NEW CUMBERLAND – Charles William Mechling, 83, of Second Avenue, died Tuesday Nov. 21, 1995, at the West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh following a brief illness.
He was born in Colliers, W.Va., July 10, 1912, a son of the late Thomas L. and Suella Strain Mechling.
He was employed as an electrical foreman in the tin mill department at the Weirton Steel Co. He was a member of the New Cumberland Christian Church, the Masonic Lodge 22 Free and Accepted Masons, and the Senior Citizens Singing Group.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie M. Cooper Mechling, at home; a daughter , JoAnn Owings of Independence, Pa., a brother, Roy Mechling of New Manchester, four sisters, Florence Bridges and Willigene Minnis of North Carolina, Margaret Hayes of Weirton and Georgia Freshwater of Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, two step grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
The Rev. Sherrill Fritts will conduct services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Turley Funeral Home. Burial will be in New Cumberland Cemetery.

CHESTR – Betty Jane Culler, 86, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2005, at the East Liverpool City Hospital.
Born March 10, 1918, in East Liverpool, she was te daughter of the late William George and Edythe Marshall (Woolmaker) Phillips.
Her husband, Lloyd James Culler, to whom she ws married Feb. 3, 1939, preceded her in death on Dec. 10, 1997. She was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Betty was a homemaker and a charter member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
Betty’s survivors include her son, Kurt A. Culler and his wife, Ann of Chester, daughters, Judith K. McGlothlin and her husband Bruce of South Park, Pa., and Patricia E. Culler Jones of York Harbor, Maine; and grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Culler, Kurt Martin Culler, Kenneth Lloyd Jones, Michael Peyton McGlothlin and Molly Jane McGlothlin.
The family will receive friends 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Greco-Hertinick Funeral Home, 3219 Main St., Weirton, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Geoffrey Coupland presiding. .Interment will be at Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.

Mrs. Lula Mae Cooper, 74, of 924 3rd Ave., New Cumberland, died Sunday at 10:30 p.m. at the Clifford Curry residence on R. D. !.
She was born July 25, 1892, in McKim Run, Pleasants County, W.Va., a daughter of the late James McClelland and Sophia Ryan McClelland. Her husband, the late Mahlon Cooper, and Mrs. Cooper came to New Cumberland in 1908. Mr. Cooper died in 1950.
Mrs. Cooper was a member of the New Cumberland Christian Church, the Senior Women’s Club, the North American Benefit Association and was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Operative Potters.
Surviving are a son, Ernest Cooper of New Cumberland; two daughters, Mrs. Sophia Schmidbauer of East Liverpool

NEW CUMBERLAND – Ernest Lawrence Cooper, Sr, 80, of New Cumberland, died Wednesday at the Weirton Medical Center.
He was born April 20, 1918, in New Cumberland, the son of the late Malon and Lula May McClelland Cooper.
Mr. Cooper was employed as a crane repairman at the Weirton Steel Co., for 35 years before retiring.
He was a member of the Weirton Steel 25-Year Club and was Protestant by faith. He served in the U. S. Army with the Motor Pool.

Mrs. Sophie Schmidbauer, 76, of Shadyside Ave. died at 5:50 this morning at East Liverpool City Hospital following a one-month illness.
She was born in West Virginia May 3, 1909, a daughter of the late Mahlon Cooper and Lula Mae McClelland Cooper.
She lived most of her life here moving from New Cumberland. She was graduated from East Liverpool School of nursing and retired as a registered nurse from City Hospital. She was a member of Campground Community Church, the East Liverpool Area Senion Citizens, the Goldenaires and the Ohio Nursing Association. A local Radio station named Mrs. Schmidbauer “Mother of the Year” in 1965.
Her husband, Lawrence J. Schmidbauer, died Oct. 12, 1951.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Harold (Marian) Haney of Ravenna, Ohio, Mrs. James (Nancy) Davidson and Mrs. David (Martha)) McELhaney of East Liverpool; four sons, Richard L. Schmidbauer of East Liverpool, Joseph L. Schmidbauer and John M. Schmidbauer of Glenmoor and Thomas C. A Shadyside Ave. millworker was injured fatally Friday afternoon at 4 when struck by a falling tree while watching men clear a neighbor’s tract of land with a high-lift.
He was Lawrence Joseph Schmidbauer, 42, who suffered a fractured skull and probably a broken neck, according to Columbiana County Coroner Ernest Sturgis. He was dead on arrival at City Hospital.
The falling tree glanced against another then struck him.
Schmidbauer was born here March 7, 1908, and was employed by the Crucible Steel co. He was a memberof St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Carroll Counci 509, Knights of Columbus, and the Liverpool Township Grange.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Sophie Cooper Schmidbauer; three daughters, Marion Schmidbauer, Nancy Schmidbauer and Martha Schmidbauer, and four sons, Richard Schmidbauer, Josep Schmidbauer, John Schmidbauer and Thomas Schmidbauer, all at home; two brothers, Otto Schmidbauer of Chester, and William Schmidbauer of East Liverpool, and three sisters, Mrs. Grace Massey of Gary, Ind., and Mrs. Veronica Clark and Mrs. Margaret Curran of East Liverpool.

George R. McHenry, 46, of North Michigan Boulevard, Salem, was pronounced dead about 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 27, 1989, in the emergency room at Princeton Community Hospital, Mercer County, W.Va., of injuries suffered in a truck accident
He was born in East Liverpool April 4, 1943, a son of Mrs. Mae Miller McHenry of East Liverpool and the late Russell McHenry.
Mr. McHenry was employed by Herron Transfer of Salem. He graduated from Beaver Local High School, and was a member of Amvets Post 45 at Salem and the Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was born in East Liverpool April 4, 1943, a son of Mrs. Mae Miller McHenry of East Liverpool and the late Russell McHenry.
Mr. McHenry was employed by Herron Transfer of Salem. He graduated from Beaver Local High School, and was a member of Amvets Post 45 at Salem and the Salem Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Campbell was born March 25, 1882, in Hancock County. He was retired from Weirton Steel Co. as a construction foreman. Previously he had worked in the oil fields in South America and Texas.
He was a past master of Masonic Lodge 22 in New Cumberland where he was a member for over 50 years, and a past high priest of Royal Arch Masons, Chapter 14, of New Cumberland. He also was a member of the Maskat Shrine of Wichita Falls, Tex., and the Worshipful Shrine of Lagrado in Steubenville. His wife, Ethel Steen Campbell, died in 1961.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William (Margaret Jeanne) Sanker of Cincinnati; a son, William S. Campbell of New York City, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home at New Cumberland by Rev. Allen S. Fields, with a Masonic graveside service at the New Cumberland Cemetery.

LAKE WALES, Fla. – Glenn Shasteen, 69, of Lake Wales, formerly of Salem, died Friday at Lake Wales Hospital following a long illness.
Mr. Shasteen has resided in the Lake Wales area fro six years, coming form Lantana, Fla. He was a tool and dye maker at Tru Cut Dye Corp. and a veteran of the U. S. Army. He was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Eleanor E.; two daughters, Glenda L. Gano of Franklin, Tenn. And Kay L. Ward of Lake Wales; two sons, John A. of St. Petersburg, and Gary G. of Plant City; three brothers; and 10 grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel at the Marion Nelson Funeral Home in Lake Wales with the Rev. Dennis Turner officiating.

A lifelong area resident, he had been employed as an electrician at Crucible Steel for 37 years before retiring in 1973.
His wife, Jeanette K. Havens Shasteen, whom he married Jan. 1, 1933, died Nov. 22. 1992. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, a sister and a grandson.
He is survived by four daughters, Shirley Brenneman of Rogers, Dolores Shasteen of East Liverpool, Tawnya R. Shasteen of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Wendie “Casey” Shasteen at home; a son, Farnum C. Shasteen of Negley; a brother, Harris Shasteen of East Liverpool, four sisters, Violet Mitchell and Mary Barrett of East Liverpool, Doris Crawford of Darlington, Pa., and Theodora Custer of Salineville; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was born Feb. 17, 1931, in New Cumberland, the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Tarr) Tice.
He served his country during the Korean Conflict with the United States Marines. A retired steel worker from National and Weirton Steel’s Tin Mill Department. A member of the Weirton Steel 25 Year Club. He loved the game of Football. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church of New Cumberland.
Before his illness he was the door greeter for the Nixon Funeral Home.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a baby girl, a son, Larry Tice; a sister, Gladys Graham; also a brother, Edmond Tice.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years Marjorie (Wycoff) Tice, at home and also by his children, Sharon Hill and husband, Doug, of Chester, Mary Tice of New Cumberland, Nancy Nixon and husband, Mitch, of Newell, Ronald Tice and wife, Mary Ann, of New Cumberland, and also Leonard Paul Tice of New Cumberland. He was very proud of his three grandchildren, Angel Hill, of Chester, Amber Nixon, of Newell and Christopher Tice, of New Cumberland; a brother, William “Bill” Tice and wife, Carmen, of Weirton; a sister, Margie Graham, of New Cumberland; a special aunt, Evelyn Myler, of East Liverpool; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Born in Lennyville, W.Va., Dec. 23, 1920, son of the late Joseph and Sylvia Starlin Mercer, he was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene of East Liverpool and its Peffer Memorial Sunday School Class.
Nearly a lifelong resident of the area, he retired from Globe Brick, where he operated mining machinery.
An avid bowler, he also was an amateur photographer.
His wife, Sara Brooks Mercer, died May 5, 1986. A daughter, Dalene R. Rayle, died March 2, 2001.
A daughter, Mrs. Dan (Rebecca “Becky”) Allen of East Liverpool survives, along with a granddaughter, Heather Ann Allen, and a great-granddaughter, Brianna Nicole Allen, both of East Liverpool.
Friends may call Thursday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

She was born Feb. 4, 1903, in Delaware Township, Mercer County, Pa., a daughter of the late Samuel G. Schaible and Annabelle Thompson Schaible.
Mrs. McHenry resided in East Palestine from 1940 to October 1985. Many years ago, she had been employed as manager-bookkeeper of the Fred Wasser General Store at Fredonia, Pa., and she later taught at the elementary school in New Hamburg, Pa. She was graduated from Edinburg (Pa.) State Teachers College in 1923, and was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in East Palestine.
Her husband, Jesse T. McHenry, whom she married Sept. 29, 1926, died Feb. 2, 1985.
She is survived by three sons, Mervin E. McHenry of Springfield, Ohio, Leslie E. McHenry of Richmond, Va., and Victor L. McHenry of Hot Springs, Ark.; two daughters, Miss Mildred E. McHenry of Salem, with whom she resided, and Mrs. Aleta Scanlon of Salem; a brother, John I. Schaible of Mercer, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Alice Chisholm of Sandy Lake, Pa.; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for John C. Weden, who would have been 80 years ole in September will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the residence, 331 Harvard St., and at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with burial in Tod Cemetery.
Mr. Weden died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at his home. He had been a night watchman at the United Engineering and Foundry Co. until his retirement 20 years ago.
Coming to Youngstown in 1882, Mr. Weder was a member of St. Paul’s Church and the Sick Relief League of the Church. He was born in Mechlenberg, Germany, September 3rd, 1956, the son of the late Frederick and Sophia Foidel Weden.
His wife died in 1915. Mr. Weden leaves four daughters, Mrs. Charles Arndt, and Mrs. William Stegman, of Youngstown; Mrs. L. W. McIntyre, of Hubbard; and Mrs. Charles Vogelsang of Cleveland; two sons, Harry of Cleveland and Otto of California; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
