EAST LIVERPOOL – Harry E. Hicks, 86, of South Surry Road, died suddenly at 7:25 p.m Monday, April 5, 2004, at East Liverpool City Hospital.
Born in East Liverpool, Dec. 8, 1917, son of the late Charles H. and bertha Posey Hicks, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church and its Crusaders Class and served on several committees.
A lifelong resident of the city, he served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army’s 7th Armored Division during World War II as a tank commander in Europe, including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded a Purple Heart.
An employee of the U.S. Postal Service in East Liverpool, he retired in 1975.
A life member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association and a member of its Old Guard, he also was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was a member of the Car Barn Heathens and served o the Columbiana County Soldiers & Sailors Relief Commission at one time.
His wife, Mary Elizabeth Hicks, whom he married May 29, 1941, died July 19, 2001. two brothers, Fred W. and Ralph Hicks, also preceded him in death.
Three sons, Rev. Gary Hicks and his wife Kay of Richmond, Ohio. Roger Hicks and his wife Cindy of Lakewood, Ohio, and Ray Hicks ans his wife Diana of Naples, Fla., survive.
Ten grandchildren, Sean Hicks, Erin Thomsic, Teresa Hicks, Joseph Hicks, Eric Hicks, Jenny Hicks, Monica Hurst, Sgt. Aaron Hurst, USMC, Tanya McGowan and Troy Hicks, survive.
There are four great-grandchildren, Zachary Hicks, Romana Hicks, Owen Thomsic and Maya McGowan.
A brother-in-law, William Masters of Canfield, and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Hicks of East Liverpool, also survive.
Friends may call Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
The Rev. Dave Maly of the church will conduct services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Group will provide military honors.
Immediately following burial, family and friends will gather in fellowship at the Dawson Family Center.

Sure Fair, 90, of RD 4, New Cumberland passed away Sunday, February 2, 2003 at the Weirton Medical Center following a brief illness.
She was born September 21, 1912 in Wynn, PA, a daughter of the late Andrew and Maria Timar Banko. She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Evelyn Fair Rea and Linda Sue Fair Littleton; a brother, William Banko and a sister, Mary Lebo.
She retired from the Weirton Steel Corporation’s Tin Mill sorting room. She was a protestant by faith.
Surviving are two sons, Bernard Fair and his wife, Alma of Weirton an Charles Fair and his wife, Glenda of New Cumberland; a daughter, Judith Auerbach and her husband, Harold of Cleveland; three sisters, Irene Vincent of Uniontown, Margaret Cindrick of Waynesboro, Va and Emma Paskan of Sutersville, PA; two brothers, Franklin Banko of Meherrin, VA and Joseph Banko of Nevada City, NV; 14 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Friends will be received Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the turley Funeral Home in New Cumberland. Services will be held there on Friday, February 7, 2003 with Rev. Curtis Watkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Fairview Cemetery, Burgettstown.

He was born Nov. 13, 1938, in Wellsville, the son of the late John and Sarah Hargreaves Halfhill.
He served as a sergeant with the Military Police in the U.S. Army. He was a security supervisor at Shippingport Nuclear Power Plant for more than 18 years before retiring in 1984. Dave was an avid hunter and fisherman, spending much of his free time in the woods enjoying nature.
Survivors in clued his devoted wife, Sally S Boyd Halfhill, whom he married Dec. 12, 1963; five daughters, Giner Dawn Pease and her husband Mick of Roseville, Ohio, Shirley Messick and her husband Tola of East Dublin, Ga., Susan Marie Pearce of Dudley, Ga., Marsae Lu-Shawn Barber and her husband Tom of Wellsville and Michelle D. Pease and her husband Wayne of Wellsville; three sons, David F. “D.H.” Halfhill jr. of Wellsville, Butch Brown of East Liverpool and David F. HalfhillIII and his wife Kelly of Wellsville; a sister, Roberta “Dolly” George and her husband Buss of Canyon city, Calif.; two brothers, Robert G. Halfhill and his wife Sharon of Wellsville and Bruce Halfhill and his wife Rachel of Conroe, Texas.
He was a longing grandfather and great-grandfather to 26 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, his devoted pet Teddy Marshall, as well as many loving friends will greatly miss Dave.
Mr. Halfhill was predeceased by a son James Robert “Jimmy” Halfhill in 1991, and a brother, John “Jack” Halfhill.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Roberts Funeral Home in Wellsville with Pastor Dirk hall of the Wellsville Church of the Nazarene officiating.. Burial will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery.

He was also a member of the Irondale United Methodist Church and attended The River Christian Fellowship Church in Empire. Bill was a member of the Toronto Pigeon Club, where he enjoyed raising and racing homing pigeons.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Carman Hughes in 1998 and his brother, James Patrick Hughes.
Surviving are his daughter, Deborah Wardeska of Irondale; three granddaughters, Mary Beth (Michael Smith of Austin Lake, Toronto, Amy (Rick) Wade of Columbus and JoAnn Wardeska of Irondale; one sister, Shirley (Donald) McFall of Toronto; and two great grandchildren, Sadie Wright and Lili Smith.

He was the beloved husband of Martha for 56 years; dear father of Francis Olesky of Georgia, Ronald (Diane) Olesky of Oxford, Patricia (James) Ruwart of Lake Orion, Robert (Victoria) Olesky of Florida and Christine (Guy) Rendon of Lake Orion; loving grandfather of Brian and Andrea Olesky, Renee, Lisa and Jimmie Rewart, Jessica and Nicholas Rendon and Madeline Olesky; and dear brother of Bernice Chetok and Rose Green both of Ohio.
Mt. Olesky was preceded in death by his brothers, Pete, Joseph and John Olesky and sisters, Mary Kraft and Sophie Fistel.
Mr. Olesky retired as a foreman from G.M. Fisher Body. He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church since 1953. Mr. Olesky served with the 340th Engineers in World War II through the New Guinea and Southern Philippine campaigns. He was a member of American Legion Post 663 in Pittsburgh.

Born in East St. Louis, Ill., Dec. 29, 1919, daughter of the late Owen Moore and Cassandres Bates Moore Davis, she was a member of the Sheridan A.M.E. Church, where she served as the financial secretary and a member of the trustee board. Active with the Women’s Auxiliary and Missionary groups at the church, she also participated in preparations for the World Day of Prayer.
She served with the U. S. Army during World War II and had lived for many years in East Liverpool.
Employed in the laboratory at East Liverpool City Hospital as a medical technician, she also worked as a caseworker for the social services in Lisbon.
Her husband, William Ersell Jefferson, whom she married Oct. 25, 1958, died in 1984. her Aunt, Vera Washington, who raised her, also preceded her in death.
A stepson, Orin Jefferson of Potomac Falls, Va., survives.
A brother-in-law, James Jefferson and his wife Geraldine of Freedom, Pa., and two sisters-in-law, Loretta C. Jefferson of Beaver Falls and Sarah Jefferson of Chicago, also survive along with many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Her neighbor and devoted friend, Shirley parsons and her family, also survive her.
Friends may call Saturday at the Dawson Funeral Home two hours before the 3 pm. service, which will be conducted by the Pastor Larsie Frazier of the church.
Burial will be in Sunset Gardens in Millstadt, Ill.

He was a self-employed strip miner until retiring and attended First United Methodist Church of Lisbon
He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Velina Morgan Vulcan a daughter, Lana Mae Vulcan; and an infant son.
He is survived by a son, Gary Randall Vulcan of Lisbon; two daughters, Judith Jane Evans of Ravenna and Cyndee Sommers of Washington, D.C.’ seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pastor James Gaston will conduct services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Weber Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lisbon Cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Velina Morgan Vulcan a daughter, Lana Mae Vulcan; and an infant son.
He is survived by a son, Gary Randall Vulcan of Lisbon; two daughters, Judith Jane Evans of Ravenna and Cyndee Sommers of Washington, D.C.’ seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Pastor James Gaston will conduct services at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Weber Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lisbon Cemetery.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Loretta I. Cattrell, age 86, of Albuquerque and formerly of Toronto, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 at Manor Care Center.
Born Jan. 15, 1918, in Hammondsville, Ohio, she is the daughter of the late George Rehman and Evelyn Hogue Rehman Jones.
Loretta was a former member of the New Somerset Christian Church, and was a member of the North River Avenue Church of Christ in Toronto. She was a member fo the Toronto Order of Eastern Star 215 and the Toronto Senior Citizens. She was a 1936 graduate of Wellsville High School and was a retired bank teller form the former UniBank in Toronto.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Francis A. Tompkins, whom she married Feb. 10, 1942, and who passed away in 1970, and her second husband, Ford Cattrell whom she married Feb. 22, 1974, and who passed away in 1993
Loretta’s survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Linda Bundy and her husband, Hugh of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; a grandson, Glenn Bundy of Columbus, Ohio; a granddaughter, Mrs. Julie E. Meadows and her husband, Darren of Los Alamos, N.M.; and one great-grandson, Hayden Meadows of Los Alamos.
Family and friends will be received for visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2004, at the Clarke Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2004, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Robert E. Hanze officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill cemetery in Wellsville.

He was born January 10, 1932 in Weirton, a son of the late Oliver J. and Lexie L. Ankrom Beagle. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Carl, Darrell and Oliver Beagle Jr. and a sister, Loretta Maxine Myers.
He was retired for Weirton Steel Corp. where he worked as a motor inspector. He was the proprietor of C. B.’s Bicycle Sop in Weirton. He was an United States Army Korean Conflict veteran and was Protestant by faith.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Nellie Dolores Beagle of Weirton; two sons, Clayton Andrew Beagle Jr., of Weirton and Clifford Alan Beagle of Poparlare, Germany; two daughters Danita Dianne Beagle and Debra Marie Stevens, both of Weirton; a sister, Violet Warne of Dillonvale, Oh; two brothers, Cecil Beagle and Carlos Beagle, both of New Cumberland; ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 7, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Turley Funeal Hoe with Pastor Charles Thomas officiating. Military graveside services followed at th New Cumberland Cemetery.

CONCORD, N.H. – Robert Ernest Rueggeberg, Professor Emeritus of Manufacturing Engineering at Miami University, died Sunday, Jan. 1,2006, at the Concord Regional Visiting Nurse Association’s Hospice House.
Professor Rueggeberg was born Dec. 19, 1919, in Steubenville, Ohio. He graduated from Steubenville (Ohio) high School in 1937. Known to his friends and colleagues as Bob, he earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami University in 1941 with a major in mathematics and minors in physics and chemistry. During his college days, Bob was a member of the Miami Fencing Club. He competed with the saber and the foil. Even as an undergraduate at Miami, Bob was planning for a career in education. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education’ Phi Delta Kappa, a professional association for educators; and Kappa Phi Kappa.
Following graduation from Miami in 1941,Bob was employed by the Westinghouse Corp, in Pittsburgh. World War II intervened, and Bob was drafted in March 1942. Knowing that it wouldn’t be long before he would go overseas, Bob married his longtime Miami girlfriend, June E. Hill, in Richmond, Va., in August 1942.
Bob served as staff sergeant with the Company A 926th Signal Battalion in U. S. Army through October 1945. bob landed in Normandy during he D Day invasion. He fought his way through Northern France and Central Europe in the Ardennes and Rhineland battles and campaigns. He was wit the American troops who liberated the Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Bob received the Good Conduct Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Service medal with five Bronze Stars.
Bob returned to Miami in 1946 and earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. Bob joined the Miami faculty in 1948 as a member of the Industrial Education Department. In 1983, he became a member of the Manufacturing Engineering Department, retiring in 1985. His professional life revolved around being an educator and teaching his students to excel at being teachers themselves. Bob was convinced that his students kept him young. His enthusiasm made him a popular professor, and outside class his students called him “Rueggie.” Bob continued to help Miami students after his retirement. His alumni Contributions always went to the Women’s Athletic Department, because Bob never felt they received their fair share in the budget..
At Miami, Bob was quite proud of the four laboratory areas he designed for his students. Bob also found time to start the Industrial Education Department at Wilmington College. Bob belonged to many educational and professional associations. He served as the Ohio President of Epsilon Pi Tau, the honorary fraternity for outstanding practitioners in the teaching profession.
Ob leaves behind a long Miami tradition. His mother , Marie (Floto) Rueggeberg; his sister, Phyllis Rueggeberg Miller; two sisters-in-law; his wife, June (Hill) Rueggeberg and her father; his son, Christopher Rueggeberg; and numerous cousins, all graduated from Miami.
Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, June; his son Christopher; his daughter –in-law, Gail; and his granddaughter, Emily Elizabeth.
Memorial services were held on Jan. 7, at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Concord, where he was a member.

She was born on July 17, 1915, in Elizabeth, W.Va., a daughter of the late William W. and Mattie (Lockhart) Owens. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers. Cecil, Lawrence “Dutch” and Raymond Owens.
Lorena lived most of her life in Brilliant, Ohio. After the death of her parents, Lorena Closed the family grocery store and then worked as a clerk at the former Powell’ store and was retired form the former Schmacher’s Market in Brilliant.
She is survived by six nephews and their families, Larry W. Owens, Cecil Owens, Jr., John Owens, Jeff Owens, Gene Owens and Bill Owens.
Lorena was faithful to her church, the Brilliant Christian Church and will be sadly missed by the church family and longtime friends.

She was born on Dec. 23, 1917, in Weirton, W.Va., a daughter of the late John P. “Cap” Wylie and Mary Elizabeth (Needham) Wylie. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Frank A. and John W. Wylie; four sisters, Esther Crago, Helen B. Wylie, Catharine A. Stone and her twin Lola A. Linscott.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Jim Hagenbuch; three stepdaughters, Mary Jo Findley of Myrtle /Beach, C. C., Thresa McIntosh of Columbia, Mo., Dr. Sandra Halterman of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Carmella Carvilli of East Liverpool; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Rita Waaldron of Springfield, Ohio, and brother-in-law, Joe Hagenbuch of Houston, Texas, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of the Army, serving with Company M, 330th Infantry, 83rd Division. During World War II he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, the Argonne Forest and the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. He received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star and was decorated by the French Government with the Jubilee of Liberty medal. He was retired from National Steel Co. after 43 years of service, last working as a foreman of the Track Gang. He was a member of the New Cumberland V.F.W., the Chester American Legion, Weirton Moose, Weirton Steel Management club and the Weirton Steel Twenty-Five Year Club. He was also a member o the New Cumberland Christian Church.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley Sobel and two infant brothers, Tommy and Edward; two sisters, Virginia Bennett and an infant sister, Laura.

Died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003
Charles W. Simms, 75, of New Cumberland, passed away Monday, September 15, 2003 at his residence.
He was born April 16, 1928 in Alexandria, VA, a son of the late Nellie Simms.
He was an United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired as city auditor for the City of Alexandria where he was head of the finance department. He was a race horse trainer and owner at Mountaineer Race Track for years.
He is survived by many friends.
Interment was made in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

Exelee Pittman, 77, of RD 2, New Cumberland passed Friday, September 19, 2003 at the Weirton Medical Center.
She was born December 17, 1925, a daughter of the late John M. and Maggie Bell Neff Leek. She was also preceded in death my her husband, Earl Eugene Pittman; a son, Terry Pittman; a brother, Pete Leek; a sister, Lucille Eastham and a granddaughter, Exelee “Lela” Pittman.
She was a Protestant by faith and was a homemaker.
She is survived by four sons, Robert Pittman of Middlebourne, WV, Norman Pittman and Lloyd Pittman both of New Cumberland and Charles Pittman of Follansbee; three daughters, Evelyn Bailey of Canton, OH, Patricia O’Hanlon of New Cumberland and Wilsie Galiano of Follansbee; two brothers, Loman Leek and Lloyd Leek, both of Middlebourne; 21 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Private burial was made in the Northview Cemetery in New Martinsville. Arrangements handled by the Turley Funeral Home.

INDUSTRY, Pa. – Pauline L. Fantone, 85, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at her residence.
Born Sept. 1, 198, in East Liverpool, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Alena Pinkerton Stephens.
She was a member of the Midland ecumenical Parish.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Fantone.
She is survived by her son, John Fantone, with whom she made her home; for grandsons; brother, Herman Stephens of California; sisters, Edna Swift of California and Donna Smith of Ohio
The Rev. Rico J. Vespa will officiate services at 11 a.m. Saturday at D.L Williams Funeral Home in Midland. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.
