Larry G. Smith, 78, of Chester, passed away following an extended illness.
Born on April 4, 1933, in Waverly, WV, Larry was the eldest son of the late Cecil and Minnie Pickens Smith.
Larry was a graduate of Newell High School, a Navy veteran, a member of the Newell American Legion and a former President of the Newell Lions Club.
He retired from the Quaker State Oil Refinery in March of 1996 as the Quality Control Assurance Supervisor. In addition Larry was involved in several local youth athletic activities, serving as a former coach for Newell Little League baseball, Chester Cub football, and Newell summer league softball teams.
In addition to his parents, two sons, Clarence and Gary Smithy preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Jody Smith, at home in Chester; his children Lee(Nancy) Smith of Cincinnati, Kit (Jim) Smith, Jody Simcox, and Matthew (Jacki) Simcox all of Newell, and Misty Smith (Trey MacKay) of Salt Lake City; eleven grandchildren, Tim Smith, Mandy McGeehan,
Dustin Kuiken, Rachel Timmons, Joel Timmons, Jackary Kuiken, Greag MacKay, Megan Simcox, Amanda MacKay, Ellie MacKay , and Tim MacKay; 3 great grandchildren, Kennedy McGeehan, Gianna Lamb, and Liam Timmons; a brother, Lee (Ryda) Smith of Vancouver, WA, and a sister, Lois (Hap) DeAngelis of New Jersey.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday April 11, 2011 at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell.
Burial followed at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, in Newell where the Tri-State Burial Group and the WV National Honor Guard conducted military services.
