William O. Baker, 89, of Beaver, peacefully passed away Friday evening, May 7, 2010, at Heritage Valley Beaver, with his family at his side.
Born April 21, 1921, in North Sewickley Township, he was a son of the late Michael and Annette Obney Baker and had been a resident of Beaver all of his life. Bill was proud to be a descendant of the Blockhouse-Baker families, who were considered the original descendants of Beaver County. He retired as vice president and as a professional engineer with Michael Baker Jr., Inc. during which time he headed the photogrammetry department. He was a licensed surveyor and actually began surveying as a young boy along side his father, Michael Baker, who was Beaver County’s first surveyor. He was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, Beaver, where he had served as a Deacon, and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force having served during World War II. It was during World War KK that he had served as a Captain with the 316th Troop Carrier Group and was a pilot of the C47. He flew in the Mideast and European Campaigns and most notably had made several missions on D-Day, having taken direct orders from General Eisenhower. A 1938 graduate of Beaver Area high School, he attended Geneva College and later graduated with Honors from Penn State University where he had served as president of the Penn State Engineering Society. A former president, the PA Society of Professional Engineers, Beaver County Chapter, later named him engineer of the year. Bill was an active member of his community in many ways including having served as past president of Merrick Art Gallery and also as the Gallery’s project engineer during their renovation. He was also an active member of the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation.
He will be sadly missed by his family including his wife of 67 years, Lois Nelson Baker, whom he married November 20, 1942 at the historic post chapel at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, two sons, Riley Baker, Beaver, Kent (Cindy) Baker Boalsburg, PA; three daughters, Jan Baker, Beaver; Emily (Barry) Blose, Washington, PA; Martha (Dennis Brellock) Baker, Bridgewater; two sisters, Mary Yarnelle, Santa Fe, NM, and Edith Metheny, Chippewa Township; two grandsons, Wesley and Ross Baker, Boalsburg, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were five brothers, John, James, Daniel, George, Michael Jr., and four sisters, Juliet, Josephine, Doris and Martha.
Friends will be received today from 4 to 8 in the NOLL FUNERAL HOME INC., 333 Third St. Beaver. A funeral service will be conducted Monday at 12 noon at the First Presbyterian Church, Beaver by his pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeffrey A. Arnold.
Private interment will take place at the Beaver Cemetery.

Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Heddon, 62 of 676 Lincoln Ave., was dead on arrival at City Hospital Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. She had been ill for some time.
Mrs. Heddon was born in Carrollton, Oct. 4, 1911, a daughter of William Hunt and Elizabeth Clark Hunt, and had resided in this area her lifetime.
She attended the Gospel Tabernacle here.
Mrs. Heddon is survived by her husband Joseph R. Heddon; two daughters, Mrs. Ross (Gertrude Mae) Brown and Mrs. William (Thelma) Wright both of East Liverpool; a sister, Mrs. John (Inez) Starick of East Liverpool, seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the Martin Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles Brunner of the Avondale Baptist Church.

Charles (Beany) Oliver, 55 of Hammondsville died at Osteopathic Hospital Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. He had been a patient about a week.
Mr. Oliver was born in Wellsville Nov. 28, 1918, a son of Annie McCartney Oliver of Hammondsville and Fred Oliver.
He was a retired employe of the F. J. Dando Brick Co. of Hammondsville and a member of American Legion Post 712 of Hammondsville.
He served five years with the Army during World War II as a member of the 37th Division, 145th Infantry, Co ? including 3 ½ years in the Pacific Theater of operations.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Oliver is survived by his widow, Mrs. Alberta Tice Oliver, at home; a daughter, Lori Tice, at home; three sons, Charles Leffler, Timothy Lee Tice, and Scott C. Tice, all at home; a sister, Mrs. Rena Ketchum of Hammondsville; a brother, Tomas Oliver of Hammondsville, and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at the Haugh-Roberts Funeral Home in Wellsville Friday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Carl Stockdale. Burial will be in Hammondsville Cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Ann Burnside, 94, died at the Fox Nursing Home in Chester today at 12:20 a.m. where she had resided for two years, coming frim Morgantown, W. Va.
She was born in England on Feb. 2, 1879, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Brown.
Survivors include a son, Billy Mershel Burnside of Chester.
Services will be held Saturday from the Jenkins Funeral Home in Morgantown. Burial will be at Weeks Cemetery, Bridgeport, Ohio.
The Arner Funeral Chapel of Chester is handling local arrangements.

WARREN – Services for William Jones Jr. 66, of 975 Garden St.. will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Robert h. Roberts Memorial Home here.
He died Monday at 10:05 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Riverside Hospital following an extended illness.
Mr. Jones was born Aug. 27, 1907, in Monessen, Pa., a son of William F. Jones and Roseann Webb Jones , and moved to Warren from Monessen four years ago. He was employed as a craneman at Wean Industries for 15 years retiring in 1969.
Mr Jones was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Eagles Lodge 311, VFW Post 1090, Elks Lodge 295, Moose Lodge 186, and DAV Chapter 11, all of Warren and American Legion Post 121 of Chester, W. Va.
Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Maxine Simms Jones, whom he married Aug. 30, 1946; a daughter, Mrs. Donald F. Fisher of Cortland; a son, W. David Jones of Warren; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Roberts of Warren and Mrs. Otto Mackey of Champion Township; a brother Lee Roberts of Leavittsburg, and five grandchildren.
Services will be hed a the funeral home, 180 Garfield Dr. Burial will be in Crown Hill Burial Park Mausoleum.
Elks Lodge 295 will hold services at the funeral home tonight at 6:45, VFW Post 1090 will conduct military rites a the cemetery following services at the funeral home.

Services for Willard H. Forrester, 56, of Liberty Ave., Chester, will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester.
Mr. Forrester died Wednesday morning at home after a lingering illness.
He was born in Wick, W. Va.,, in September 1917, a son of Tiant and Emma Forrester. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include a son, Ronnie J. Forrester of Chester; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Wanda Ilene) Butts of Huntington Beach, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Rose Lamp of Pennsboro, W. Va., and two brothers, Clyde Forrester and Oliver Forrester of Wick.
The Rev. T. Larry Davis of the Glendale Church of the Nazarene will conduct the Monday services. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery near Wick.

Mr. Guinn, who resided with a daughter, Mrs. Leslie (Merl) Starr, died Friday at 9:30 a.m. at City Hospital, where he had been a patient since Dec. 21.
He was born Nov. 19, 1883, in Wadesville, V. Va., a son of Thomas and Fannie Davis Guinn. He had resided in this area for 73 years and was a former teamster. He worked as a miller at the former Faulk Brothers Co. for 45 years before retiring in 1965.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church, where he was an honorary deacon and a member of the Baraca LurSaw Class. He also belonged to the Modern Woodsmen of America. His wife, Mrs. Clara Marty Guinn, died April 10, 1944.
In addition to Mrs. Starr, Mr. Guinn leaves another daughter, Mrs. Mildred Boso of East Liverpool, and two grandchildren.
The Rev. William Parsons will conduct the Monday services. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery.

She died Thursday after a brief illness.
Mrs. Fennewald was the daughter of Daniel H. and Lillian Guilker Swaney. She also taught in the Lakewood Schools.

Surviving are his father, Larry Smith, and his step-mother, Mrs. Joan Smith, at home; two brothers, Lee A. Smith, at home, and Clarence R. Smith of Hamden, Conn.; a stepbrother, Matthew Simcox, and two stepsisters, Jody Simcox and Mokita Simcox, at home, and the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Smith of Newell.

SALINEVILLE – Mrs. Anna R. Willis, 80, of RD 2, wife of Victor Willis, was pronounced dead on arrival at Timken Memorial Hospital in Canton Friday at 9 p.m. She had suffered a heart attack.
Mrs. Willis was born Sept. 17, 1893, in Salineville RD 1, a daughter of John C. Dorrance and Lydia Coburn Dorrance. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, its No. 2 Circle and Philathea Sunday School Class. Betsy Ross Chapter of Eastern Star and the Farm Bureau Council.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Edward (Ruth) Smith of Amherst, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Leslie (Sarah) Taylor of Beloit; a stepson, J. Samuel Willis of Garden City, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. Howard (Lena) Johnston of Mechanicstown, Mrs. William (Edna) Johnson of Salineville, and Mrs. Orville (Helen) Hanley of Canton, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

A lifelong resident, Mrs. Garrison was born here April 22, 1907, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Householder. She attended the United Presbyterian Church.
Her husband, Boyd F. Garrison, died Dec. 20, 1953.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Clovis E. (Frances) Glove of New Cumberland RD 3 and Mrs. Carol O”Shell of Pittsburgh; a son, Robert Boyd Garrison of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a sister, Mrs. Arthur (Wilma) McClue of Dunbar, W. Va.; a brother, Dean Householder of New Cumberland, and 11 grandchildren.
The rites will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. from the Turley Funeral Home here by the Rev. Richard Huggins of the United Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in New Cumberland Cemetery.
There will be no calling hours.
The family’s favorite charity was the American Cancer Society.

Mr. O’Malley was born Sept. 22, 1904 in Steubenville. He was retired from the Wheeling Steel Co. Steubenville plant.
A memorial Service is being planned. There will be no calling hours.

NEW CUMBERLAND – Services will be held this afternoon for Charles H. Hall, 66, of RD 3, who died Saturday morning at Akron General Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Hall was born Jan. 6, 1912, in New Martinsville, a son of Henry and Stella Hall.
He was retired from the steel works machine shop of the Weirton Steel Division of the National Steel Corp.
Besides his widow, Mrs. Margaret Pethtel Hall, survivors include a son, Charles Hall of Follansbee; five daughters, Mrs. Sonja Varner of Charleston, W. Va., Mrs. Linda Tate of New Cumberland RD 1, Mrs. Gretchen Branum of Steubenville, Miss Crystle Hall, Miss Cindy Hall and Miss Vala Hall, all of New Cumberland RD 3, three sisters, Mrs. Vashtey Staley of Middlebourne, W. Va., Mrs. Hazel Flueharty of New Martinsville and Opal of New York, and 5 grandchildren.
The rites were scheduled today at 2 p.m. from the Turley Funeral Home here by the Rev. Allen S. Fields. Burial will be in New Cumberland Cemetery.

SALEM – heather Dotson, 2-month old daughter of Richard N. and Naomi Gilbert Dotson of 1357 Elberon Dr., was pronounced dead on arrival at 9:15 a.m. Sunday at Salem Community Hospital East.
Columbiana County Corner Dr. William Kolozzie ruled a crib death.
Other survivors are a sister, Angela, and a brother, James. Both at home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Norman Dotson of East Liverpool, maternal grandparents, Mr and Mrs. Charles Gilbert of East Liverpool, and a maternal great grandmother, Mrs. Mabel Gilbert of East Liverpool.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church chapel with the Rev. Thomas Blank officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
No calling hours are scheduled. Arrangements are being handled by the Arbaugh-Pearce-Greenisen Funeral Home
