Richard Wayne “Dick” Greenwood, 85, of New Cumberland passed away Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at the Weirton Medical Center.
He was born in Georgetown, a son of the late Summer J. “Sam” and Catherine L. (Brooks) Greenwood. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Albert Greenwood; a sister, Donna Weber; and a grandson, Douglas Wayne Greenwood.
Dick was retired from the Army Corp of Engineers as assistant lock master at the New Cumberland Lock and Dam #9; he was a veteran of the U. S. Army serving during World War II. He was a member of and a deacon at the New Cumberland Christian Church; past master of the New Cumberland Lodge #22 AF &AM; past high priest of Hancock Chapter #14 RAM; and past commander of the Weirton Commandary #30 Knights Templar. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, whom he married on July 30, 1948, Kathryn Faye (Haney) Greenwood of the Orchards at Foxcrest Nursing Home, Chester; his son and daughter-in-law, Rick and Susan Greenwood of New Cumberland; two sisters, Doris Loy and Husband, Denver of Benwood and Mildred Hall of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Kim Franczek and husband Joby and Dani Lightner and husband Kevin, all of New Cumberland and T. J. Greenwood and wife Ursula of Lansing, MI; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Donovan Franczek, Christian, Derek and Allison Lightner and Logan Greenwood and Justin Schmalstieg.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, May 10, 2009 at 1 p.m. at the Turley Funeral Home with Minister Rick Tinsky officiating.
Military and Masonic graveside services followed at the Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens in Newell.
