumberland Christian Church or the American Heart Association.

Lois E. Gray, 81, of Newell passed away on July 16, 2008 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
She was born April 15, 1927 in Viola, WV, a daughter of the late William Ross and Elizabeth Bray. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wade B. Gray and a son, Daniel W. Gray.
Lois, a homemaker, was Protestant by faith. She had worked at various establishments through out the Chester and Newell area.
She is survived by her son, Fred Gray of Steubenville, daughter-0in-law, Darlene Gray of Chester and grandchildren, Daniel, Fredrick W., Michael, Brandy, Candi, Kate, Lois and Taneka Gray; five great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services were held on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel with Pastor Tom Schneidmiller officiating. Interment followed at the Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

She was born November 21, 1927 in Germany, a daughter of the late Alsred and Katharina Gentzen Weimann.
Louise was retired from the Administration Office of the VA Hospital in Perry Point, MD where she worked as an assistant.
She is survived by a daughter, Kathy Vickers-Smith of New Cumberalnd and five sisters, Gertrude Sasse, Annliese Reinbacher, Ursula Malter, all of Germany Luise Stoklas of Canada and Lore Rieger of Green Bay, WI.
Private funeral arrangements were handled by the Nixon Funeral Home of Newell.

She was born September 23, 1958 in Riverhead, Long Island, New York, a daughter of Betty Bennett Daugherty of New Cumberland and the late Blaine Daugherty Sr.
She was a homemaker and a member of the Poet’s Society
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Lawrence K. Kelley, at home; a son, Shaun P. Kelley of McDonald, PA; three brothers, Blaine Daughtery J. and Darrell Daugherty, both of Weirton and Kenneth Daugherty of New Manchester; a sister, Penny K. Kenneth Michael Cullen, 52, son of New Cumberland native, Jum Cullen passed away July 10, 2008 at his home in Las Vegas.
“Skip” to all that knew him was born September 19, 1956.
He was a retired painter, with a tremendous mechanical inclination. If something in the neighborhood needed fixed, Skip was immediately sought out. As the eldest brother of three boys, Skip led the path in competitive sports, excelling in both football and baseball, and had a true passion for being outdoors. He remained forever diligent in protecting his family, especially his nephew “DJC”.

Anna Zagula, 98, of Fourth Street Chester, passed away Sunday, September 27, 2009 at Stone Pear Pavilion at Foxcrest where she had been a patient since May. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Verna and Stella Zagula; and four brothers, Julian, Charles, Walter, and Francis Zagula.
She was born August 14, 1911 in Chester, a daughter of the late Jacob and Sofia Bednarz Zagula.
A retired ware dresser at Homer Laughlin China Co, Anna was a life long member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester where she was a member of Ladies Guild.
She is survived by two sisters, Emily Mercina and husband Tom of Lisbon and Angie Kurty and husband Pete of Toronto; three nieces; one nephew; and several great nieces and great nephews.
Rev. Father Eric Antwi will be the celebrant for a mass of Christian burial with liturgy today, Thursday, Oct 1, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. a the church. Interment will be at Locust Hill Cemetery. Arner Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

He was born May 31, 1927 in Wirt County, WV, a son of the late Linzy and Mildred Haught Jones. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Russell Jones.
Denzil served in the United States Army as a Medic and retired as a kiln drawer at Globe Brick.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Halstead Jones at home, three daughters, Margaret (Don) Collins, Lottie (Dave) Barren and Marsha (Tad) Webber all of Newell; a son, Tom (Debra) Jones of Newell; six grandsons, Tommy Heath, Troy Barron, Andy Jones, Jason Jones, Scott Barron and Jackson Webber; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ada Potter of California and Glenna O”Neal of Iowa.
Services were held Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at the Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home with Pastor Scott Henry officiating. Interment followed at Shadow Lawn, Memory Gardens.

Gerald retired from Advanced Auto Parts. He was a member of the Victory of Live Church in Paris, the NRA, Lifetime History Channel and loved taking rides on his motorcycle.
He is survived by his wife Sharron May (Rogers) Morrison, at home; children Rose Ogbonna of Weirton and Christopher Morrison of Arizona; a sister, Nancy June (Charles) Brown of New Cumberland; and two grandchildren, Zach and Rachel of Weirton.

Roderick D. Heddle, 71, of Neptune Ave., Chester and formerly of Florida, passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2009 at East Liverpool City Hospital following a sudden illness.
He was born August 22, 1938, in Providence, RI, a son of the late David and Madeline Green Heddle.
A true entrepreneur in every sense of the word, Rod had owned and operated several different businesses. He was a thirty second degree Mason, a Shriner and a veteran of the U. S. Air Force.
He is survived by his wife, Joan L. Heddle, at home; three daughters, Sharon and Tracey Heddle of Connecticut, and Linda Beth Heddle of Florida; three stepdaughters, Sharyn Vinci of Chester, Linda Lee Vinci and Michelle Pelletier and husband Wayne of Florida; two stepsons, John Vinci and wife Sharon Nusser-Vinci of Georgetown and Mike Vinci and wife Stephany of East Liverpool; a sister Marion Whippie and husband Dick of New Hampshire; 14 grandchildren, John Vinci III, Nichole, Josh and Paiten Vinci, Tasha Bradford-Hall, Renee, Amber, and Ashley Pelletier, Kace Shmigal, Eric and Becky Herb, Tiffeny Heddle, Mark and Josh Fuller, and Lauren and Jarred Linville.

She was born January 18, 1957 in East Liverpool, a daughter of Feral and Amelia Kelly Beebout of New Cumberland.
Lynn graduated from Oak Glen High School, class of 1975. She formerly worked in the kitchen at Fox’s and as a cashier for Russ Davis IGA. She was a member of the Chester Church of the Nazarene.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Mark Beebout; maternal grandparents, Elmer and Katie Keller; and paternal grandparents, Harry and Vira Beebout
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, James Herrin of North Carolina; two sons, Eric Herrin and companion, Christine of East Liverpool and Brad Herrin of Chester, a stepdaughter, Lori Miller (Nelson) of Pennsylvania; eight grandchildren; a brother, Murdock Beebout and companion Dawn of Michigan; three sisters, Cindy Carney (Phil) of Toronto, Debra Walker (Bruce) of New Cumberland and Elizabeth “Libby” Beebout of Chester; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held September 22, 2009 at the Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Cummings officiating.

Gary R. Tuttle, 59, of Akron, and formerly of Chester, passed at his home on September 21, 2009 after becoming suddenly ill.
He was born December 3, 1949 in East Liverpool, a son of the late Ray and Ethel McGaffic Tuttle.
A Free Methodist by faith, Gary worked for Giant Eagle super markets. Earlier he had been employed at the Homer Laughlin China Co.
An accomplished musician, Gary began playing at the age of 12. Rock & Roll was his first foray in to the music world having played in such local favorites as King Tut and the Royal Subjects during the early 60’s at East Liverpool hot spots, Lake Marwin and he Youth Harbor. He soon found a love for country music and was an integral part of Bands like Nashville Bound, Masters of the Honkytonk and Hot Cargo. While leading Nashville Bound he released eight recordings and in 1987 won the Marlboro Country Music Roundup where they played on the same bill with George Straight, Alabama, and the Judds in front of a sold out crowd. He had opened for such formidable acts as Reba, Robbie McDowell, and his favorite Conway Twitty.
He leaves behind his deeply loved dog Samantha as well as a daughter, Tonya Link and her children, Tanner, Marissa, and Logan Link of Burgettstown; one son John Tuttle of Akron, and one sister Carole Smith and husband Denny of East Liverpool
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 26, at 12:00 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel with Rev. Norm Eckert officiating. Interment followed at the Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester. In addition a memorial service was held on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Akron Fraternal Order of Orioles in Akron.

Russell w. Gorby, 88, passed away at his home in St. Marys, WV on Saturday, September 19, 2009
He was born in Tyler County a son of the late John H. and Ala A. Baker Gorby. He also was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Mae Dailey Gorby; his second wife, JoAnn Gorby; a daughter, Millicent Gorby; three sisters, Ruby Wilson, Helen Hammontree and Susannah Baker; and a brother, John Gorby Jr.
A resident of Chester for most of his life, worked as a maintenance supervisor at the former Harker China Co. and had worked as a welder at the former Crucible Steel.
He proudly served his country during WWII with the Army in the Pacific Theater and was a lifetime member of Chester VFW Post 6450 and American Legion Post 121.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Smith of St. Marys and Michelle Swope of Paden City; three granddaughters, Elizabeth Fairbanks, Alexandra Smith and Laura Smith; and beloved friend, Linda Reynolds.
Graveside services were held Thursday, September 24, 2009 at the Pierpoint Cemetery in Tyler County where Pastor Jimmy Cooley officiated.

Charles W. Russell, 74, of Clement Way, a retired potter and a World War I veteran died this morning at 10:30 at City Hospital after an illness of several years.
He was born in Emporium, Pa., May 10, 1896. He had resided her for 45 years and was retired in 1961 from the Taylor, Smith and Taylor Co., where he worked as a kilnplacer. He attended the First Church of the Nazarene.
He is survived by six step-sons, Lawrence Coleman of Chester, Wayne Coleman, Richard Coleman, Jerry Coleman, Jack Coleman and Keith Coleman, all of East Liverpool; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Rhea) Howell of East Liverpool, Mrs. James (Charlene) Higgins of Negley and Mrs. Jerome (Ruth) Raimond of Chester; five stepdaughters, Mrs. Ruth Irwin, Mrs. Helen Plummer, Miss Dorothy Coleman and Mrs. Patricia Curry, all of East Liverpool, and Mrs. Violet Groves of Midland; a brother, Karl Russell of Emporium, and seven grandchildren.

Mr. Barlas was born Dec. 22, 1891, in Czechoslovakia, a son of Andrew and Mary Gofus Barlas. He retired 12 years ago from the Weirton Steel Co., where he worked as a laborer in the 54-Inch Strip Mill. He was a member of St. Jospeh Church and its Holy Name Society and the Toronto Jednota Lodge.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Anna Hromi Barlas, at home; five daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) DelFiandra, Mrs. Alf (Margaret) Zekas and Pete (Agnes) Ferrelli, all of Steubenville, Mrs. Joseph (Ann Catherine) Candal of Toronto, and Miss Eleanor Barlas at home; a son John P. Barlas of Toronto, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

EAST PALESTINE – Frank Golicic, 89, of N. Summer St., a retired self-employed coal miner, died Sunday at 9:50 a.m. at Salem Community Hospital, East, where he had been a patient since Friday.
He was born Oct. 4, 1881, in Yugoslavia, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Golicic. He came to East Palestine at the age of 18 and later moved to Arboal, Ark. He returned here in 1924. Before retiring in 1958, he had been with the Kenmar Manufacturing Co.
He was president and treasurer of the American Fraternal Union Lodge 41 here. His wife the former Frances Brodesko, whom he married in 1899, died in 1928.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn J. VanFossan, with whom he resided; three sons, Frank J. Golicic of Port Austin, Mich., Joseph J. Golicic and William J. Golicic, both of East Palestine, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home here, where friends may call Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Charles Doughty of the Lake Mount Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Ballantine was born Nov. 20, 1873, in Fredericktown, a daughter of Samuel G. and Josephine Laughlin Patterson, and was a member of the Second Presbyterian church and the G. A. R. auxiliary.
Surviving are two brothers, Thomas L. Patterson and John G. Patterson of East Liverpool.

Mrs. Robert Dixon’s Rites Slated Monday

LISBON – Mrs. Martha (Maddie) Dixon, 94, of Thomas Rd. died at 10 a.m. today at Salem City Hospital, where she had been a patient about two weeks. She had been in failing health for a number of years.
Born July 8, 1864, in Lisbon, a daughter of John and Mary Jane Hutcheson Ewing, she lived in this vicinity all her life. She was a member of the Lisbon Methodist Church. Her husband, Robert Dixon, died in 1944.
Mrs. Dixon is survived by three sons, Bert Dixon, Earl Dixon and Ralph Dixon, all of Lisbon, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. at the Eells-Leggett Funeral Home by the Rev. Tom Hammerton. Burial will be in the Lisbon Cemetery.

Mrs. Betty Jane Carroll Foutts, 26, wife of Alton O. Foutts, Review staff photographer, died Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. in the Cleveland Clinic, following an eight-day illness of cerebral hemorrhage.
Mrs. Foutts was stricken Dec. 31 while at work as a bookkeeper in the office of the Kerr Lumber Co. She was taken to the clinic Saturday.
A daughter of Francis Carroll and Hazel Martin Carroll, she was born June 11, 1925, in East Liverpool. She was graduated from the local high school in 1943 and was married on Sept. 23, 1949.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and lived on Allison St.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she leaves a sister, Doris Carroll of East Liverpool.
Rites will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. M. Rudolph Miller. Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Mrs. Wedgewood is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Brady (Minnie) Rollins, with whom she resided; a brother, John Etheridge of Willoughby, and a sister, Mrs. Stella Woodward of East Liverpool. Her husband, Frank Wedgewood, died in 1957.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. a the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. Clark Allison of the Wellsville First Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Nina Myrtle Griffin Smith, 82, died Sunday evening at the Fox Nursing Home in Chester after a long illness.
Before entering the nursing home, Mrs. Smith resided 15 years with her daughter, Mrs. Leo C. (Mary) Dodd of Weirton RD 1.
Mrs. Smith was born July 4, 1889 in Stewart County, Tenn., a daughter of Robert and Ida Lawrence Griffin. Her husband, Joseph Wesley Smith, died in 1945.
Besides her daughter, Mrs. Smith is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Eva Smith, Mrs. Ethel Green, and Mrs. Euna Green, all of Stewart County; two brothers, Welton Griffin of Detoit and James Griffin of Paducah, Ky., and two grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Baptist Church in Big Rock, Tenn. Burial will be in Smith Cemetery in Big Rock.
Local arrangements were by the Turley Funeral Home in New Cumberland.

TORONTO – Mrs. Sarah Williamson, 66, of RD2, wife of Kenneth Williamson, died Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville after a brief illness.
Mrs. Williamson was born in Toronto, July 8, 1905, a daughter of James Stone and Catherine Minesinger Stone. She was a member of the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church near Toronto, Eastern Star Chapter 215, and the Daughters of the American Revolution, both of Toronto.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Robert Williamson of Alliance; a sister, Mrs. George (Kathryn) Geer of California, and four grandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Clarke Funeral Home by the Rev. Roy Wlather. Burial will be in Sugar Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home tonight from 7 to 9 p.m., and Friday from 2to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Eastern Star Chapter will conduct services at the funeral home Friday at 8 p.m.

Services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Warrick Funeral Home in Columbiana for Everett (Pete) Crawford, 64 of Lisbon RD 3, who died Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. at St. John’s Medical Center in Steubenville after a lingering illness.
He had been ill since January and a hospital patient for 3 ½ weeks.
Mr. Crawford was born Oct. 6, 1906, in Rogers, a son of John H. and Nancy Wilson Crawford. He had resided his lifetime in Columbiana County and for 14 years at his last address.
He was an operating engineer for 35 years, being employed by the Hoosier Engineering Co. At one time he worked for the Collier’s Construction Co. in Strongsville, Ohio. He was a member of the VFW Post of Lisbon, Potters Camp, Owls Club of East Liverpool and Local 93, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He was married to the former Mary Sue Quinn July 23, 1954. She survives at home.
He is also survived by a sister, Mrs.Viola Smith of Beaver Falls, and a brother, Leeman (Pat) Crawford of New Waterford.
The Rev. James Crawford of Lousiville will officiate at Saturday’s service. Burial will be in East Carmel Cemetery near Rogers.

A Native of Hancock County, Mrs. Heffner was born Sept. 4, 1900, a daughter of Nathan Mercer and Idelea Wells Mercer. She spent all her life in Hancock County
She was a member of the Virginia Ave. Church of Christ in Chester and the Stepping Stones Organiatizon of the area Churches of Christ. Her husband died Dec. 11, 1969.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Julian (Helene) Wilson of Lenneyville; five sons, Robert R. Heffner and Ralph E. Heffner, both of East Liverpool, Frank E. Heffner at home, Ronald L. Heffner of Ft. Knox, Ky., and Lewis L. Heffner of Garden Grove, Calif.; threebrothers, Alvin Mercer of Richmond, Ind., Harlen Mercer of Barnesville, Ohio and Clarence Mercer of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Mercer Haught of Newell; 27 grandchildren and 15 greatgrandchildren.
Services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. a the Chester Chapel of the Arner Home for Funerals by Evangelist Frank Higginbotham. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.

A private committal service in Michigan is planned for Dr. Percy L. Lomas 70, of Fort Myers, Fla., who died Saturday afternoon following an automobile accident at Cape Coral.
Dr. Lomas once served Methodist churches here and in Lisbon before retiring in 1958.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Bernard T. Lomas, president of Albion College, Albion, Mich.; two grandsons, also of Albion; two sisters and two brothers in England. Mrs. Lomas died in July 1948.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 3 at Pine Island United Methodist Church in Fort Myers.

He was born Jan. 21, 1911, in Buchtel, Ohio, a son of the late James R. and Gertrude Wilson; two brothers, Frank and James Wilson; and four sisters, Hazel O'Neil, Mina Liston, Alice Bowers Kemper and Mary Keeney' and a great-grandson, Curtis Michael Van Horn. He was retired from Bethany College Maintenance Department. He was a World War II veteran of 73rd Fighters Squadron of the 7th Army Air Force, 318th Fighter Group. He was a member of the V. F. W. Post 4496 of Wellsburg. Sarge will be remembered for his storytelling. Surviving are his wife, Roseanna "Cleo" Schwertfeger Wilson, at home; a son, Lloyd T. CHESTER – GLENNA Lee Miller, 88, formerly of Carolina Ave., died Tuesday, De. 23, 2003, at Trinity West Medical Center in Steubenville.
Born July 3, 1915, in Chester, she was a daughter of the late William and Pearl Geer Markham.
Mrs. Miller worked at the former Dale K. Allison Insurance Agency for 26 years as a secretary and was a Member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. She graduated from Chester High School in 1933 and was active in her community belonging to the Chester Woman’s club, Chester Flower and Garden Club, Chester Planning Commission, was a Girl Scout leader and chaperoned Chester Hi-Teen for many years.
Preceding her is death was her husband, Merrill S. Miller, who died in 1974; and five sisters, Vera Hall, Ruby (Russ) Wines, Ima Wolfe, Velma (Richard) Shingler and Wanda Markham.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Peter (Jane) Tsinzo of Stoughton, Mass. And Mrs.Tom (Susan) Panebianco of Bloomingdale, Ohio, and nine grandchildren, Mary Jane McHenry, Ann U. (Tori) Tsinzo, Peter J. (Linda) Tsinzo, Christine (Mark) Lebassierre, Susan (Roger) Hardy, Stephanie Tsinzo, Kerry Tsinzo, Tim (Karen) Panebianco and Christopher (Christian Frisinger) Panebianco and 10 great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Katrina Lewis of the church will conduct services at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at the Arner Funeral Chapel followed by burial in Locust Hill Cemetery.

He was born Oct. 29, 1920, in Irondale, Ohio, the son of the late Solomon and Daisy Tice Myers.
He retired from Weirton Steel after working 32 years as a foreman with the labor gang in the coke plant. He also worked 16 years with Louis Berkman Industry.
He was a member of the Weirton Steel 25 year Club.
Besides his parents, He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriett Rudder Myers; a brother, Gene Myers, and two sisters, Wilma Simmon and Janeth Beaver.
He is survived by a son, John Myers and his wife Shirley of Cookers, W.Va.; a daughter, Mrs. Jess (Shirley) Reed of New Cumberland; four grandchildren, Steven Myers and his wife Renee, Scott L. Teed, Todd a. Reed and Angela M. Myers; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved pet “Brownie.”
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the New Cumberland Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home, with the reverends James Reed and Harry Jackson of the Brooke-Hancock Episcopal Ministries officiating. Interment will follow at New Cumberland Cemetery.
