NOBLETON, Fla. – Agnes Mae “Hap” Rogers Jones, 93, of Nobleton, Fla., and a former resident of Shippingport, died Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009 in East Liverpool Hospital, East Liverpool, Ohio.
Born May 16, 1916 in Shippingport, she was a daughter of the late Walter Lee and Velma Ruth Knowles Rogers. Agnes was a 1934 graduate of Lincoln High School, Midland. She was the owner/operator of a grocery store, gas station, and restaurant in Shippingport. Being a gourmet cook, she loved cooking and baking each day for personnel employed during the construction of the world’s first commercial nuclear power plant in the 1950’s.
Agnes was also involved in the community and the church. As a longtime member of the Breen Valley Methodist Church and late, Nobleton Community Church in Fl., she served as youth choir director, a member of the adult choir, Sunday School teacher, officer in Ladies Aide Society and Willing Workers, librarian, and on occasion played the organ. In the community, she was actively involved in the Fire Department Auxiliary, Arts and Crafters Association and the Quilters Association. She was also an avid walker, gardener, seamstress, and a caregiver to many.
She, along with her husband, bought a home in Fla. in 1974 and enjoyed spending winters there. In 1988, they sold their Shippingport home and moved to their Florida home on a more permanent basis. Their love of family brought them back to Pennsylvania, where they spent each summer with their beloved daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Dwayne Adams.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Dwayne Adams of Greene Twp.; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Carole Jones, Beverly Hills, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. Janice Kiss, Weirton, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Patrick Adams and his wife, Beth of Green Twp., Bradley Adams and his wife, Danita of Southaven, Miss., Sonya Adams of New York City, Pam Jones Harris and her husband, Dave of Georgetown, Rob Jones and his wife, Teresa of Georgetown, Jeffery Jones and his wife, Kim of Georgetown, her great-grandchildren, Joshua Adams, Madison and Max Harris, Kara and Logan Jones, Casey and Alex Jones, and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Leslie Jones, on April 20, 1998, their 60th wedding anniversary.
Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. today in the Welch’s Funeral Home, Hookstown. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Green Valley Methodist Church in Shippingport with her beloved grandson, Rev. Brad Adams officiating. Interment will be at Mill Creek Hill Cemetery.
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff at Foxcrest, Chester, W. Va.; 4th floor personnel at East Liverpool Hospital; to her many loving nieces and nephews; and special friends Tanya Herron and Bettie Jones for their loving care and compassion for Agnes during her lengthy illness.
