FRANCIS, CHARLES WAYNE “CHUCK”, 62, of Wellsburg, died Monday, November 12, 2001, at home. He was born October 17, 1939, in Wellsburg, a son of the late Bert Francis and Ida Headly Francis. He was a welder with United Steelworks of America (Welder Local 14614, Charleston) and a Protestant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine “Gidge” Talamonti Francis. Surviving are a son, Jeff Francis and his wife, Maria of Winston-Salem, NC; three daughters, Judith Rosbrook and her husband, Robert of Fayetteville, NC, Wendy Tortorello and her husband, Steven, and Crystal L. Francis, all of Wellsburg, WV; three grandchildren, Aurora Francis and Joshua Francis, both of North Carolina, and Teilor Stevic of Wellsburg, WV; four brothers, seven sisters. BYHANNA, JAMES W. 76, of West Liberty, WV, died Friday, November 9, 2001, at his daughter’s home in Wheeling. He was born August 11, 1925, in Bethany, WV, a son of the late James Shafter and Anna (Wells) Byhanna. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Blanche (Gilbert) Byhanna; two sisters, Betty Byhanna and Vista Craft. He was retired from Wheeling Steel in Washington, PA, where he worked as a machinist. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy Sea Bee’s. Surviving are two sons, James E. Byhanna of Warwood, WV, and Timothy A. Byhanna of Wheeling; two daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Rebecca) McKee of Wheeling and Mrs. David (Della) Woodrubn Karnich of Weirton; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two step-great-grandchildren. Arrangements are being made by Chambers Funeral Home, Main Street, Wellsburg, WV. Full military honors will be conducted by the Ohio Valley Memorial Squad.

She was born July 13, 1913, in Bellaire, Ohio, a daughter of the late Clinton and Bertha Crosby Hepburn. She retired from the Virginia Shop of Wellsburg with 24 years of service. She was a member of the Wellsburg Christian Church and also a member of the Wellsburg Civic League. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Rockey on December 2, 1988; three sisters, Mildred, Violet and Betty; and a grandchild, Patti DEVaul. Surviving are two sons, Homer DeVaul and his wife, Margaret of Tallmadge, Ohio and Bert DeVaul and his wife, Sue of Bethany, WV; a brother, Jesse Hiel and his wife, Mary Ellen of Houston, PA; two sisters, Mrs. Jack “Ella Mae” Beverage of Shadyside, OH and Mrs. Virginia Williams of Bellaire, Oh; four grandchildren, Randy DeVaul of Cleveland, OH, Joy Mick of Fairlawn, Oh, Jane Buntain of Tallmadge, OH, and Dr. Chanson DeVaul of Goldsboro, NC; and eight great-grandchildren. He was formerly employed at Walt Disney World, Orlando, FL, working in the EPCOT Center Maintenance and Utility Dept. for 10 years, until his illness. He was a veteran of the Navy during Peacetime and was a Protestant by faith. Surviving are his wife, Martha Scott Wilson, to whom he was married in July of 1975; three daughters, Brenda Armtage and her husband, Steve of Virginia Beach, WV, Cheryl Wilson of Florida and Marla and Wayne Gonzalez of IL; three brothers, Mervin Wilson of Wellsburg, Robert and Sharon Wilson of Loughman, FL and Ted Wilson of Loughman, FL; a grandchild, Kendal Armitage of Virginia Beach. SMITH CHARLES F. ‘CHARLIE’, 89, of Ann’s Country Retreat in Wellsburg, WV, formerly of Follansbee, WV, died Tuesday, November 12, 2001, in Weirton Medical Center. He was born October 15, 1912, in Willock, PA, a son of the late William and Mary Soeter Smith. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Eva Morgan Smith in 1994, who was owner and operator of the former St. Luke/s Health Care Center in Follansbee; a brother, Roy W. Smith; and a sister, Ella Mae Clark. He was a retired store manager at the Foodland Supermarket in Wheeling; an Army veteran of World War II; and a member of the Olde St. John Episcopal Church in Colliers, WV. Charlie was an active member of the Wellsburg Loyal Order of Moose No. 164. He was past Governor and Secretary, and served as Club Manager for several years. His highest honor was receiving the Pilgram Degree of Merit, which is the highest honor in the Moose Organization. He was also a member of the Emery Watkins American Legion in Follansbee, WV; a past Quarter Master and member of the V.F.W.. Surviving are several nieces and nephews; and also several great-nieces and great-nephews. Arrangements being made by James Funearl Home, Main Street, Follansbee,WV. Josephine was active in the Brooke County Citizens, The AARP; the Brooke County Easter Seals Society and the Friends of Brooke County Library. He was born May 1, 1922, in Weirton, a son of the late Michael and Florence Murray Lemal; and his wife, Lucille Whitting Clark Lemal. He was retired from Conrail, where he was a brakeman and a conductor. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served on the first landing craft in Normandy. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Steubenville; the Wellsburg Moose, Follansbee and Wellsburg veterans of Foreign Wars, Follansbee; WV; Wellsburg American Legion; and the Fraternal Order of Police, Steubenville, OH. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Whitting Clark Lemal. Surviving are two sons, Norman “Sonny” Clarke and his wife, Sylvia of Follansbee and Thomas Lemal and his wife, Barbara Lemal of Follansbee, WV; two daughters, Dorothy “Dolly” Camerlin and her husband, Richard of Newell, WV; and Naomi Cochran of Steubenville, OH; two brothers, James Lemal and his wife, Peggy of Weirton and John Lemal and his wife, Theresa of Steubenville, Oh; and 12 grandchildren. Clara B. Bobalik, 84, of Chester and formerly of Wellsville, passed away on Saturday March 19, 2011 at Forbes Hospice in Pittsburgh following brief illness.
A daughter of the late Frank and Martha Derda Juszczak, Clara was born on December I, 1926 in Congo near Newell.
Clara worked 40 years as a registered nurse, retiring from the obstetrics department at East Liverpool City Hospital where her primary duties were labor and delivery. After retirement she worked briefly as an RN in the home health field.
A member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester, she was a member and past president of the Sacred Heart Ladies Guild.
She received her nursing degree from the East Liverpool City Hospital School of Nursing.
Her husband, John “Fritz” Bobalik preceded her in death along with three brothers, Joseph, Walter and Cas Juszczak.
Survivors include one daughter, Mary Sue Bobalik of Baden, PA; two sons, John (Beth) Bobalik of East Liverpool and Steve (Deb Zorn) Bobalik of Austintown; her sister-in-law whom she actually referred to as her sister, Fran Juszaczak of Chester; four grandchildren, David, Andrew, Meredith, and Ali Bobalik, and many nieces and nephews.
Rev. Father Eric Antwi presided for a Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 22m 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred heart Catholic Church. Interment at Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville.

Benjamin “Ben” Franklin Booth, 89, of Newell, passed away Thursday, March 17, 2011.
Born September 9, 1921 in East Liverpool, he was a son of the late Ben and Ella Pritchard Booth.
Ben was a World War II, Army veteran. He retired from Globe Brick. Ben was a Charter Member of the Glendale Church of the Nazarene, where he served as song leader, choir director, Sunday School teacher and board member. He was past president of the Upper Hancock County Community Hymn Sing. Ben and his wife, Bea, loved to sing hymns and share devotions at local nursing homes.
Ben was well known and loved by many people in the Tri-State Area as Santa Claus.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice “Bea” Booth, who he married January 24, 1942; four brothers, Bob, Bill, Willard and Harold Booth and a sister, Dorothy Kirby.
Surviving are his daughter, Jane (Cliff) Tiller of Newell; a son, Benjamin Charles (Judy) Booth of North Carolina; his grandchildren, Rich and Jade Booth and family, Eric Booth, Shannon Booth, Les and Tonya Taylor, Brent and Kim Appleby and Kevan and Angie Nelson and family; and two great grandchildren, Monica Taylor and Faith Appleby.
Funeral services were held on Monday, March 21, 2011, at the Glendale Church of the Nazarene in Newell. Pastor Scott Henry officiated. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group and the WV National Honor Guard conducted military services. Private burial followed in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, Newell.

Allan Benjamin Skinner, 36, of New Cumberland passed away Saturday, March 19, 2011 at his residence.
He was born October 11, 1975 in Weirton, a son of the late Gary Grant Skinner, Sr. and Joan (Dave) Holbrook of New Cumberland. He was also preceded in death by his brother Gary Grant Skinner, Jr.
Allan was a member of the New Cumberland VFW Post #3526 and was protestant by faith.
Surviving in addition to his mother are his uncle Lowell (Farmer) Hobbs of New Cumberland; and two nephews, Nathan and Austin Skinner and a niece Makayla Skinner.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 at 3:00 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home in New Cumberland with Pastor Craig Greathouse officiating . Interment followed in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

Pat Martin Mills Blackwell, 69, of Weirton, passed away Wednesday, March 16, 2011.
Born September 27, 1941 in St. Marys, she was a daughter of the late Milford and Alice (Cadegan) Martin.
She was a member of the New Manchester and New Cumberland P.T.A., held various offices in Rhododendron Rebecca Lodge No. 11 and was District Deputy President for two years. She served on the Bicentennial Committee, along with her husband, Jim and mother-in-law, Ruth Blackwell and formed the New Cumberland Fireworks Committee and put on the first fireworks show in New Cumberland.
Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her first husband, John Mills, tow daughters, Shelly Herron and Russella Mills and her youngest son, Jeremy Blackwell.
Surviving are her sons, John (Robin) Mills of Virginia, Munch (Dineen) Mills of New Cumberland and Jason Blackwell and companion, Paula Harrison of Hopewell, PA; ex-husband, Jim Blackwell of New Cumberland; eleven grandchildren, Gave, Brittany, Michelle, Nicco, Zachary, Tori, Madison, Haley, Noah, Austin and Tyler; two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Lillianna; five brothers, Russell, Danny, and Ron Martin all of New Cumberland, Manford Martin of Florida, and Gial Martin of Weirton and three sisters, Eileen Tingler of Tennessee, Idella Grimes of New Cumberland and Allison Martin of Moundsville.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 21, 2011 at the Nixon Funeral Home in New Cumberland. Rev. Bob Staub officiated. Burial followed in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

She was born February 8, 1935 in Shirley, WV, a daughter of the late Elbert and Dolly Price Orr.
She was a member of the Virginia Avenue Church of Christ.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Clutter, whom she married June 30, 1951; a grandson, Randall Waite Jr; two sisters, Freda Wade and Arlene Crim and a brother, Denzil Orr.
She is survived by five daughters, Debbie (Randy) Waite, Jackie (Greg) Helmick and Brenda (Mike) Harris all of New Cumberland, Paula Clutter of Chester and Rebecca (Mike) Lisotto of Oakdale, PA; a son, Gerald (Tracy) Clutter of Chester; nine grandchildren, Brian, Lori, Amy, Jamie, Amanda, Kasey, Nikki, Madison and Alex; nine great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Bridget, Riley, Emma, Avery, Katie, Zeke, Victoria and Abigail; three sisters, Patsy McClelland of Follansbee and Sue Hamill and Glenda Bennett both of Texas; and two brothers, Thomas Orr of Burgettstown and Jerry Orr of New Manchester.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell. Evangelist Frank Higginbotham officiated.
Burial followed in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, Newell.

Carroll Zane (CZ) Mills of Desthrelan, Louisiana, passed away Sat., March 12th in Amedisyus Hospice Care in Metairie, LA, following a lengthy bout with cancer.
Carroll was born at home in New Cumberland on June 18, 1938 to Charles and Jennie (Boso) Mills.
Upon graduation from Wells High School in Newell, he entered the military and served with the U. S. Army in Germany. After his term of service, he returned to the area and worked as a long haul truck driver and was owner and operator of a truck towing service.
He moved to Louisiana in the early 1980s.
Carroll was preceded in death by his parents, two brother, Nile Wayne and Charles Blaine, and a nephew, Corey Anthony Keller.
He is survived by sisters, Jean (Bob) Lockhart and Janet (Rick) Keller, several nieces and nephews and a special some one who became known to him late in life.
Carroll designated his body for research. There are no services planned.

Daniel C. Baker, Jr., P.E., 82 of Beaver, formerly of Brighton Township, died February 12, 2011, in New Brighton, he was a son of the late Daniel C. Sr. and Henrietta (Hoover) Baker. A Professional Engineer and Professional Land Surveyor, he was chairman of the family –owned firm of Daniel C. Baker Associates, Inc., having served numerous municipalities and industrial companies as a civil engineer and surveyor.
A member of the First Presbyterian Church, Beaver, he was an ordained elder of the Presbyterian church, was a member of the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation, and had served as president of the Blockhouse Baker Association, an association of descendants of the earliest settlers in Beaver County.
In 1990, he was named Engineer of the Year by the Beaver County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. In 1993, he received the Founders Award from the Southwest Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Land Surveyors, in 2003, he received a proclamation from the Brighton Township Board of Supervisors for his professional contributions over 43 years, and in 2004 he received the Lifetime Membership Award from the Pennsylvania Association of Sewage Enforcement Officers. In 2006, a scholarship in his name was awarded to incoming freshmen engineering students in Penn State University’s Beaver Campus and he received a commendation for his achievements from the State Senate of Pennsylvania.
He loved farming and horses, having organized and participated in numerous horse shows and clubs. He enjoyed boating, hunting and fishing, and was an avid Penn State fan, having attended many football games with his children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Martha McMullen Baker, whom he married on October 22, 1948; a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Kathie Baker, South Beaver Township; two daughters, and sons-in-law, Christine and Dana Varney, Beaver, and Connie and Chad Weimer, Harleysville, PA; six cherished grandchildren, Lisa Baker King and Kevin King, Idaho Falls, ID, Dalene Varney LaPointe and Christopher LaPointe, South Hamilton, MA, Carla Baker Rebernak and Jeff Rebernak, Sugar City, Id, Clint Baker, Idaho Falls, ID, Clay Varney, Washington, D.C, and Reed Weimer, Harleysville, PA; two great-grandsons, Alden LaPointe, South Hamilton, MA and Garrett Rebernak, Sugar City, ID; two brothers, Robert Baker and Edwin Baker, and a sister, Maryetta Shiring.
Preceding him in death besides his parents were a grandson, Jacob Baker Weimer, and a great grandson, Baker Christian LaPointe.
Friends will be received today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the Noll Funeral Home, Inc, 333 Third St., Beaver.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Beaver, by his pastor, Reverend Jeffrey A. Arnold.
Private entombment will take place at the Sylvania Hills Mausoleum.

Mary was born on February 20, 1917, in Midland, PA, the daughter of the late Milosh and Draginja Ivosevich Vuckovich. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel B. Yurjevic in 1952 and her brother, Nick Vuckovich in 1987 and his wife, Ann, in 1999. Mrs. Jurjevic was homemaker. She was a member of the Holy Resurrection Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church, KSS Vidovdan and the Serbian Mothers Club. Her son, Robert Yurejevic and his wife Georgianna of Chattanooga, TN; her three daughters, Dorothy Yurjevic of Weirton, Elaine Pietro and her husband Tony and Sharon Musulin and Jene Watkins all of Follansbee, WV; her two sisters, Mildred and Louise Vuckovich both of Weirton, survive. Also surviving include her six grandchildren, Terri Ramey and her husband Rob of Venice, FL, Andrea Brown of Chattanooga, TN, Brian and Brianne Pietro, Michael and Bobby Musulin all of Follansbee, WV, her three great-grandchildren, Chad and BradBrackettof Chattanooga, Tn and Lauren Ramey of Venice, FL, her nephew Michael Vuckovich of Dayton, OH. She was a graduate of the 1930 Class of Wellsburg High School. She was also a graduate of the Riggts Memar System of Beauth Culture of Wheeling; class of 1931. Ester was a beautician for 54 years. She was a member of the Beech Bottom Community Christian Church and a Sunday School teacher for 50 years having taught the Beginner’s Class. She was also a member of the Christian Women’s Fellowship. Kenneth Gene Briggs, 80, of Arner Road in Chester, passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011 at the Stone Pear Pavilion at Foxcrest in Chester. His passing was very sudden.
Born and raised on Shennango Run near Pine Grove, WV, Gene was a son of the late Thomas C. and Flossie L. Balwanz Briggs.
Gene is survived by his beloved wife, Joan Hassig Briggs who he married on June 16, 1960; a son, Tom (Becky) Briggs of Chester; daughters, Barbara (R. Bruce) Barrett of Lisbon, and Kim (Roger) Pettit of Marysville, OH; two brothers, Wayne (Margaret) Briggs of Weirton and Jerry (Sandy) Briggs of Wileyville; one grandson Roger “Buddy” Pettit and one step granddaughter, Jamie (Brian) Stine.
Two brothers, Clifford and Carl Briggs preceded Gene in death.
His passion was his farm which kep[t him busy will into his retirement. He retired as a Rigger after 36 years from Weirton Steel where he was a member of the 25 year club.
Gene was a member and Deacon of the Emmanuel Mission near Chester.
He was a Master Sergeant with the U. S. Army, having served form 1948 until 1954. Gene saw heave and prolonged action on the front lines during the Korean Conflict and received the Bonze Star.
Roger Pettit, his son-in-law, and Errett Allison, his good friend, will conduct services today, Thursday, March 17, at 12 noon at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester where his family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at the New Cumberland Cemetery where the Tri-State Veterans burial group and West Virginia National Guard will accord full military honors.
Following services at the cemetery family and friends will meet at the New Manchester Fire Hall.

Howard. E. Ulbright, 91, of New Cumberland passed away Sunday, March 13, 2011, after a brief illness.
He was born, at home, on August 13, 1919 and was the son of the late Charles J. and Elizabeth Ann (Krisnick) Ulbright. He retired from Globe Brick after which he enjoyed spending time on his tractor farming and gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Sarah A. 9Mehaffey) Ulbright, whom he married on June 4, 1942; three daughters, Barbara A/ Troutman of New Caste, Linda L. (Walter :Babe”) Gibbas and Darlene S. Ulbright, all of New Cumberland; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, four brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tues., March 15, 2011, at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell.
Burial followed at Locust Hill Cemetery, Chester.

Born August 4, 1980 in East Liverpool, she was the daughter of Danny and Dyanna (Powers) Miller of Newell.
Kristen graduated from Oak Glen High School in 1999. She received a medical transcription degree at John D. Rockefeller Career Center and formerly worked at the Calcutta Wal-Mart.
She was preceded in death by maternal grandfather, Hubert “Bud” Powers; paternal grandfather, Robert Frank Miller; paternal great-grandparents, Harold and Eleanora Miller.
Along with her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Michaela and a son, Daniel; a sister, Angela (Corey) Ginier of Chester; a niece Addisen; two nephews, Branden and Matthew; maternal grandmother, Ernestine Powers of Chester; paternal grandmother, Kay Lindesmith of Glenmore; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Kristen was deeply loved by her family, she never knew a stranger and lit up any room she entered. She will be sadly missed.
Services were held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell.
Burial followed at Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.

He retired after working 33 years for Weirton Steel, as an electrician and on the railroad and was a member of the Weirton Steel 25 year club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Belle Cooper; an infant daughter, Tina Renee Cooper and two grandsons, Christopher and Corey Cooper and a sister, Belva Nell Cooper Barnhart.

Ralph served in the U.S. Army7, during the Korean War. He last worked for Lafarge Sand & Gravel and formerly worked for Airco Wire Co., and was an avid Dallas Cowboys Fan.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Devore.
Surviving are two sons, Paul (Jackie) DeVore of Weirton and John (Holly) DeVore of Maryland; two daughters, Marie (Ron) Russell of Texas and Michelle (Wendell) Nygren of South Carolina; six grandchildren, Derek, Shawna, Danielle, Ryan, Kyle and Tyler; two great grandchildren, Robin and Eric; five brothers, George Devore of Ohio, Earl Devore of Alabama, Robert Devore of New Cumberland, Richard Devore of Weirton and Samuel Devore of Follansbee; and two sisters, Martha Gittings of Weirton and Mary Lou Goodman of New Cumberland.

She is also preceded in death by her husband Ezra Norman “Dick” Dean.
Carol was a retired school teacher from New Cumberland Elementary, a graduate of Fairmont State College and a member of the First Presbyterian Church and an active member of PYA.
Surviving are her children, Daniel Dean of New Cumberland; Mary Elizabeth (Jeffery) Jones and Ruth Ann (Scott) Douglass both of Weirton; a brother, James A. (Lena)
Bell of Weirton and her granddaughter, Abigal Douglass.
Services were held at the New Cumberland First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Frank Lewis officiating. Interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

He was a member and deacon of the New Cumberland Christian Church, a life member4 of New Manchester V.F.D. and the NRA, and a member of Tomlinson Run State Park Foundation.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jerld Littell and Paul Littell; a grandson, Bryan Roger Littell; and a brother, John Littell.

Larry was a graduate of Newell High School, a Navy veteran, a member of the Newell American Legion and a former President of the Newell Lions Club.
He retired from the Quaker State Oil Refinery in March of 1996 as the Quality Control Assurance Supervisor. In addition Larry was involved in several local youth athletic activities, serving as a former coach for Newell Little League baseball, Chester Cub football, and Newell summer league softball teams.
In addition to his parents, two sons, Clarence and Gary Smithy preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Jody Smith, at home in Chester; his children Lee(Nancy) Smith of Cincinnati, Kit (Jim) Smith, Jody Simcox, and Matthew (Jacki) Simcox all of Newell, and Misty Smith (Trey MacKay) of Salt Lake City; eleven grandchildren, Tim Smith, Mandy McGeehan,
Dustin Kuiken, Rachel Timmons, Joel Timmons, Jackary Kuiken, Greag MacKay, Megan Simcox, Amanda MacKay, Ellie MacKay , and Tim MacKay; 3 great grandchildren, Kennedy McGeehan, Gianna Lamb, and Liam Timmons; a brother, Lee (Ryda) Smith of Vancouver, WA, and a sister, Lois (Hap) DeAngelis of New Jersey.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Monday April 11, 2011 at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell.
Burial followed at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, in Newell where the Tri-State Burial Group and the WV National Honor Guard conducted military services.

Betty Jane Sticco, 86, of Summerfield, FL passed away March 29, 2011. She was born February 26, in McKeesport, PA, a daughter of the late Edwin H. Mathis and Alma B. Thomas Mathis.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Edward H. Mathis Jr.; her husband August J. Sticco; and a stepson, Rancy DeSimone.
She was catholic by faith and attended St. Timothy’s Church. She retired from Weirton Steel Co. where she worked for 29 years.
Surviving are a nephew, Dale E. Mathis of Hilton Head Island, SC; a stepson, Virgil A. DeSimone of Weirton; and two stepdaughters, Linda J. Alley of Weirton and Gina Bichard of Cambridge. She had seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Methodist Church in New Cumberland. There will be private interment of ashes in the family plot at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Weirton.
At Betty’s request memorial donations may be made to a hospice or the American Heart Association.

M. Imogene Brooks Carnes, 78, of Allison Rd, Chester, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the home of her son on Echo Dell RD, East Liverpool following a lengthy illness.
Gene was a daughter of the late Joseph Frank Tittle and Della Blaine Lloyd Tittle and was born in Greenville, TN on June 11, 1932.
A homemaker, she was a member of the Pleasant Heights Baptist Church.
Gene’s first husband, Kenneth R. Brooks Sr. preceded her in death along with four brothers and three sisters.
Her husband Lawrence Carnes survives along with one son, Kenneth. R. Brooks Fr. And his wife Frances of East Liverpool and three daughters, Phyliss Cracraf and Barbara Brooks, both of Youngstown, and Marilyn Armstrong of East Liverpool, In addition eleven grandchildren, several great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 16, at 11:00 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester with Pastor Wagner of the church officiating. Interment followed at Locust Hill Cemetery.

Nila M. (Jones) McNeely, 59, of Williamsburg, VA, formerly of New Manchester, passed away after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer on Tuesday, February 8, 2011.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Herbert A. McNeely; her children; Matthew McNeely, Michelle McNeely, and Sabrina Jones; her sisters, Sarah Ingels and Linda Mercer; her brothers, Kenny (Judy) Jones and David (Mary) Jones; many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Dolly (Lemasters) Jones; her brothers, Charles Jones and Robert D Jones.
Nila worked as a Senior Recreation Leader for the James City County Parks and Recreation for 12 years. She took much joy in touching the lives of the children she worked with. She was always dedicated to her family and will be dearly missed. Funeral services were held on Friday, February 11, 2011 at the Bucktrout Funeral Home with interment at the Williamsburg Memorial Park. Bernice Patricia Szymanek, 87, of New Cumberland passed away Monday, February 7, 2011 at Valley Hospice Trinity East; Steubenville.
She was born October 23, 1923 in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late Andrew and Wanda Nocula radeski. She is also preceded in death by her husband, whom she married May 17, 1945, Mike Szymanek; a son Michael Szymanek; five sisters, Mary Merenda, Josephine Radeski, Wanda Briggs, Stellsa Straka & Carolyn Spencer; 2 brothers, Stanley & Edward Radeski.
Bernice had various jobs, but is most remembered for serving ice cream at Buck’s Home-made Ice Cream in New Cumberland. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Cumberland.
Surviving are : a son, James (Diana) Szymanek, a daughter Susan (Milan) Coxen, all of New Cumberland; a sister, Jan Cronin of Hudson, OH; 4 grandchildren, Chris (Jenn)
Szymanek of Lowell, NC, Elaine Szymanek of New Cumberland, Megan Coxen of Pittsburtgh and Aaron Coxen of New Cumberland; a great-grandson, Chase Szymanek of Lowell, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday, February 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Eric Antwi and Fr. Ronald Getsinger ass Celebrants. Interment followed in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

Richard Stuart Raby, 8o, of Greer, SC passed away, Saturday, January 2, 2011 of cancer.
Richard was a lifelong advocate for service members, having served his country in the Army, surviving almost 2 ½ years as a POW during the Korean War. He was influential in the creation and placement of the Korean War Memorial in Hendersonville, NC.
He appeared on the news, and spoke to newspapers and ROTC groups in an effort to always remind others the ‘Freedom is Not Free’.
Raby was the recipient of several service medals from the U.S. Army.
He was a regular volunteer at Greer Soup Kitchen.
He is survived by his wife, Treva Ellen Barnhart Raby, a former resident of Pughtown, (now New Manchester) and a daughter of the late C. Everett and Ada Barnhart; four daughters, Sharon (Duane) Legere, Bridget (Stephen) Penn, Shelia (Gerald) Johnson, and Cecelia Raby; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, January 6 at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by Chaplain Tracey Bennett.

William Andrew Waggoner, Jr., formerly of New Cumberland, passed away at the home of his daughter in Harpers Ferry on Friday, February 11, 2011.
He was born March 31, 1922 in Gilmer County, West Virginia to the late William A. Waggoner and Oleva Conner Waggoner. Andrew was also preceded in death by his beloved wife Leah Willis Waggoner and his sister, Marjory Trader.
He is survived by his four children: Rebecca Sagle (Jeffrey) of Doswell, VA; William F. Waggoner (Linda Ann) of Las Vegas, NV; Robert Waggoner (Joanna) of Reston, VA; and Sherri Ott (John) of Charles Town. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Alyson Sagle, John Sagle (Emily), Tesha Grangaard (Peter), Luke Waggoner, Grant Waggoner, Clark Waggoner, Leah Ott, Shelby Ott, Matthew Waggoner, Katie Waggoner, and William Waggoner.
Andrew was born, raised, worked and lived his entire life in West Virginia. He loved all things about West Virginia; camping with his family; hunting with his friends, 4-H, the Mountaineers, his church, and just sitting on the porch visiting with friends and family.
Andrew was a 50+ year member of the New Cumberland Christian Church, the Hancock County 4-H All Stars, and was a lifetime member of the West Virginia 4-H All Stars. He retired from Weirton Steel and was a member of the 25 Year Club.
Services will be held Friday, February 18, at 9:30 a.m. at New Cumberland Christian Church. Burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Masonic Cemetery in West Union, WV.

Born September 5, 1951, in East Liverpool, he was son of Irene Church Hoyt of Ohioville and the late Harold Heath.
He worked for Trumbull Metal Company and was a member of the Chester VFW and the Potters Club.
Along with his mother, he is survived by five sons, Roger (Aimee) Heath Jr. of Arizona, Cliff Heath and Kenny (Tonya) Heath, all of East Liverpool, and Christopher Heath and Nathan Heath both of Leetsdale, PA; two daughters, Tracy (Rick) Wallace of East Liverpool and Cassie Heath of Leetsdale; sixteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren; a brother Rodney Heath of Virginia and a sister Pam (Robert) Chaffee of Ohioville.

She was born March 8, 1940 in Holbrook, Pa, a daughter of the late Lloyd and Harriet (Peg) Roberts Spragg.
Ruth was a former guard for Nova Chemicals and a former member of the Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Dept. and Ambulance.
She is survived by two sons, David (Dianne) Strow-matt Jr. of Chester and Darren Strowmatt of Clinton; a brother, Larry (Beulah) Spragg of Texas; a sister, Connie (James) Judy of Pennsylvania and her nieces and nephews, Sandy Baker, Terry Spragg, Chuck Spragg and Deb Fiscus.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home. Burial followed in Mill Creek Hill Cemetery, Georgetown.

She was born October 8, 1921 in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late David M. & Helda R. (Roseberry) Patterson. She was also preceded in death by her husband William Rees and a sister Eleanor Patterson.
Joan was a retired Bank Teller , a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, of Eastern Star and was a retired New Cumberland Cemetery Board Member.
Surviving are her sister, Barbara Smaltz of Weirton and her canine companion Jeb.
Services were held at the Turley Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Robert Staub officiating. Interment followed in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

William L. “Bill” Goodlin, 55, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011 at UPMC in Pittsburgh
Son of the late Kenneth and Norma Jean Goodlin, he was born in Rochester, PA on June 121, 1955.
Bill attended Oak Glen High School and worked at the former New Castle Refractories in Newell.
He enjoyed coaching baseball, hunting, and fishing and was a Pittsburgh sports fanatic!
Bill is survived at home by his wife, Debbie Goodlin, whom he married July 20, 1979; four sons, Terry Goodlin, of VA, Billy (Kayla) Goodlin, Brian Goodlin and companion Jossalyn Shaw, and Luke Goodlin, all of Chester; one daughter, Jolie Goodlin, of WY; three brothers, Kenneth Goodlin of East Liverpool, David Goodlin, of NC and Scott Goodlin, of Chester as well as grandchildren, Zachary, Jacob, Anda, Eric, McKayla, Kholton, Paisleigh, and was looking forward to the arrival of granddaughter, Alexa, later this month.
Bill will be missed by his beloved dogs, Cooper and Bear.
Rev. Phil Fairchild, of the First Christian Church of Chester, conducted services at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the Arner Funeral Chapel. Burial followed at Locust Hill cemetery.

Twyla M. Sayre, 90, of Leander Dr., Chester passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Nentwick's Convalescent Home in East Liverpool following a lengthy illness.
Twyla was a daughter of the late Cyrus Homer Sayre and Nova Kessel Sayre and was born on September 14, 1920 in Chester.
A member of the Church of Christ Disciples in East Liverpool, she retired in 1990 from the Medi-Mart Medical Supply Company in East Liverpool. Earlier she had worked several years at the Citizens Drug Store in Chester.
Preceding her in death were two sisters, Mildred Gill and Florence Blankenship, and four brothers, Chester, Herman, Raymond , and Curtis Sayre.
Survivors include her sister with whom she resided, Lois Ewing of Chester and several nieces and nephews.
Rev. Willard Chuck Adkins of the Church conducted services on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 at 11 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester. Interment followed at the Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.

Born January 14, 1948, Nancy was a daughter of the late Stewart and Shontz (Durbin) Dunn.
She was a former teller at Northern Hancock Bank & Trust in Newell, a past member of the Chester VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Chester.
Surviving are her husband, Andy Haught at home; a son, Bobby Jay Haught of Iowa; a daughter, Erin (Denny) Bailey of Chester; four grandchildren, LeAnn Haught, Sydney Haught, Drew Bailey and Luke Bailey and her first great-grandchild on the way; a brother Robert (Irene) Dunn of Florida and by a canine companion, “Maggie.”
Following visitation a memorial service was held on Monday, April 4, 2011 at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell. Rev. Trina Lewis officiated.

Donna was a 1957 graduate of Wells High School; a former Nurse’s Aide at East Liverpool Hospital; and a member of the Congo Church of the Nazarene.
Along with her parents, she was p;receded in death by her husband, Edward Childs.
Surviving are her daughter, Virginia Childs of Steubenville and a brother, James (Erma) Mercer of Columbus.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday Mar. 20, 2011, at the Nixon Funeral Home in Newell. Burial was held at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, Newell.

Charles Edgar Van Camp, 81 of New Cumberland, passed away Thursday, March 24, 2011 at Weirton Medical Center.
He was born October 22, 1929 in New Martinsville, a son of the late Samuel and Alma Jane (Forrester) Van Camp. He is also preceded in death by three brothers Edwin, Alfred Leroy and Robert Lee Van Camp.
Charles retired in 1984 from National Steel Blooming Mill with 33 years of service and was a member of the 25 year Club.
He was a member of the Colliers Way Church of Chris, Weirton American Legion, a Lifetime member of the Weirton VFW and was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife Shirley Ann (Mercer) Van Camp at home, two sons, Charles Jay Van Camp and Kevin Lee Van Camp both at New Cumberland; two sisters, Lorena Stewart of Sistersville and Melissa Evalyn Riggs of New Philadelphia; two brothers, Joseph W. Van Camp of Paden City and Shannon Ray Van Camp of Middlebourne; and one grandchild, Chase Atlee Van Camp.
Services were held Saturday, March 26, 2011 at the Turley Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Derby officiating. Military graveside services followed at the New Cumberland Cemetery.
