REV. M. RUDOLPH MILLER - Obituary

Rev. M. Rudolph Miller, 101

TAMPA, Fla. - Rev. M. Rudolph Miller, former minister at Trinity Presbyterian Church in East Liverpool, died Thursday, Jan. 19, 2006, at the medical center of John Knox Village in Tampa.

Born Jan. 31, 1904 in Lemoyne, Pa. to Jerome Rudolph Miller and Gertrude Fannie Moore, he died just 12 days short of his 102 birthday.

A celebration of life will be held at the John Knox Village Chapel at a time to be announced.

Rev. Miller was pastor of Trinity Presbyterian Church from April 1939 until January 1968 with a 46 month break for service as a Chaplain in the U. S. Army during World War II where he participated in the historic landing at the Normandy beaches. During his tenure as Trinity’s minister, the church built a new structure and moved from 4th street downtown to its present Maine Blvd. Location. Rev. Miller was predeceased by his wife of 72 years, Miriam Miller and his oldest son, Michael Miller. His surviving son, Stephen and his wife, the former Ruth Ann Wellington, both of East Liverpool are living in Tampa. Rev. Miller is also survived by four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Rev. Miller graduated from Yale University in 1926 and Western Theological now the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He initially came to East Liverpool area as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Newell, W. Va. In 1931. While living in East Liverpool he served as president of the Carnegie Public Library Board of Trustees, a member of the board of directors of the YMCA and Red Cross, as director of the East Liverpool Child Counseling Center and the Retarded Children’s Group, as director of the Civic Music Association, a trustee of the Osteopathic Hospital and Kiwanis Club. He also served as Moderator of Wheeling Kittanning and Steubenville Presbyteries. He served 28 years in the U. S. Army guard and reserves on both active and reserve duty retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. The family requests that memorials take the form of donations to the Trinity Presbyterian Church, East Liverpool, Ohio music fund.

RUTH ESTHER SHILLING - Obituary

Ruth Esther Allen Shilling, 84

CHESTER – Ruth Esther Allen Shilling, 84, died at 1:20 a.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003 at East Liverpool City Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Chester, May 10, 1919, a daughter of the late Joseph E. and Daisy M. Powell Allen, she was a 1937 graduate of Chester High School and did undergraduate work at Mount Union College and received her degree from West Virginia university, where hs later earned her Master’s Degree Plus 40.

A lifelong member of the Chester First United Methodist Church, she was active with its Council Ministries, choir and building committee. She also was a past chairman of the administrative board.

A lifelong resident of the area, she taught for 42 and a half years in the Hancock County School System, more than 30 0f which she taught English, journalism and printing at Oak Glen High School, where she also served as the Junior Class adviser. She also was active as prom adviser, assisted with baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies and organized printed programs for sporting events, plays and other special activities.

A past president of delta Kappa Gamma Teachers Sorority, she was a member of Eastern Star for more than 60 years and also served a Past Matron.

Additionally, she was a volunteer for the Blackhawk School District and former chairperson of the United Way.

Her husband, David Robert “Bob” Shilling, whom she married Dec. 21, 1947, survives at home.

A daughter, Mrs. Craig (Cynthia J.) Smith of Beaver Falls and two sons, David A. Shilling and his wife, Luanne, of Chester and R. Joseph Shilling and his wife, Bonnie, of Waverly, Ohio, survive.

Five Grandchildren, Matthew, Richard and his wife Penny, Bryanne, and Catlin Shilling and Christopher Smith, also survive.

A brother, Paul E. Allen, preceded her in death.

Friends may call today at the Dawson Funeral Home from 6 to8 p.m. and on Friday when the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. where an Eastern Star Service will be held at 7 p.m.

The Rev. Charles Andrews will conduct services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

EAST LIVERPOOL -- Edna E. Clouse of Gaston Place, died Tuesday, Dec. 19. 1995, at home following a brief illness.

She was born in Chillicothe, Ohio, a daughter of the late Ernest E. and Belle Bucher Clouse.

A lifelong resident of East Liverpool, she was employed 44 years as a teacher of history and social studies by the East Liverpool School System before retiring in 1973. She graduated from East Liverpool High School and Ohio State University, with advanced studies at Duke University and the University of Pittsburgh. She was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority, East Liverpool Teachers Association, the Ohio Teachers Association and the First united Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Isabel Clouse, May 18, 1971; and a brother Raymond E. Clouse, Sept. 30, 1983.

The Rev. Dr. Robert Buckley of the church will conduct services at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

BERTRAM A. DAWSON - Obituary

Services Slated For Ex-Treasurer

Services will be held Saturday for Bertram A. Dawson, 72, of 1879 Lisbon St., a former educator and treasurer for the City of East Liverpool.

Mr. Dawson was pronounced dead on arrival at City Hospital Wednesday at 8:12 p.m. after suffering an apparent heart attack at home.

A lifelong resident, Mr. Dawson was born here Sept. 2, 1905, a son of Avery Graham Dawson and Jennie M. Johnston Dawson.

He was appointed treasurer in August 1943 and retired last December, not choosing to seek a new term.
City Hall flags were lowered to half staff today out of respect for Mr. Dawson.

A graduate of Kenyon College in 1930, Mr. Dawson received his master’s degree in education form the University of Pittsburgh and attended Geneva College.

He began teaching in the East Liverpool School District in 1933 at the old Central building, served as principal at the former Pleasant Heights School before moving to the high school, where he served as dean of boys until he was retired in 1971 after 25 years’ service.

Mr. Dawson was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Masonic Riddle Lodge, Elks Lodge 258, The Old Timer’s Baseball Organization and the Republican Party.

In addition to his widow, Mrs. Ruby E. Wickline Dawson at home survivors include a son, Bert A. Dawson Jr. of Myler Park, Columbiana County Engineer, a brother, Claud H. Dawson of Parkersburg, W.Va., and two grandchildren.

The rites will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Donald R. Shank officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dawson Funeral Home here Friday afternoon and night and Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Elizabeth Hist, 91, Retired Teacher

TUCKER, Ga. -- Elizabeth B. Hist, 91, of Jennings Avenue, East Liverpool, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 1989, at the Northlake Regional Center in Tucker, Ga., where she had resided since May 1.

She was born in East Liverpool Oct. 16, 1897, a daughter of the late James Bloor and Annie Dennis Bloor.

A retired teacher in the East Liverpool school system, Mrs. Hist was a member of the St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, its Circle Four and the National Retired Teachers Association.

She graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1915, attended Kent State University, and later graduated from Geneva College.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Edwin (Dorothy) Broadbent of East Liverpool and Frances McCall of Stone Mountain, Ga.; and five grandchildren.

The Rev. George P. Donehoo is to conduct services at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial is to be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Dawson Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Organ Fund at the church or the ELHS Alumni Association Clock Tower Project.

Ruth T. Winland
Mrs. Ruth T. Winland, 62, of 715 Park Blvd., died today at 5:50 a.m. in Northside Hospital,Youngstown where she had been ill for three years.

A lifelong resident of the area, Mrs. Winland was born in Wellsville May 24, 1914, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry C. Taggart. She was a teacher in the Wellsville city school system for three years.

She was a former chairman of the City Hospital School of Nursing and was a member of the Women’s Association of the Fonderlac Country Club of Youngstown, the Monday Literary Club, an associate member of the East Liverpool Women’s Club and a member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Winland was graduated from Wellsville High School and Kent State University.

In addition to her husband, Fred Winland whom she married June 18, 1938, survivors include a daughter, Miss Jane E. Winland of New York, N. Y.

Services will be held Monday at Riverview Chapel by the Rev. Ronald Loper. Burial will follow.

EAST LIVERPOOL -- Ruth E. Winland, 86, of Elysian Way died at 5:5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 1996, at the Rochester Manor in Rochester, Pa., following a brief illness.

She was born in East Liverpool Feb. 28, 1910, a daughter of the late Fred and Adda McFadden Winland.

A livelong resident of the area, she was employed as a home economics teacher 37 years with the East Liverpool School System, before retiring in 1970. She graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1927 and attended the Carnegie Mellon University for one year and later transferred to the Ohio State University where she earned her degree. She was member of the East Liverpool High School Alumni Association, the Ohio State University Alumni Association, a charter member of the East Liverpool Woman’s Club, a past volunteer of the East Liverpool City Hospital Auxiliary and a member of the Emmanuel Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen W. Winland, and two brothers, Fred Winland and Kenneth Winland.

She is survived by a niece, Jane Winland Foresta of New York, N. Y.

The Rev. Tanta Luckhardt-Hendricks will conduct services at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery.

The Dawson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Lillie E. Simmons, 91, formerly of Arner Rd., Newell, died Thursday, at 1 p.m. in Ohio Valley Hospital, Steubenville, following a brief illness. Mrs. Simmons was born July 15, 1884, in Tyler County, WV. She retired from the Homer Laughlin China Co. in 1960 and had been the oldest member of the First Church of the Nazarene. Her husband, James Hugh Simmons, died May, 1938. Survivors include two sons, Hughie Simmons and Ray R. Simmons, both of Newell; two daughtrers, Mars Rade (Opal) Sadler of Los Angeles and Mrs. Hiram (Garnet) Dunn of Mingo Junction, with whom she resided; a brother, the Rev. Clarence Brewer of Middlebourne, WV; 24 grandchildren, 74 great-grnadchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Mrs. Sarah Ellen Brewer, 83, died Sunday at 8 p.m. in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Homer Rice, 1014 Avondale St., following a long illness. A native of Pleasant County, WV, Mrs. Brewer came to East Liverpool about 23 years ago from Rush Run. She was a member of the Chester Church of the Nazarene. She leaves another daughter, Mrs. Lillie Simmons of Newell; three sons, Ira Brewer of Long Beach, WV, Clarence Brewer of Wick, WV, and Thomas Brewer of Chester; three brothers, John Birkhimer of Mingo Junction, Alonzo Birkhimer of Salem, and Edward Birkhimer of East Liverpool; two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Lamp of Sebring and Mrs. Rose Lamp of East Liverpool and 26 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren. She was the widow of Martin Luther Brewer. Rites will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Martin Funeral Home by Rev. O. L. Benedum, district superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene, and the Rev. E. W. Martin, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene. Burial will be in Locust Hill Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday afternoon or night at the funeral home.

SARA M. ERVIN - Obituary

Mrs. Sara M. Ervin, 75, of Dayton, former resident of East Liverpool, died Wednesday morning at the Sienna Hospital in Dayton after a long illness.

Mrs. Ervin left East Liverpool in 1961. She was formerly employed at Homer Laughlin China Co. Her husband, Carl F. Ervin, died Sept. 8, 1964. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Dayton.

She is survived by a son, Bernard E. Ervin, with whom she resided; two step-daughters, Mrs. Same (Mable) Bryan and Mrs. Charles (Jane) Kology, both of Chester and five grandchildren.

Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Aloysious Catholic Church here. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may call at the East Liverpool Arner Home for Funerals Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home Friday at 8 p.m.

JAMES BAILEY - Obituary

James Bailey, 57, formerly of 1010 Commerce St., Wellsville, and a World War II veteran, died Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. at the Oakland Veterans Administration Hospital in Pittsburgh where he had been a patient for several months.

Mr. Bailey was born in Seattle, wash., Sept 3, 1914, a son of Homer and Vivian Coleman Bailey. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge 772 and the VFW Post, both of Wellsville.

He is survived by two brothers, Arlan Bailey of Wellsville, Alex Bailey of Mingo Junction, five sisters, Mrs. Attilio (Bessie) Carosiello and Mrs. Richard (Sara) Hickman, both of Wellsville, Mrs. Ray (Marie) Dunham of Parkersburg, W. VA., Mrs. Frank (Jeanette) Takatch of Rayland, Ohio, and Mrs. Beatrice Hann of Lisbon, and several nephews and nieces.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the MacLean Funeral Home in Wellsville by the Rev. Guy T. Butera of the First United Methodist Church in Wellsville. Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery in Wellsville.

LINDA K. SIX - Obituary

CALCUTTA – Linda K. Six, 53, of Dale Street, died at 10:35 a.m. Sunday, May 19, 2002, at East Liverpool City Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Born in Chester, Oct. 26, 1948, the daughter of Velma Coleman Carroll of Calcutta and the late Norman Carroll, she was a member of the Longs Run Presbyterian Church.

A longtime supporter and fan of the Beaver Local Athletics, she was a member of the Beaver Local Booster Club as well as the Calcutta Lions Club. She also volunteered with the Bill Booth Football League and was an active follower of the Calcutta Bulldogs team. She worked at the Dairy Mart Convenient Store in Calcutta and Columbiana for nine years.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Danny J. Six, at home. The couple married Nov. 20, 1980. Two daughters survive, Mrs. Robert (Christiana) McCarty of Lisbon and Deirdre Drane of Denver, Pa., along with a son, Robert Drane and his wife, Veronna of Mansfield. There are also two stepdaughters, Mrs. Jerry (Deanna) Patterson of Waynesburg, Ohio, and Mrs. James (Kathie) Andrick of Columbus, and a stepson, Charles Six of Toms River, N. J.

In addition four sisters survive, Mrs. Keith (Marilyn) Matheny of Lyman, S. C., Jackie Carroll of Gray Court, S. C., Mrs. Rusty (Jannie) Smith of Calcutta and Mrs. Tom (Michelle) Crouse of Harrisburg, Pa., along with three brothers. N. Larry Carroll and his wife Jane of Geer, S. C., Marvin Carroll and his wife Marci of Lisbon and Kevin Carroll and his wife April of Calcutta. In addition there are five grandchildren, Coleman Drane, Andrew McCarty, Rerily Drane, Dillon Drane and Lauren McCarty, along with five step grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Dawson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Longs Run Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Caster and Rev. Tanta Luckhardt Hendricks officiating. Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

Friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship following the service.

MARGARET CURTIS - Obituary

Mrs. Margaret Elizabeth Curtis, 74, of Route 39, Wellsville, died Monday at 5:55 a.m. at the Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville following a three week illness.

She was born in East Liverpool April 17, 1913, a daughter of the late Eric Durock Coleman and Susanna Moore Coleman.

Mrs. Curtis was a burnisher for 30 years at the Sterling China Co. before retiring in 1975 and was a member of the Christian Life Fellowship Church.

Her husband, Clarence Joseph Curtis Sr., died Dec. 24, 1968.

Survivors include, three sons, Clarence J. Curtis and Robert L. Curtis of Wellsville and William J Curtis of Guilford Lake, two daughters, Mrs. George (Shirley Ann) Donaldson of Wellsville and Linda K. Curtis of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services are planned Thursday at 11 a.m. at the MacLean Funeral Home.

Burial is to be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.

NANCY BRERETON KLEIN - Obituary

EAST LIVERPOOL – Nancy Brereton Klein, 64, of Wyoming Avenue, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at East Liverpool City Hospital following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Born in East Liverpool, June 15, 1941, daughter of the late Charles “Denver” and Vera Coleman Brereton, she was a 1959 graduate of East Liverpool High School and a 1960 graduate of Ohio Valley Business College.

A lifetime resident of East Liverpool she retired from the Columbiana County Sheltered Workshops. She had worked with Bill Booth Little League Football and was a member of the Calcutta Lions Club and the Glenmoor American Auxiliary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Keith Klein, Sr., and a son Joseph Keith Klein, Jr.

Three daughters, Mrs. Betsy Klein Hull and her husband, Rodney, Mrs. Kathy Klein Vunjak and her husband, Wesley, and Mrs. Jennifer Klein Bielskis and her husband, John; and a son, Daniel B. Klein and his wife, Melissa A., all of East Liverpool, survive.

She is also survived by a close companion, Kenneth Unger of Chester, and three sisters, Nanette Pridemore and her husband Philip of East Liverpool, Joanne Smith and her husband Donald of Canandaigua, N.Y., and Betsy Chaney and her husband James of Toronto; a brother, Charles Denver Brereton, Jr. and his wife Karen of East Liverpool also survive.

There are nine grandchildren; Logan Deems, Michael and Audrey Vunjak, Chase Connor, Carly, Derek, and Owen Klein, and Alex Bielskis.

Friends may call Monday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.

John Smith will conduct services at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery following which friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center.

HARRY STONE - Obituary

WELLSVILLE – Harry C. “Jack” Stone, 64, of 1050 Township Line Road, died Monday at 10:27 p.m. in East Liverpool City Hospital, where he had been a patient a week.

A lifelong area resident, Mr. Stone was born here March 28, 1918, a son of Paul F. Stone and Emma Anderson Stone.

He worked some 30 years in various local potteries and retired as operator of the Stone Vending Co. in April.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge 1040 and the IBPAW.

Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Coleman Stone at home, survivors include two daughters, Miss Sally Stone of Mansfield and Mrs. Michael (Jackie Lynn) Sabbato of Guilford Lake, a son, Jeffrey K. Stone of Eugene, Ore.; three brothers, Paul A. Stone of Huston, Texas; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Regina) Dennis of Breksville, and two grandchildren.

Services are to be held Friday at 1 p.m. at the MacLean Funeral Home by the Rev. Oommen K. Thomas of the Yellow Creek United Presbyterian Church, assisted by Fr. Donald McIlvane.

Friends may call Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon and night at the funeral home, where an Elks service is to be held Thursday at 8 p.m..

Burial is to be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Burial rites were conducted for Alex Bailey, 36, a native of East Liverpool, at Highland Cemetery, Follansbee, W. Va.

Mr. Bailey died in a Veterans Hospital Aug ( Couldn’t read day).

He was the son of Homer and Vivian Bailey.

He served in Europe during World War II.

Survivors include a brother, Arlen Bailey of Wellsville, and five sisters, Mrs. Sara Hickman and Mrs. Bessie Carosiello of Wellsville, Mrs. Marie Dunham of Parkersburg, W. Va., Mrs. Jeannette Takatch of Smithfield and Mrs. Beatrice Chamberlain of Lisbon.

TONI LYN TICE NETHERCUTT - Obituary

EAST LIVERPOOL - Toni Lyn Tice Nethercutt, 28, died Tuesday June 20, 2000.

A former manager of the Bojangles in Morehead City, she was working as the manager of the Bojangles in James City.

She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Richard and Carolyn Kidder of the home; her father Finley J. Tice of East Liverpool; a daughter, Brittany Sue Tice of the home; a son, Robert “Bobby” Nethercutt, Jr. of the home; a sister, Tina Reynolds of East Liverpool; and two brothers, Richard Kidder Jr. and Carl Kidder both of the home.

The Rev. Eric N. Lindblade Jr., will conduct services at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Havelock. Friends may call at the Munden Funeral home and Crematory in Morehead City, N. C. from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
