Dennis S. Smith, 64, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2011, at Valley Hospice care Center North, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Newell December I, 1946, he was the son of the late Clyde L. and Vaughn D. Smith.
Denny was a lifetime resident of the area, graduating form the first class from Oak Glen High School in 1964. Te retired in 2002 as a caster operator at the BOP of the former Weirton Steel and was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chester where he served as a trustee.
Stationed near the DMZ during the Vietnam War, he served in the US Army and was a member of both VFW Post #6450 and American Legion Post #121, where he had served as Commander and with the Sons of the Legion group.
Surviving at home is wife of 28 years, Rosemary; her Mother Vera “Grandma” Miller, of Chester; four daughters, Stephanie Smith (Kevin) Strasser, of Pittsburgh, Stacey Smith, of Hershey, Kassy Kelley (Greg) Hewitt, of Fayetteville, WV and Randi Smith of Morgantown; eight grandchildren, Kendall Green, Denni Marie Strasser, Will and & Kelan Swan and Alex, Anna, Sam and Coralea Hewitt.
Rev. Trina Lewis conducted funeral services at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 22, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Chester.
Burial followed in Locust Hill Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group and WV National Guard detail.
Arner Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
