Phyllis H. Trotter
AUSTIN, Texas – Phyllis H. Trotter, 94, of the Gracy Woods Nursing Center, formerly of Calcutta, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004, in Austin following a lengthy illness.
Born in Gallia County, Ohio, Dec. 11, 1909, daughter of the late Chester and Sadie Coleman Howard, she was a member of the Cadmus High School Class of 1927 and attended Rio Grande College.
A member of the Calcutta United Presbyterian Church and its Women’s Missionary Society, she came to Columbiana County in 1928.
A teacher for the Beaver Local School District for 30 years until retiring in 1972, she also had taught in several one-room schoolhouses.
A member of the Columbiana historical Society, she also was a charter member of the Columbiana County School Credit Union.
Her husband, James Trotter, whom she married May 13, 1931, died in 1987. Three sisters, Aldeth White, Clarice Null and Ruth Johnson, and three brothers, Leland Howard, Robert Howard and Merrill Howard, also preceded her in death.
A daughter, Cathey Kostetsky and her husband, Nicholas, of Austin, and a son, James H. Trotter and his wife, Norma, of Smithville, Ohio survive.
Two sisters, Gertrude Slagle of Oak Hill, Ohio, and Marcella Long of Kentucky, also survive, along with a brother, Emerson Howard and his wife, Irene of Toledo.
There are four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Monday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present form 6 to 8 p.m. as well as on Tuesday one hour before the 11 a.m. service. Pastor Mark Unrue of the First Presbyterian Church of Urichsville will officiate.
Burial will be in Longs Run Cemetery.
