WILLOUGHBY, Ohio – Nell Rose Chapman Riel, 95, died on the morning of Aug, 12, 2008, in Willoughby, where she had resided since 1946.
Born in East Liverpool on May 26, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Rev. D. Park and Virginia Snyder Chapman. She was also preceded by her husband of 56 years, Clifford J. Riel, who died in 2003.
A 1930 graduate of East Liverpool High School, she was also graduated from Bethany College in 1934, and was a member of the Alpha Iota sorority . She later received her Masters in Education from the University of Pittsburgh.
She taught seventh and eighth grade English from 1934 to 1946 at the Garfield Junior High in East Liverpool. From 1958 to 1970, she and her husband were the resident managers of the University School dorms on the Shaker Heights campus.
Her father, the Rev. D. Park Chapman, had been the pastor of the First Church of Christ Disciples in East Liverpool from 1934 to 1951. Nell was a past member of the Heights Christian Church of Shaker Heights, and of the Euclid Avenue Christian Church of Cleveland Heights.
The Rev. Wayne Standley will conduct a committal service in the Chapel of Riverview Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008. There will also be a memorial service in the Lyons Chapel of Breckenridge Retirement Community in Willoughby, Ohio, on Friday Aug. 15, 2008, at 4 p.m.
