Lester S. Fryer, 76, of Newburgh Heights, OH passed away Saturday, March 14, 2009 at home.
He was born August 24, 1932 in New Cumberland, a son of the late William Leonard Fryer and Daisy Jewel (Swango) Fryer. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Malcom Fryer and sisters, Genoa Center and Mildred Enberg.
He was the beloved husband of Judith Jones Fryer; dear father of Ona Lisa Fryer and Debora Lynn (Jose) Padilla; grandfather of Tiffany, Jose Jr., Joshua and Nichole and brother of Bill Fryer Fr., Dale Fryer and Velva Jones.
Lester was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. He was retired from LTV Steel and had a love for gardening, hunting and fishing.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, March 19, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Staub officiating. Interment will follow at the New Cumberland Cemetery.

Bernadette Dugas Watson, 73, of New Cumberland wnet home to heaven on Sunday, March 15, 2009 with her loving family at her side.
Bernie was born February 13, 1936 in Slovan, PA, a daughter of the late Steve and Mary (Hvizdos) Dugas. Bernie was the twelfth of fifteen children. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Beharry, Pauline Michalski and Elizabeth Dugas; and brothers, Albert, Bill and Edward Dugas.
She was the wife, best friend and love to her husband, Arthur “Jack” Watson, who survives. Bernie and Jack celebrated their fifty-first anniversary on May 11, 2008. She was the proud mother of four children including two daughters, Corinne (Rick) Shreve and Teresa Watson, both of New Cumberland; and two sons, Arthur (Loretta) Watson of New Cumberland and Michael (Deneen) Watson of Cuyahoga Falls, OH. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Joseph and Adam Strapozzon, both of Weirton; Amanda Watson of New Cumberland, timothy “Shreve of New Cumberland, and Emily and Brock Watson of Cuyahoga Falls; two great-grandchildren Marlee and Maisy Richmond-Strapazzon of Weirton; three sisters, Theresa Dugas, Martha Resnik and Francis Gilbert; five brothers, George, Tony, Steve, Lou and Martin Dugas and several nieces and nephews.
Bernie was a member of the New Cumberland immaculate Conception Catholic Church where she was a member of the choir and the Catholic Woman’s Club, which she so enjoyed. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Slovan.
A Mass and Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Fr. Ronald Getsinger as celebrant. Interment followed at the New Cumberland Cemetery. Turley Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Woman’s Cub and or Valley Hospice in Bernadette’s name.

She was born May 8, 1942 in Seoul, Korea.
She was a self-employed sales associate.
Surviving are her daughter, Sabrina Jones of Weems, VA; five brothers and sisters, and many friends.

Ellyn J. McHenry, 91,formerly of Chester, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at AlterCare of Nobles Pond in Canton following a lengthy illness.
She was born January 14, 1918 in East Palestine, a daughter of the late Andrew and Elizabeth Dailey Widdowfield. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Russell McHenry; two sisters, Mary Moore and Louise lodge, and a son-in-law, Bill Erlitz.
Ellyn retired from the Homer Laughlin China Co. in Newell where she held several jobs over the years, but last worked as a mail delivery person. She was a member of the Chester Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she was very involved with the Ladies Guild. She was an active member of the Chester Arts Club and an avid bridge player.
She is survived by a daughter, Cynthia Erlitz of Canton; a grandson, Mark Erlitz and wife Jane and their children Kendra and Griffin; and a granddaughter, Darby Dummermuth and children, Britney and Jacob.
Rev. Father Lino P. Eberfer was the celebrant for a Mass of Christian Burial with liturgy on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at 10:oo am. At the Sacred Heart Church. Entombment followed at the Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

Clifton R. Huff Obituary

Clifton R. Huff, 94, of Fox Lane, Chester passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at the East Liverpool City Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born January 19, 1915 in East Liverpool, a son of the late Ray P. and Edna Peterson Huff. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Velma Connell and Virginia Tallman.
A life time resident of Hancock County, he along with his wife Arline whom he married on April 22, 1939 and who passed away on February 14, 2008, owned and operated Huff’s Service Station in Chester for 30 years. A very active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chester, Cliff at one time served as an elder and trustee.
He was the only remaining charter member of the Chester Lions Club where he was combined secretary and treasurer for the first year and president in 1972-73. He enjoyed being chairman of the broom and light bulb sales and attending many state conventions along with his wife.
A veteran of the U. S. Army, he served in the European theater during World War II where he was a heavy machine gunner in Co. 123rd Infantry. Cliff was a member of Chester American Legion Post 121 where he had served as service officer and treasurer. He was also a member of the Chester VFW Post 6450. An avid golfer, he spent several days a week on the course, just up until a few years ago.
He is survived by his son, James R. Huff and wife Debby of Coco, FL; a daughter, Janice Huff and he life companion Barbara Rudaitis of Pittsburgh; a granddaughter, Jessica Huff of Pittsburgh; a niece, Mary Kay Connell, and a cousin Jacky Rothermund.
A memorial service was held on Friday, May 15, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church with Rev. Katrina Lewis officiating. Interment followed a the locust Hill Cemetery.

James Ray McCartney Sr., 79, of Chester passed away Monday, May 11, 2009
He was born April 16, 1930 in Parkersburg, a son of Rebecca Huber McCartney of Chester and the late Judson McCartney.
James was a former maintenance man at Hancock House in New Cumberland.
Besides his mother, he is survived by two sons, James Ray Fr. And David McCartney of Ohio; five grandchildren; two sisters, Joann Davis of Toronto and Betty Cain of New Cumberland; and two brothers, Dale McCartney Sr. of New Cumberland and Bobby Gene McCartney of Follansbee.
The Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home handled private funeral arrangements.

Maria Kathleen Robinson of Weirton, Infant daughter of Christopher and Bridget (Hobbs) Robinson , died April 23, 2009 in the Weirton Medical Center.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Daniel, Sister, Sarah; grandparents Ron and Betty Robinson and Robert and Joanne Hobs; great grandmothers Elmadean Robinson and Angelina Swartz.
A graveside service was conducted by Reverend Father Larry Dorsch at St. Paul Cemetry, Weirton.

Christopher J. Smay, 42, of Linwood, in Cincinnati, passed away April 20, 2009.
He is survived by parents Howard and Kay (Chamberlain) Smay, of Milford; sister Cathy (Donald) Robbins, of Loveland, OH; nephews and niece, Nathan, Zachary and Stephanie Robbins; grandmother Billie Smay of Saxonburg, PA; and uncles and aunts Ed and Naomi Chamberlain, of New Cumberland, Gary and Joyce Smay of Saxonburg, PA, and Eliane and Bill Mullineaux of Lancaster, PA.
Chris was a computer programmer and at one time, a cabbie in Cincinnati.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the New Thought Unity Center, 1401 E. McMillan St., East Walnut Hills, Cincinnati.
As Chris would have wanted, a celebration of his life was held immediately following at Arnold’s Bar and Grill in downtown Cincinnati.
Donations in Chris’ memory may be made to WNKU radio or local food banks and free stores. He also wished to have a willow tree planted nest to a river in his memory.

Survivors include one daughter, Janice Fieck of Columbia and two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren..
Interment will be at the Locust Hill Cemetery at a later date. The Arner Funeral Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Vincent John Swiger, 36, of Morgantown, formerly of New Cumberland passed away Saturday, June 13, 2009 in Morgantown.
He was born November 14, 1972 in Stuttgart, Germany.
Vincent had 10 years of outstanding service in the United States Navy, serving in the Persian Gulf War and loved to hunt and fish.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, George and Mray Rita Herron and his paternal grandfather, Harry “Bud” Swiger.
He is survived by his parents Danny E. Swiger of Friendly WV and Rita Herron Burkey and Martin of New Cumberland; two sons, Joel Adam Swiger of PA and Vincent Michael Swiger of Morgantown; a daughter, Jamie Lee Swiger of PA; paternal grandmother, Phyllis D. Swiger of New Cumberland; a sister, Anne Marie Barland of Roscoe, IL; and three brothers, Danny Paul Swiger and Edward McCoy Swiger, both of New Cumberland and Thomas Michael Swiger of Weirton.
Friends will be received at the Turley Funeral Home on Thursday, June 18, from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Services will be there on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the New Cumberland Cemetery.

He was born July 2, 1955 in Weirton, a son of Ruth Talbot McPherson of New Cumberland and the late William A. McPherson.
He graduated from Oak Glen High School, Class of 1973 and attended the First Baptist Church.
Besides his mother; he is survived by a son, Andrew Phillip McPherson and a grandson, Quinlian Andrew McPherson, both of Montana; a sister, Anita R. McDonald and companion Rob Mumford of New Cumberland; two nieces, Megan McDonald and companion Zack Mumford and Michelle McDonald; a great Niece, Jade Mumford; and his faithful canine companion, Dakota.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home with Pastor Larry Rose officiating. Interment followed at the Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

She was born August 20, 1923 in Junction City, OH< a daughter of the late John and Nellie Ray McCoy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest L. Cooper Sr.; a son, Ernest “Larry” Cooper Jr.; three brothers, Fred, Charles, and Tom McCoy and a sister, Hazel.
Mildred retired form Weirton Steel as a lab technician.
She is survived by a son, Robert K. Cooper of Weirton; three grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at the New Cumberland Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home. Interment followed a the Union Cemetery in New Manchester.

Carol Ann Wright Smith, 73, of Veterans Blvd., Chester passed away Friday, May 1, 2009 at Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville following a lengthy illness.
Carol was born /December 23, 1935 in Chester, the daughter of the late Max C. And Stella M. Wright . She was also preceded in Death by a daughter, Lisa Kay Smith; two brothers, Ronald and Larry Wright,; and a brother-in-law, Willard K. DeLong.
She was a member of the Chester First Christian Church. Carol worked many years in the office of Oak Glen High School before retiring.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lester “Pete” Smith, whom she married on Feb. 12, 1954; three daughters, Leslie (Ed) Fields of New Cumberland, Debbie (Bruce) Davis of Weston WV: and Lori (Bob) Plummer of East Liverpool; a son, Barry L. Smith of St. Clairsville, OH; a sister; Shirley DeLong of Burnet, TX; ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Larry Smith of Chester; two sisters-in-law Mary Ann Wright and Ann Wright, both of Chester; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday May 4, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel with Pastor Phil Fairchild officiating. Interment was private at the Mill Creek Hill cemetery in Georgetown.

James Calvin “Jim Bob” Humbert III, 57, of New Cumberland passed away on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at his residence.
He was born April &, 1952 in Waynesburg, PA, a son of James Humbert Jr. of Greensboro, PA and the late Gladys (Jamison) Humbert, who passed away December 2007. He was also preceded in death by his son, Jason Humbert in 2004.
He was a lighting specialist for Lightoiler in PA. He was a member of the Civil Air Control in Vietnam. Jim Bob held an associate business degree from Baltimore Community College. He was a Methodist by faith, a member of the NRA and a social member of the New Cumberland VFW Post #3526.
Surviving in addition to his father is his wife, Barbara Ellen (Hurst) Humbert, at home; a daughter, Brianna Humbert of Latrobe, PA; two step-children, Michelle Wallace and Richard Dennis, both of Weirton’ a sister, Trina Friday of Greensboro; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the Turley Funeral Home with Pastor Charles Jerman officiating.

James D. Summers, 77, of Weirton, died on Monday April 27, 2009 at Trinity West Medical Center in Steubenville following a brief illness.
He was born July 4, 1931 in Hollidays Cove, a son of the late Carl and Alta Summers. He was also preceded in death by a son, Mitchell Summers; and six brothers, Carl Jr., Robert, Gene, Royce “Pete”, Carroll “Mouse”, and David Summers.
Jim retired as a millwright in the coke plant at National Steel in Weirton where he was a member of the 25 year club. He was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, and served in the Korean Conflict. A member of the Philadelphia Church of God, he was a life member of the Tri-State Marine Corps.
H is survived by his wife, Shirley Summers; three sons, David (Linda) Summers of Richmond, OH, Michael Summers of Weirton, and Randy (Colleen) Summers of Warwood; a daughter, Diane Morton of Charlottesville, VA; a brother, Jack Minger of Colliers; a sister, Carolyn Krynecki of New Cumberland; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family and burial will be private. Arner Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Willard Clemmer Gardner, St., 74, of New Cumberland passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009 at East Liverpool City Hospital.
He was born May 24, 1934 in Hollidays Cove, the son of the late Albert and Edna Mae (Virtue) Gardner. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Viola Sinsel.
Willard retired from Weirton Steel Corp. where he worked as a millwright. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving in both the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam. He was a member of the Weirton Wesleyan Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marguerite Arlene (Huggins) Gardner, at home; five children, Rita Jo Lockard and Willette Decker, both of New Cumberland, Willard C. Gardner Jr., of Newell and Betty Zevios and Barbara Williamson, both of Weirton; 13 grandchildren ; three great-grandchildren; and lots of friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home with Rev. Marvin Taylor officiating. Military graveside services followed at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

Virgil E. Streets, 78, a tireless worker, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009 at the Valley Hospice Care Center North in Steubenville following a lengthy illness.
He was born November 9, 1930 in Hastings, WV, the son of the late Enos and Lulu Morgan Streets. He was also preceded in death by a son, Virgil E. Streets Jr.; a granddaughter, Sherry Higgins; four brothers and two sisters.
Virgil retired from the TOC Dept. at the former Crucible Steel in Midland where he had worked 30 years.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Geer Streets; a daughter, Barbara Higgins of Chester; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, including Travis Higgins, whom he raised.
Family services was private and interment was made at the Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.
The Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester was in charge of arrangements.

Ronald J. Yorko, 67, of Carolina Avenue, Chester, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009, at the East Liverpool City Hospital following a brief illness.
He was born July 20, 1941, in New Cumberland, a son of Alberta Yorko of New Cumberland and the lat Joseph Yorko.
Ronald was a member of the New Cumberland High School Class of 1959. He returned to the Chester area in 1979 after serving 20 years in the U. S. Army during which time he fought in the Vietnam War serving in Cu Chi, Vietnam. He was the Plant Manager at Resco Products Inc, formerly known at the Crescent Brick Co., in New Cumberland
In addition to his mother, he is survived at home, by his wife, Deborah M. Yorko, whom he married June 26, 1965; two daughters, Sandra Crawford and husband Ronald of East Palestine, and Catherine Talbert and husband Christopher of East Liverpool; a son, Ronald A. Yorko and wife Amber of Exmore, VA; two sisters, Francine Moore and husband Ed, and Brenda Koski and husband Jay, all of New Cumberland; a brother, Jerry Yorko and wife Sherry of Toronto; and two grandchildren, Ronald Crawford of East Palestine and Natalie Talbert of East Liverpool.
Prayers were said at 8 p.m. Sunday, May 10, 2009 at the Dawson Funeral Home in East Liverpool, led by Pastor Timothy W. Martin.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.

Richard Wayne “Dick” Greenwood, 85, of New Cumberland passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at the Weirton Medical Center.
He was born in Georgetown, a son of the late Summer J. “Sam” and Catherine L. (Brooks) Greenwood. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Albert Greenwood; a sister, Donna Weber; and a grandson, Douglas Wayne Greenwood.
Dick was retired from the Army Corp of Engineers as assistant lock master at the New Cumberland Lock and Dam #9; he was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II. He was a member of and a deacon at the New Cumberland Christian Church; past master of the New Cumberland Lodge #22 AF &AM; past high priest of Hancock Chapter #14 RAM; and past commander of the Weirton Commandary #30 Knights Templar. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, whom he married on July 30, 1948, Kathryn Faye (Haney) Greenwood of the Orchards at Foxcrest Nursing Home, Chester; his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Susan Greenwood of New Cumberland; two sisters, Doris Loy and Husband, Denver of Benwood and Mildred Hall of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Kim Franczek and husband Joby and Dani Lightner and husband Kevin, all of New Cumberland and T. J. Greenwood and wife Ursula of Lansing, MI; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Donovan Franczek, Christian, Derek and Allison Lightner and Logan Greenwood and Justin Schmalstieg.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 10, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home with Minister Rick Tinsky officiating.
Military and Masonic graveside services followed at the Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.

Mrs. Whetstone, Teacher Dies

Pioneer instructor in Public School Succumbs at Home in East End Saturday.

Mrs. Effie McKinnon Whetstone, teacher in the Horace Mann Building and one of the oldest instructors in point of service in the East Liverpool schools, died Saturday at midnight at her home at Mulberry and Railroad streets, East End, after 10 days' illness of pneumonia.

Mrs. Whetstone was a daughter of the late George D. and Julia E. McKinnon, her family being pioneers of Columbiana County, She was also a granddaughter of the first white child born in the county. She was a member of the Pennsylvania Avenue Methodist church and associate councilor of Purity council No. 7 Daughters of America.

She leaves one daughter, Miss Edna Whetstone; a brother, George E. McKinnon and an aunt, Mrs. Zillah Davidson of East Liverpool

Funeral services will be held in the home Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in charge of Rev. E.R. Reed, pastor of the Methodist Pennsylvania Avenue Methodist church. Burial will be made in Riverview Cemetery.

Mrs. Julian McKinnon Aged 70, Died Sunday

Mrs. Julia E. McKinnon, aged 70, well known East End woman, died at her home on Mulberry street at 2:45 o'clock Sunday afternoon as a result of a stroke of apoplexy, the second of which came Saturday.

She was a daughter of the late Rev. Mrs. David Colclough, and was born in New York state on Sept. 5, 1846, The family later removed to Jersey City. In 1855 they came to East Liverpool, where Mrs. McKinnon has since resided. Her father was a Methodist clergyman.

Shortly after the end of the civil war she and George McKinnon were married. He died about 12 years ago. Two children were born to the union. Mrs. Effie Whetstone and George E. McKinnon, both of this city.

Mrs. McKinnon was a charter member of the Pennsylvania Avenue Methodist Episcopal church. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters.

LONG ILLNESS TAKES GEORGE E. MCKINNON

George Edgar "Ed" McKinnon, 69, a life-long resident of East Liverpool, died Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at his home on Railroad street from acute indigestion. He had been an invalid for 40 years, however, from a rare form of paralysis.

Mr. McKinnon was born June 30, 1870 the son of George Dillow and Julia Colclough McKinnon, residents of Ohio City, now East End. He was a descendant of the famous Indian scout and pioneer, Joseph McKinnon.

Mr. McKinnon's grandfather was George Dillow McKinnon, believed to be the first white child born in Columbiana county.

Before his illness, Mr. McKinnon was a sagger maker in the local potteries his last place of employment being the West End plant. Shortly after becoming ill, he opened a wallpaper store on Mulberry Street and conducted the establishment until 20 years ago when illness forced him to discontinue his business activities.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania Ave. Methodist Episcopal church and the Junior Order of United American Mechanics.

He is survived by his widow, Nellie Dawson McKinnon; one son, Clair D. McKinnon of Ambridge; a granddaughter, Mary Sue McKinnon of Ambridge; an aunt, Mrs. Zilla Davidson of East Liverpool, Ohio, and a niece, Mrs. Edna Whetstone Price of Syracuse, Ohio, a sister Effie McKinnon Whetstone, died previously.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at the home in charge of Rev. Norman R. Somerville, pastor of the Pennsylvania Avenue Methodist Episcopal church.

Burial will be in Riverview cemetery.

GEORGE D.M'KINNON DEAD AS A RESULT OF ACCIDENT

Well Known and Respected Citizen Whose Parents Were Pioneers of Columbiana County.

HE WAS ALSO A VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR

George D. McKinnon, aged 60 years, died at his home, Mulberry and Railroad street, East End, at 7 o'clock this morning from the results of an injury sustained on the morning of the Fourth of July. Due was due to paralysis, which developed from the shock of the accident and from nervous collapse. The funeral services will be held at the late home Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J.N. Swan, who was a close friend of Mr. McKinnon, has been selected to conduct the services, but owing to ill health he may not be able to respond, in which event Rev. N.M. Crowe, of the Second Presbyterian church, will be called upon. The interment will be made in Riverview cemetery.

Mr. McKinnon was one of the best known and most respected man in this city. He was universally liked. His frankness of speech, abrupt manner and keen sense of the right brought him out prominently among men and won for him the confidence and friendship of all. Mr. McKinnon was noted for his promptness in relieving distress among the needy but he was just as quick in refusing assistance to the unworthy. He never wronged a man and never suffered an injustice to be dealt out to him.

Mr. McKinnon was born at the old McKinnon homestead, which still stands in the East End, in what is now the Midway addition. He was one of the children died 60 years ago and his the first death since. His father was George McKinnon, who was said to be the first white child born in Columbiana County. This fact is recorded in several Ohio Valley histories. He died in 1880 at the age of 85.

For a number of years Mr. McKinnon followed the occupation of a stationary engineer. He spent all his life here and upon giving up his trade became a merchant in the place he was conducting at the time of his death. It is stated that many of the people who began to trade with him when he started 14 years ago were his customers until his death.

In connection with his establishment Mr. McKinnon conducted an ice cream parlor and for 14 years had made ice cream in freezers operated by hand. About a month ago he had installed an electric motor and it had been in use only three weeks when the accident occurred that cost him his life. On the morning of July Fourth his right hand was caught between the cogs and before he could stop the machine the third and fourth fingers and the hand up to the wrist had been ground to a pulp.

The shock of the accident was so great that a nervous condition followed and his general health began to break gradually. The wound was healing nicely, but Sunday paralysis of the throat developed, since which time recover was hopeless.

Mr. McKinnon was a soldier during the civil war, serving in the 115Th Ohio volunteers, the regiment commanded by Col. William R. Hill. He was a charter member of the Peabody lodge, No. 19, Knights of Pythias, a charter member of the Buckeye Castle, No. 98, Knights of the Golden Eagle,and a charter member of Ohio Valley Council, Sr. Order of American Mechanics. He was at one time a member of the Methodist Protestant church, but at the time of his death had no church affiliation.

The family connection is quite large, of the immediate relatives there survive his wife and two children, George D. and his wife Effie McKinnon, of the East End; the following brothers and sisters; Addison of Los Angeles, Cal; John of his city; Joseph B. of this city; Michael, of Holliday's Cove; Mrs. Samuel Stewart, of the Calcutta road; Mrs. Rebecca Dobbs, of Dixonville, Mrs. Addie Price, of this city; Mrs. John Glasure, of Penrith, West Virginia, Mrs. Zilla Davidson, of this city, and two half brothers and a half sister, as follows; Leonidas McKinnon, of Braddock; Harry McKinnon of Freedom, and Mrs. Joseph (?) of New Brighton.

LEETONIA – Frank E. Andre Sr., 72, of state Route 344, died at 6:35 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at the Salem Convalescent center following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Youngstown Sept. 9, 1928, a son of the late Roger J. and Laura Kerr Andre.
He was employed as a core maker at Columbiana Pump Co. until retiring and served with the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Townsend Andre.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Kay) Eckman of Boardman, Mrs. Larry (Pearl) Davis and Mrs. Robert (Betty) Davis of East Liverpool; two sons, Wlater Andre and Frank Andre Jr. of East Palestine; three sisters, Florence Barber of Boardman, Gladys Schweitzer of East Palestine and Mrs. James. (Jane) Hulton of New Waterford; and five grandchildren.
Pastor Jim Gaston will conduct services at 11 a.m. Wednesday a the Woods-Rettig Funeral Home in Leetonia. Burial will be in New Waterford Cemetery.

HOOKSTOWN – Geraldine E. Swaney, 81, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001, at the Medical Center, Beaver, following a lengthy illness.
She was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., July 5, 1920, a daughter of the late David F. and Mary E. Graham Lemon.
She retired as a cook for the South Side School District after 30 years service. She was a member of the Mill Creek United Presbyterian Church of Hookstown and its women’s association, the Hookstown Grange 1980 and the Mill creek Valley Historical Society. She was active as a cook and baker of the Hookstown Fair for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Hall Swaney, in 1960, and three brothers. Scott Lemon, Gilbert Lemon and Robert P. Lemon.
She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Larry H. Swaney of Hookstown and Duane and Linda Swaney of Beaver; two grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Richard (Catherine V.) Andrews of Buckhannon, W.Va., and Naomi W. Dixon of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two sisters-in-law, Helen Lemon Lagota of Springhill, Fla., and Jennie Lemon of California; two nieces, Kathleen Woodman and Louise Simm; and special family friends.’ Friends will be received from 7 to 9 tonight and form 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Welch Funeral Home in Hookstown.

She was born in Ohioville Feb. 15, 1936, a daughter of the late Stephen and Helen Roseplier Jones.
She was employed in the chem. Lab department at the former Crucible Steel Colt Industries before retiring and was a member of the St. Blaise Parish.
She was preceded in death by a son, David Gailey.
She is survived by three, daughters, Rita Gailey of New Brighton, Mrs. Robert (Robin) Powell of Industry and Sharon Gailey of Aliquippa; two brothers, Richard Jones of Ellwood City, Pa., and Robert Jones of Industry; nine grandchildren and a great-grandson.

COLUMBIANA – Thomas J. Davidson, 88, formerly of East Liverpool, died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at St. Mary’s Alzheimer Center following a brief illness.
He was born in Fredericktown Nov. 11, 1912, the sone of the late Wiliam E “Ted” and Verda Blazer Davidson.
Living his entire life in the area, Mr. Davidson retired Oct. 28, 1974, from the former Crucible Steel Co. in Midland, where he worked as a maintenance welder. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy, serving during World War II and was baptized at the College Street Christian Church in Olympia, Wash. He was past commander of American Legion post 374 in East Liverpool and the Columbiana Counsel of American Legions. He was a member of the Negley Masonic Lodge 565, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 1506 in East Palestine, past president and life member of Tri-State Organization of La Societte, Auxiliary of State Highway Patrolmen and East Liverpool Veterans Council.
His wife, Elizabeth Tittle Davidson, whom he married in June of 1952, died Jun 9, 1983.
He is survived by three sons, Robert E. Davidson of Negley, Gordon G. Davidson of Columbiana and Richard J. Davidson of Morneo Valley, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Elzie) Legg of Olympia, Wash., Mrs. Ron (Ruth) Geer of East Liverpool and Mrs. Gloyd (Alverda) Dearth of Delaware, Ohio; 36 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, he also was preceded in death by a son, William G. Davidson.
Services will be held at the Calcutta Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, with Pastor David Elmore of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Marysville, Ohio.
Burial will follow in Crest Haven Memorial Gardens in Rogers, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord full military honors.

He was born in East Liverpool Feb. 12, 1939, the son of the late Robert T. and Susan Croft Harding.
Mr. Harding lived his entire life in the area and had worked for several local potteries. He retired from the Iron City Distribution Co. where he worked as a truck driver.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Janice Taylor Harding, whom he married Nov. 23, 1968; two brothers, David A. Harding Sr. and Jeff Harding of East Liverpool; two sisters, Mrs. James (Merry Sue) Brown of Vermillion, Ohio, and Mrs. Kenneth (Marty) Cramer of East Liverpool. Several nieces and nephews, and his two faithful companions, Toby and Benjie.
Services will be held at the East Liverpool Chapel of the Martin MacLean Altmeyer Funeral Homes at 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2001, with the Rev. Delmar Logston of the Oakland Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Riverview cemetery.

He was born in Chester, W.Va., April 14, 1923, a son of the late George D. Bennett and Helen Lewis Reaukauf.
A Tri-State Area residen before moving to California in 1948, he graduated from Wellsville High School in 1942. He retired from Lockheed Aircraft Corp., Burbank, Calif., in 1986.
He is survived by four daughters; Darlene K. Waller with whom he resided, Connie M. Fry of Lake Elsinore, Karen M.Petrie of East Liverpool and Debbie A. Davis of Fort Langley, Canada; a brother , Harry A. Bennett of Amsterdam, Ohio; a sister, Roberta Kisner of East Liverpool; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, June Ellen Siddell of East Liverpool; two brothers, Ross and Douglas Halstead; and two sisters, Ileen Smith and Juanita Rowand; two grandchildren and a greatgrandchild.

She was born in East Liverpool May 27, 1932, a daughter of the late George and Elizabeth Clutter Owen.
She was supervisor of housekeeping at he Extended Care Center for 16 years before retiring in 1993. She was a member of the St. Clair Avenue Church of Christ.
She is survived by her husband, Robert McKinnon, whom she married Sept. 25, 1965; a daughter, Mrs. Marvin (Elaine) McCoy of East Liverpool; four brothers, Robert Owen of Wellsville, Ernest Owen of East Liverpool, Lewis Owen and George Owen; two granddaughters, Kimberly Ketchum and Amy McCoy of East Liverpool; and four great-grandchildren, Haileigh Ketchum, Hillarie Ketchum, Taylor Reed and Brock Reed of East Liverpool

She was born in Endicott, W.Va., March 16, 1930, a daughter of the late John and Pearl Pyles Riter.
She graduated from Hundred High School. She was a homemaker and a member of the New Cumberland Christian Church, where she served with the Christian Endeavor, was a Sunday School teacher and an overseer of the nursery. She enjoyed cooking and sewing.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in Death by two brothers, Ralph and Gary Riter, and a sister, Dora Bilby.
She is survived by her husband, William “Bill” Little, at home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Duska and Ronald Whiteof Endicott, W.VA., and Marsha and Jim Ford of New Cumberland; six grandchildren and their spouses, Ron and Kara White, Ronda and Mark Ralph, Jam and Michelle Ford, Tonya and Kevin Fluharty, Dawn and Tommy Malick and Jennifer and Chris Enochs; 12 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray Riter of Endicott and Leroy Riter of Middlebourne, W.Va.; and two sisters, Fonda Sapp of Baytown, Texas, and Madge Hartley of Weirton.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2001, at the New Cumberland Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home with Minister Rick Tinsky of the church officiating. Interment will follow at the New Cumberland Cemetery.

NEWELL – Thelma M. Drum, 93, of Newell passed away Monday, June 29, 2009
She was born Jan. 19, 1916, in Ohio, a daughter of the late Sherry and Margaret Smith Swift.
Thelma retired after teaching school for over 30 years with the Hancock County School System. She was a member of the Newell First Church of the Nazarene and the Hancock County Retired Teachers Association.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Drum; and two brothers, Stanley Swift and Lawrence Swift.
She is survived by a daughter, Nancy DeBee of East Liverpool; two granddaughters, Krista DeBee of East Liverpool and Alissa Butler of California; three great-grandsons, Payton, Hayden and Brice.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 on Wednesday at the Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the Newell First Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Everett Clay officiating.

EAST LIVERPOOL – Dr. J. Keith Rugh, 86, of Ohio Avenue, died at 1:35 p.m Friday, June 26, 1998 at City Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Bolivar, Pa., Aug. 7, 1911, a son of the late J. L. and Luella Snyder Rugh.
Dr. Rugh practiced medicine in Bolivar before moving to East Liverpool in 1947. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1941 to 1945 in World War II where he rose to the rank of major. He was a member of the Virginia Military Institute Class of 1933. He graduated from the Temple University Medical School in 1939 and served a surgeon residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School from 1950 to 1953. He was a board of health member from 1947 to 1992 and was a former deputy coroner for Columbiana County. He was a member of the Columbiana County Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Virginia Military Institute Alumni Association.
He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Finley Rugh of East Liverpool; two sons, Biff Rugh of Phoenixville, Pa., and Ed M. Rugh of Norman, Okla.; a sister, Libby “Hilda” Lewis of Palm Beach Garden, Fla.; and two grandchildren
He was preceded in death by a son, Ralph E. “Kim” Rugh II, who died Sept. 23, 1995; two sisters; and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The Dawson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

EAST LIVERPOOL -- Suzanne F. Rugh, 81, of Ohio Avenue, died Sunday April 11, 1999, at City Hospital after a lengthy illness.
She was born in East Liverpool Dec. 24, 1917, a daughter of the late Ralph A. and Hannah Mary Pyle Finley.
A lifelong area resident, she worked in association with her husband operating his medical practice. She was a 1936 graduate of East Liverpool High School and a 1939 graduate of West Penn Hospital School of Nursing in Pittsburgh. She served on East Liverpool City Council for nearly 20 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. J. Keith Rugh, who died in 1998 and a son, Ralph E. “Kim” Rugh.
She is survived by two sons, Biff Rugh of Phoenixville, Pa., and Ed Rugh of Norman, Okla.; two brothers, Ralph A. Finley of Scottsdale, Ariz, and John Finley of East Liverpool; and two grandchildren.
Dawson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

She retired from Homer Laughlin China Co., last working in the dipping department. She was a charter member of the Newell American Legion Post 114 Ladies Auxiliary and was a Protestant by faith.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph B. Fuller, whom she married in 1958; two daughters, Patty Greg and Shirley Franczek; two sisters, Willma Burch and Erma Baker; and two brothers, Carl and Roy McCauley.
She is survived by two grandchildren, Julie Robinson of Newell and Michael Greg of East Liverpool; and a sister, Madelon Ammell of Neosho, Mo.
Pastor Chris Arnott will conduct services at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Newell chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home. Private burial will be at Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens.

EAST LIVERPOOL – Richard F. Sakmar, R. N., of Hill Boulevard, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at home of an apparent heart attack.
He was born June 27, 1954, a son of the late Frank Sakmar and Ann Dzurnak Sakmar of Campbell, Ohio.
Mr. Sakmar spent most of his life in Champbell, Ohio, until moving to East Liverpool in 1996. He worked as a registered nurse at the Beaver Medical Center in the cardiopulmonary department. He previously had worked for 18 years at the East Liverpool City Hospital emergency room. He also had worked at Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh.
Richard was a member of the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Campbell where he was a member of the Rosary Society and the infant Jesus of Praque Guild. While in East Liverpool he attended First Church of the Nazarene, where he was a member of the Koinonia Sunday school class.
Mr. Sakmar graduated from Campbell High School in 1972 and earned his nursing degree at Youngstown State University. He enjoyed gardening and Christmas decorating.
In addition to his mother, his wife, Margaret Channels Sakmar, survives him at home, whom he married August 24, 1996. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Scott D. (Carla) Heldenbrand of Ashland, Ohio, and Marjorie Channels of East Liverpool; two sons and their wives, Michael A. and Lucia Channels of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Mark A. and Lynda Channels of Wellsville; and one sister, Mrs. Edward (Nancy) McAtee of Youngstown, Ohio. In addition, two grandchildren, Katie Channels and Megan Heldenbrand, and an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew and Marian Dzurnak of Campbell, Ohio survive.

She was born in Forty Fort, Pa., Aug. 24, 1899, a daughter of the late John and Maria Zuppa.
With her husband, she owned and operated the former Ciccarelli Grocery Store on Carolina Avenue. She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ildebrando Ciccarelli , and her son, John Ciccarelli.
She is survived by four sons, Angelo J. Ciccarelli of Chester, Harold E. Ciccarelli of Pittsburgh, Carl A. Ciccarelli of Chester and Virgil Ciccarelli of Los Angeles, Calif., a sister, Loretta Bianco of Philadelphia, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Father Rodger Hughes will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens.

He was born in East Liverpool Dec.12, 1956, a son of Samuel A.and Betty McWilliams Cataldo of Gulfport, Fla.
He was a supervisor in home construction and a Catholic.

She worked at the Riverside Knob Works, which was owned and operated by her father. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, S. Lee Donovan; and a son, John L. “Jack” Donovan.
She is survived by two sisters, Mildred Graff of New Cumberland and Mrs. Mary Earl of Alhambra, Calif.; seven granddaughters, 15 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church with Father Bernard N. Gaeta. Burial will be held in Columbiana County Memorial Park followed by a reception at the Dawson Family Center.

CHESTER –Kenneth R. Williams, 78, of Plutus Avenue, died peacefully at home Wednesday, July 18, 2001
He was born Sept. 16, 1922, in Chester, a son of the late Oscar and Virginia Lake Williams.
A lifelong resident of Chester, Kenny served as Fifth Ward councilman for 15 years, faithfully representing his many friends as well as being a city police officer during the 1960s. he retired in 1981 from the former Globe Refractories plant in Newell, where he was a supply clerk and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chester
Kenny honorably served his country during World War II in the Army where he fought with Company D Fourteenth Tank Battalion in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters, receiving a theater service medal with five Bronze Stars for his efforts.
Locally, he was a member of the Chester American Legion Post 121 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6450 and was one of the local veterans honored this spring by the United States Veterans Administration for their achievements.
He is survived at home by his loving wife, Stella, whom he married Sept. 6, 1941; a son, James R. (LaRue) Williams of Tucson, Ariz., a daughter, Mrs. James (Sandy) Dickey of East Liverpool; four sisters, Mrs. Jack (Ruby) Leak of East Liverpool, Mrs. Betty Powell of Chester, Mrs. Dewayne (Barbara) Henderson of Hookstown, Pa., and Mrs. Patty Jones of Chicago, Ill.; three granddaughters, Tina Dickey, Mrs. Joseph (Terri) Samchuck and Jessica Williams; and a great-granddaughter, Hanna Elizabeth Dickey.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil “Bunk” Williams and William Williams.
Father Rodger Hughes will conduct a Christian Mass service at 10 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church prior to burial at Locust Hill Cemetery, where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord military honors.

CALCUTTA – Mary Elizabeth Hicks of South Surry Road, died Thursday, Jul. 19, 2001, at the Calcutta Health Care Center where she had been a patient for two months.
She was born Oct. 5, 1919, a daughter of the late Raymond and Mary Elizabeth Cole Jackson. Having spent most of her life in the East Liverpool area, Mrs. Hicks retired in December a979 after serving as secretary in the mayor’s office and safety service director’ office at East Liverpool City Hall. She served and was retained under four mayoral administrations, retiring when former Mayor H. A. Tullis left office.
A lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church of East Liverpool, Mrs. Hicks had been involved in many areas of the church, which included the Crusaders Class, a teacher for children’s Sunday school, the United Methodist Women, the choir, the Esther Bible Club and as a youth Counselor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship.
Other areas of interest during her life had her serve as a Cub Scout Den Mother, A DeMolay Mother, A CPR instructor for the American Red Cross, a member of Business and Professional Women and as member of TOPS.
Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Masters; a brother lost diruing World War II, Raymond Jackson; and a step-brother, Retired Col. Karl Jackson, U.S.Army.
Survivors include her husband, Harry Hicks, whom she married May 29, 1941, at home; three sons and their wives, Rev. Gary and Kay Hicks of Bloomville, Ohio, roger and Cindy Hicks of Lakewood, Ohio, and Ray and Diana Hicks of Naples, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Sean Hicks, Erin Thomsic, Teresa Hicks, Joseph Hicks, Eric Hicks, Jenny Hicks, Monica Hurst, Apt. Aaron Hurst USMC, Tanya McGowan and Troy Hicks; two great-grandchildren, Zachary Hicks and Romana Hicks; and one sister, Thelma Hodnot of East Lliverpool.
Friends will be received at the Dawson Funeral Home on Sunday from noon to 2 and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday with Rev. Dave Maly of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery followed by a reception at the Dawson Family Center.

Services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester for Mrs. Lottie Smith Cronin, 77, of 512 5th St., Chester.
She died Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Monongalia General Hospital in Morgantown. She was visiting a daughter when she became ill. She had been failing since May.
A native of Western Ohio, she was born Nov. 9, 1895, a daughter of William Applegate and Melissa Crawford Applegate. She retired in 1946 from the Homer Laughlin China Co. She had resided in the Chester area virtually her lifetime. Her husband, Howard A. Cronin, died Oct. 10, 1947.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Florence) Haney of Chester and Mrs. Newton (Catherine) Atkinson of Osage, W. VA.; three sons, Harold A. Cronin Jr. of New Cumberland, Edward E. Cronin of East Liverpool and Hunter L Cronin of Charleston, S. C.; a sister, Mrs. Floyd Burwell , and a brother, Arthur Applegate, both of Michigan. 18 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great -great –grandchildren.
The Rev. Willard C. Billica of the Chester First Presbyterian Church will conduct the Tuesday services. Burial will be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens, Newell.

Services for Mrs. Edna VanFossen, 69, of Westfield Rd., will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Martin Funeral Home.
Mrs. VanFossen died Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, W.Va. She had been visiting relatives when she suffered an apparent stroke Friday.
Mrs. VanFossen was born in East Liverpool, Aug. 16, 1904, a daughter of Ira Wilson and Grace Saunders Wilson. She attended the Fellowship Tabernacle here. She was married to Joseph Van Fossen in 1922 at Leroy, W.Va.. He died November (97).
