Hubbard, Ohio – Dr. John D. O’Brien, Ph.D, 59, of Chestnut Ridge Road, died at 3:08 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Northside Hospital in Youngstown following a brief illness.
Dr. O’Brien was born in East Liverpool Aug. 2, 1941. His father, John E. O’Brien, died in 1977. His mother, Jane Hodgson McHenry, lives in Chester.
He had lived in Hubbard since 199, moving there from Youngstown. A professor of anthropology at several colleges, he also taught T’ai Chi in Hubbard and in Sharon, Pa.
He was Catholic by faith and a member of the Hibernian Society.
Graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1959, he then attended Ohio University and was graduated from University of the Americas in Mexico City. Later, he earned his master’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and furthered his education at Kent State University where he earned his Ph.D.
Besides his mother, survivors include a daughter, Kathleen A. O’Brien of Portland, Ore.; two half-brothers, Jeffrey O’Brien of Pennsylvania and Jay O’Brien of Kennebunk, Maine; and his dog Murphy at home.
A Memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home with Fr. Joseph Rudjak of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in North Canton, Ohio officiating.
