George Cuic, 83, of New Manchester passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2009.
He was born March 28, 1925 in Weirton, a son of the late Sava “Sam” and Amelia (Stojakovich) Cuic. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Pete Cuic; six sisters, Mildred Albino, Ann Simich, Mary Tarovisky, Lyla Dawson, Daisy Lorello and Lilly Miller; and a daughter-in-law, Caarol Cuic.
He served in the United States Navy upon the USS Carrier Ommaney Bay in WWII. George was on the carrier January 4, 1945 as a gunners mate when it was hit by enemy fire and sunk in the Sulu Sea. He was rescued but 93 of his crew mates perished. He retired form the Weirton Division of National Steel. He was a member of the Weriton Steel 25 Year Club and the National Rifle Association.
George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marlene (Furbee) Cuic; three sons, George A. and Daniel (Brenda) Cuic of New Manchester, David (Donna) Cuic of Thonotosassa, FL; a brother, Milo Cuic of Follansbee; five grandchildren, Christopher Cuic and fiancée Amanda Ream, Nicole Wooding, AnthonyCuic, Chad Cuic, and Daniel Jr. (Vicki) Cuic; six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Kobe, Skylar, Bear, Ethan and Noah; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at the New Cumberland Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home with Rev. Ethel Dunaway officiating. Interment followed at the New Cumberland Cemetery.
