EAST Liverpool -- Frances E. Dawson, 78, of Dresden Avenue, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at City Hospital.
Mrs. Dawson was born Jan. 19, 1923, in Chester. A daughter of the late Otto and Iona Sprout Shroades, she spent her lifetime in this area.
She was employed at the Sterling China Co. at one time and most recently was self-employed as a housekeeper.
She was a member of the Virginia Avenue Church of Christ in Chester and the East Liverpool Moose Lodge 122.
Her first husband, Leland “Pete” Pollock, died in 1943. Her second Husband, Paul V. Dawson, died in 1967.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Darla) Bash of Calcutta and Mrs. Chuck (Patricia) Allison of East Liverpool; a sister, Lela Adkins of Hesperia, Calif.; two brothers, Albert Shroades of Newell and Dan Shroades of Kissimmee, Fla.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by a son, Leland Earl Pollock, in 1943.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Dawson Funeral +Home, with Evangelist Frank Higginbotham of the church officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home from noon to 2 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday
Following the committal service at the cemetery, friends are invited to return to the Dawson Family Center for a luncheon.

BLOOMINGDALE – Edith M. Ewaskovich died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at her residence of natural causes.
She was born in Marlton, Ark., a daughter of the late Lawrence and Lucille Montgomery.

LONGVIEW, Texas – Mrs. Helene Devon Greenwood passed away after a lengthy illness on July 27, 2001.
Mrs. Greenwood, a resident of the Clairmont Nursing Home, had been a Longview resident for the past 21 months. Her former residence was Cole Avenue in Dallas, a city where she and her husband, Leonard T. Greenwood, had lived since 1960.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in February 2001.
Helene J. Devon Greenwood was born June 2, 1920, in Perry Point, Md., to Joseph L. Devon and Josephine C. Buffington Devon. Helene was the fourth of six children. Her brothers, Joseph L., Edward B. and Frances L., and a sister, Beatrice D. Anderson, have preceded her in death.
She grew up in Oxford, Pa., where hs graduated from high school in 1938 and was a well-known athlete in her youth in tennis, golf, swimming and horseback riding. She served her country in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, rising to the rank of Corporal, serving in the Command Headquarters of the U. S. 8th Army Air Force located in the Castle of Lord Sandwich in East Anglia, England. Her future husband, Leonard, and brother, Edward, also served with the 8th Air Force.
She married her husband Len on June 14, 1947, in St. Louis, Mo., and lived in Chicago until moving to Dallas in 1960. She worked as a secretary for Studebaker Motors while in Chicago and in Dallas served as an office manager for the Southland Corp. Mrs. Greenwood and her husband were very active golfers and left Chicago so that they would be able to play year round. They were members of the River Lake Country Club of Dallas.
Mrs. Greenwood leaves a brother, Thomas J. Devon Sr. and his wife June of Whiting, N. J.; and nephews Thomas J. Devon Jr. and his wife Arlene of Longview, Richard Devon and his wife Jerry of Atlanta, Ga., Lynn Devon of Clearwater, Fla., and Charles Greenwood Jr. of East Liverpool. Also suriving are great-nieces Laurie E. Devon of Longview, Julie B. Devon of Dallas and Alex Devon of Atlanta; and a great-nephew, Jeffrey T. Devon of Dallas. She also has surviving brothers-in-law, Robert K. and Charles A. Greenwood of East Liverpool.
A memorial service is pending at Trinity Episcopal Church in Longview with interment in All Saints Memorial Garden located at Trinity Church.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.

EAST LIVERPOOL – Malcolm Edgar McBurney, 89, of Frederick Heights, died Monday, July 23,, 2001, at East Liverpool City Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born in Weirton, W.Va., Feb. 19, 1912, and was te son of the late George and Mary (Rankin) McBurney.
Living his entire life in the area, Mr. McBurney was owner and operator of the former McBurney Pharmacy in East Liverpool for 45 years. He was a graduate of Weirton High School and the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, where he was honored with a 50-year pin and also was associated with the Ohio State Pharmaceutical Association and the Kappa ?Sigma Fraternity. He was a life member of Elks Lodge No. 258 in East Liverpool and the Al Koran Temple in Cleveland, Ohio. He also was a member of the Tri State Casting Club, Masonic Lodges No. 315, No. 55, No 95 and No. 100, East Liverpool Shrine Club, East Liverpool Association of Ancient and Accepted Rite Masons, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Steubenville Censistory, the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio and The East Liverpool Association of Ancient and Accepted Masons.
Mr. McBurney was a veteran of the U. s. Navy, serving during World War II in the Pacific on Admiral Kincades 7th fleet as a lieutenant. He attended Trinity United Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Coleman) McBurney, whom he married July 25, 1941; two nieces, Jana (Franklin) Crawford and her husband Ray of Stow, Ohio, and Marsha (Franklin) Fisher and her husband bob of Strongsville; a nephew, Lee McBurney and his wife Nancy of Weirton; and eight great-nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he also was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert McBurney and Don McBurney.
Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin-MacLean-Altmeyer Funeral Homes on Friday, July 27, 2001,at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Dave Maly of the First United Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

GEORGETOWN, Pa. – Anthony V. Shatkus, 85, of Red Dog Road, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at East Liverpool Convalescent Home No. 2.
He was born in McKees Rocks, Pa., March 1, 1916, a son of he late Peter and Jenny Pepper Shatkus.
He worked at the former TS&T Pottery and was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie Shatkus.
He is survived by a sister, Louise Birbulis of Ingram, Pa.
Father Rodger Hughes will be celebrant of a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.

He was born August 7, 1936 in Paden City, a son of the late Harold Bowen and Velma (Trader) Wilson
He retired from the Weirton Steel Corp. Electrical Dept. with 36 years of service. Harold loved hunting, fishing, camping and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norma Lea (Green) Bowen, at home; three sons, Danny Bowen of New Cumberland, Randy (Brenda) Bowen of Parachute, Co and Eric Bowen of De Beque, CO; two sisters, Erma Birkhimer of Burgettstown and Donna (Abe) Ruiz of Weirton; four grandsons, Eric Bowen of California, Kellen Bowen of Parachute, Lucas Bowen and Jacob Bowen, both of De Beque and 22 nieces and nephews and 20 great nieces and nephews.

He was born March 28, 1925 in Weirton, a son of the late Sava “Sam” and Amelia (Stojakovich) Cuic. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Pete Cuic; six sisters, Mildred Albino, Ann Simich, Mary Tarovisky, Lyla Dawson, Daisy Lorello and Lilly Miller; and a daughter-in-law, Caarol Cuic.
He served in the United States Navy upon the USS Carrier Ommaney Bay in WWII. George was on the carrier January 4, 1945 as a gunners mate when it was hit by enemy fire and sunk in the Sulu Sea. He was rescued but 93 of his crew mates perished. He retired form the Weirton Division of National Steel. He was a member of the Weriton Steel 25 Year Club and the National Rifle Association.
George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marlene (Furbee) Cuic; three sons, George A. and Daniel (Brenda) Cuic of New Manchester, David (Donna) Cuic of Thonotosassa, FL; a brother, Milo Cuic of Follansbee; five grandchildren, Christopher Cuic and fiancée Amanda Ream, Nicole Wooding, AnthonyCuic, Chad Cuic, and Daniel Jr. (Vicki) Cuic; six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Kobe, Skylar, Bear, Ethan and Noah; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen L. Lightner, 78, of Sayre Lane, Lawrenceville passed away at home on Tuesday, March 24, 2009 following a lengthy illness.
She was born June 29, 1930 in Moon township, PA, the daughter of the late Walter and Bertha (Linger) Robinson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Paul A. Lightner Sr; two grandsons, Richard Shingler and Benjamin Lightner; a great granddaughter, Kayla Lightner; six brothers and two sisters.
A homemaker, Helen had previously worked at the former TS&T Pottery and at Fox’s Nursing Home. She was a dedicated and active member of the Chester Church of the Nazarene where she was a member of the church choir and assisted with the nursery care and bible school.
She is survived by three sons, Wiley Lightner of Hopewell Township, Paul Lightner and wife Renee of New Manchester and William J. Lightner of East Liverpool; three daughters, Cathy Rosak and husband Kenneth, Cheryl Glenn and husband Chuck and Charlene Robb and husband Albert, all of Chester; a sister, Mildred Woods of Florida; thirteen grandchildren and twelve Great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 26, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Cummings. Interment followed at the Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

He was born October 15, 1923 in New Cumberland, a son of the late Harry O. and Emma (Wilson) Carson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite D. (Clark) Carson; two brothers, Robert Lee and James Hubert Carson; and two sisters, Iris Gray and Ethelberta Shaw.
Jack was a retired teamster having worked for Tom’s Express. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II and a Protestant by faith. He was a member of the Appalachian Music Group; played on the Senior’s Pool Team at the Hancock County Senior Center; belonged to Country Friends and golfed at Pleasant Hills Golf Course.
He is survived by a daughter, Linda Kay (Tom) Keenan of New Cumberland; two sons, Harry A. (Norma) Carson of New Cumberland and John Richard (Joann) Carson of New Manchester; two ‘grandsons, Brian (Beth) Carson of Beaver and Mark Carson of New Cumberland; two granddaughters, Emilie (Jerome) Jackson of Columbus, OH and Linda (Richie) Soos of Berkeley Springs, WV; three great-grandsons, Marcus Jackson, Josiah Jackson and Issac Carson, a great granddaughter, Alison Carson and his special companion, Ruth Elliot of Weirton.

Jack was retired from Weirton Steel Corporation where he worked as a pipe fitter. He was a member of the Tomlinson Run church of Christ. A World War II U. S. Army veteran, he was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Jack was an avid bowler and a spirited outdoorsman.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nelda Rose (Hostutler) Masters, at home; six children, Gary Masters of Weirton, Pam Jones and Jack Masters, both of New Cumberland, Harold G. A devoted member of the Newell Nazarene Church, she once had worked at Homer Laughlin China. She retired from the Hancock County Board of Education where she worked as custodian.
Opal is survived y two children Bill Howell of Steubenville, and Sandy (Dave) Osborne of Lima, OH; two brothers, Donald (Wanda) Harding of Chester , and Carl Harding of St. Marys; four sisters, Velma Miller of Harrisville, WV, Sharon Beyner of Millersburg, OH, Beulah Gallager of Elk City, OK and Norma Betts of Vienna, WV; five grandchildren, Denise (Jim) Noland, Christy Osborne and her Companion Jon Boyd, and Michelle, Douglas and Jeffery Howell; four great –grandchildren, Kay Lynn, Shawn and Lauren Noland, and Tommy Boyd.

She is survived by five children, Joan Grant, Judy Hamilton, Joyce Stewart, William Stewart and Tim Stewart; seven grandchildren; and two sisters Helen Stewart and Gladys Calhoun.
Friends and family will be received Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. and Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Welch Funeral Home, Hookstown, where services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Wilmer J. Olszewski. Interment will follow in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery, Hookstown.

He was born January 31, 1928 in Salem, WV, a son of the late Raymond Glen and Martha Ann (Harsty) Cottrill. He was also preceded in death by three infant children; two brothers, Raymond G. Cottrill Jr. And Edward Cottrill; and three sisters, Joanne Morrison,Donnie Mae Cottrill and Dorothy Chipps.

Paul Glenn Mackall, Jr., 80, of Alpine Way, Chester passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, at Acuity Specialty Hospital in Steubenville. He had been hospitalized for three weeks.
He was born April 17, 1929 in Georgetown, a son of the late Paul G. and Marie Mackall.
He went to the one room school house in Georgetown and was a member of the Class of 1947 at Midland High School, where he played tuba in the band.
He was a pipe fitter at the former Crucible Steel in Midland and a supervisor at the former Quaker State Oil Refining Corp. in Newell fro 27 years before retiring in 1997.
An avid bowler, he also played league baseball in Georgetown. An artist and pianist, he enjoyed astronomy, geology, history, science and science fiction. One of his favorite authors was Isaac Asimov.
He is survived y his former wife and loving friend, Rosmary Mackall, with whom he resided while she cared for him the past eight years during his illness; a daughter, Amy Leigh and husband, Rick of, Burlington, Ky; a step-daughter Robin Webster, and husband Michael of Chester; two grandchildren, Tyler Picklesimer of Florence, KY and Harmony Myres and husband Dave, of Hebron, KY; two stepgranddaughters, Caitlyn Curtis and husband, Steve of Salem, OH and Chelsea Webster of Chester; two brothers, Kenneth Mackall and wife, Diane of New Manchester, and Melvin “Piff” Mackall of Georgetown; a sister, Donna Simcox, of Chester; his first wife, Marilyn Mackall, of Burlington, KY and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He will be sadly missed by his faithful companion, “Dusty” whom he called “the best dog I ever had.”

Roger S. Balch, 67, of Chester passed away on Friday, April 24, 2009 in the Emergency Room at East Liverpool City Hospital where he was taken after becoming ill at home.
He was born January 9, 1942 in Wellsville, a son of the late Samuel and Mary Balch. He was also preceded in death by a son, Rodney Balch; and four brothers, Watler, Richard, Robert and Doc (Elmer) Balch.
Roger was a veteran of the U. S. Army 16th Infantry 198th Brigade, serving 13 months in Vietnam where he received two purple hearts. Roger was a member of American Legion Post 121, and a life time member of VFW Post 6450 in Chester. He last worked as a kiln fireman at the former TS&T Pottery in Chester. Much of his time was spent enjoying his grandchildren and he was especially proficient at horse shoes and gardening. He loved fishing, watching the Steelers, WVU Mountaineers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Balch; a daughter, Theresa Andews and husband Carl of Chester; a son, Chris Balch and fiancé, Courtney Laughlin of Glenmore; seven brothers, Eugene (Beverly) Balch of Athens, CO, Kenneth Balch, Herman Balch, John (Barbara) Balch, Thomas (Joyce) Brown and Denver (Vickie) Brown, all of Milfield, Oh, James (April) Brown of Todds, OH; two sisters, Mary (Jerry) Phillips of Milfield and Susie Michaels of Chester; four grandchildren; and a step-grandson.

She was a former ware dresser at Homer Laughlin China Company and the owner and operator of Ernie’s Bar and the Crafty Ideas Craft Shop. She attended Grace Baptist Temple and was a member of the Potter’s Club, a social member of the Newell Legion Post 114, Chester Legion Post 121 and Chester VFW.
She is survived by her husband, Ernie Cross Jr., at home; a daughter, Lisa Miller and companion Frank Moore of Chester; a son, Ernie Cross and wife Jolinda of East Liverpool ; a brother, Charlie Reeder of Newell; two grandchildren, Shawn Moore and Seth Cross; a step-grandson, Mike Cross; two great-grandchildren; and two special friends, Carolyn Pruden and Cassy Heaton.

Clyde retired in 1982 from the former Crucible Steel in Midland where he was a foreman. He served as an active member of the Chester Volunteer Fire Department for many years. A Christian by faith, he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. As an aid sports fan, he loyally followed the West Virginia Mountaineers

CHESTER – John Robert Oyserr, 53, of Locust Hill Road, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, a the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Montefiore Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A son of Jesse and Gladys Gracie Oyster of Chester, he was born in Steubenville, Ohio, Dec. 27, 1947, and was a lifetime area resident. Mr. Oyster had worked as a crane operator in the structural mill at Weirton Steel Co.
A veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, Mr. Oyster served as a communications technician with the Submarine Force of the U. S. Navy. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chester where he was a member of the Session for many years along with the Bible Study Group. He attended West Liberty State College and was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Minato-Ku, Tokyo 105 Japan.

In addition to his parents, survivors include three sons, Nathan of Boston, Mass., Nicholas of Rochester, N. Y., and Joshua of Chester. There is one brother, Jeffrey, along with his wife Caroline Oyster of Chester.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 tonight at the Dawson Funeral Home, 215 W. Fifth St., East Liverpool. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Jerry Rose of the First Presbyterian Church of Chester officiating. Burial will take place at the New Manchester Union Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord full military honors.

CHESTER – John Robert Oyserr, 53, of Locust Hill Road, died Saturday, July 14, 2001, a the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Montefiore Hospital following a lengthy illness.
A son of Jesse and Gladys Gracie Oyster of Chester, he was born in Steubenville, Ohio, Dec. 27, 1947, and was a lifetime area resident. Mr. Oyster had worked as a crane operator in the structural mill at Weirton Steel Co.
A veteran of the Vietnam Conflict, Mr. Oyster served as a communications technician with the Submarine Force of the U. S. Navy. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Chester where he was a member of the Session for many years along with the Bible Study Group. He attended West Liberty State College and was a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Minato-Ku, Tokyo 105 Japan.
