ROSE ZIPPERAN - Obituary

POLAND – Mrs. Rose R. Zipperan, 68, of 305 S. Main St. died Sunday at 1:50 a.m. at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Mrs. Zipperan was born Oct. 20, 1910, in New York City, a daughter of Alfonso Molli and Christina Rosemangna Molli.

She moved here from Wellsville.

Mrs. Zipperan was retied in 1978 as a teacher, having taught from 1944-54 in the East Liverpool School District.

She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Joseph DeBaise of Boulder, Colo., and Mrs. Michael Geary of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Patrick Molli of Columbus and Louis Molli of Washington D.C.; a sister, Mrs. Joseph Phillips of Kokomo, Ind., and two grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. from the Holy Family Church.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2 too 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Cunningham Funeral Home here where another service will be conducted Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.

Dominic F. Amedeo, 79

EAST LIVERPOOL – Dominic F. Amedeo, 79, of Homestead Drive died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1996, at home following a brief illness.

He was born in Chester Nov. 17, 1916, a son of the late Matteo and Philominia Letteri Amedeo. A lifelong resident of the Tri-State Area, he was a consultant for the state department of education, division of school finance, in the school management assistance section from March 1976 until his resignation in October 1996.

He was superintendent of East Liverpool schools from 1970-76, and was assistant superintendent from 1969-70. Earlier, he was a member of and chairman of the board of directors of Kent State-East Liverpool from 1968-69. He was principal at East Liverpool High School from 1968-69, Weir High School in Weirton from 1965-68 and Wells Junior High School in Newell from 1963-65. He was a teacher at Chester High School from 1947 to 1963, and served 16 years as coach of football, basketball and baseball.

He was the recipient of a Pacemaker Award, a national award, in 1967.
He served with the U. S. Army during World War II.

He graduated from Chester High School in 1936, and earned his bachelor’s degree in education at Kent State University in 1947. He earned his master’s degree at Kent State University in 1951. In the 1960’s he took postgraduate study at Kent State University, the University of Pittsburgh and West Virginia University.

A member and past president of the East Liverpool Rotary Club, he was a member of the St. Ann Catholic Church, American Association of School Administrators, Buckeye Association of School Administrators and the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine “Jay” Damanti Amedeo, whom he married May 5, 1943; a son, Mathew Amedeo of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Charles (Janet) Carter of Chester; a brother Anthony Amedeo of Chester; two sisters, Mrs. Maurice (Mary) Pasculle of Pittsburgh and Rose Rinaldi of Lincoln Park, Mich; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl Amedeo and Frank Amedeo; a sister, Nora Petyak.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church with Rev. George Balasko as celebrant. The Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord military honors graveside at Locust Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Arner Funeral Chapel from 7 to 9 tonight and form 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. A Wake service will be held at 2.

MARY IDA HIGHFIELD - Obituary

Mary Ida Highfield, 92

CHESTER -- Mary Ida Highfield, 92, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at the Weirton Medical Center following a brief illness.

A daughter of the late Clarence Merle and Ida Mary Smeltz Highfield, she was born in East Liverpool on March 24, 1912.

Mary was a lifetime resident of this area having graduated from the former Wells High School in Newell and West Liberty State College. She began her 38-year teaching career in the one-room Allison School House and retired in 1971 from the now closed Jefferson Elementary School in Newell.

A devout Catholic, Mary attended Sacred Heart Church in Chester where she taught catechism, was a member of the Parish Council, the building committee and was an active member of the Ladies Guild. Mary’s calling in life was to care for and visit the sick.

She was also a member of the Chester Asbury Farm Women and Hancock County Retired Teachers Association.

Mary was the last living member of her family having been preceded in death by her five brothers, Paul, Merle, Irvin, William, and Dale. Edgar Allison, a lifelong friend, also preceded her in death along with a nephew and a niece, Bill and Bonnie Highfield and Clarence Wollam, nephew by marriage.

Survivors include Mary Jane Wollam, who was raised by the Highfield family and was considered by Mary as a sister instead of a niece. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs. Dale (Jean) Highfield and numerous nieces and nephews including Michael (Karen) Highfield, Patricia (Joe) Trubiano, Cathy (Bob) Glass, Terry (Debbie) Highfield,
Barry (Cherie) Highfield, Scott (Karen) Highfield, Ann (Dale) Berger, Joe (Florence) Highfield, Teresa Highfield, Dimoff, Sandy (Keith) Pattison and Tom (Vanessa) Highfield. Also surviving are 27 great-nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Turley Funeral Home in New Cumberland on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Rosary will be recited by her family at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. A Wake Service will be conducted at 8 p.m. by the Rev. Lino Ebejer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church in Chester on Wednesday at 10 a.m. by Father Ebejer. Burial will follow at the Locust Hill Cemetery in Chester.

RICHARD D. BRENNEMAN - Obituary

Richard Diamond Brenneman

MORGANTOWN, W. Va., -- Richard Diamond Brennaman, 89, died of natural causes Sunday, May 12, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.

He was born Nov. 30, 1912, in Buffalo, N. Y., son of Charles Melchor and Ollie Diamond Brenneman.

In 1995 Richard was preceded in death by Garnet, his beloved wife of 56 years.

At the age of 8, along with his parents and brother Charles, he moved to the family apple farm at Brownsdale, near New Cumberland. The farm was to become his most treasured place on earth. His father died when he was 14. Richard was forced to assume responsibilities beyond his years and developed a deep appreciation of hard work and strong moral values. Honesty, compassion, and an enduring desire for knowledge characterized his life.

Enlisting in the U. S. Navy in 1944, he served as a radar technician aboard the USS Roulette in the Pacific Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at the conclusion of World War II.

He attended the old one room Elwood School in Hancock County, Wells High School in Newell and graduated from Upper Darby High School near Philadelphia, Pa. Richard studied electronics in the U. S. Navy and later completed correspondence courses in electronics and obtained his teaching certificate through classes at the University of Pittsburgh, Marshall University and Fairmont State College.

Richard taught electronics technology for seven years at Weir High School. Prior to that, he was employed 31 years at Weirton Steel Corp., working first in Quality Control and later in the Electronics Department.

As an active member of the Newell Lions Club, he was awarded a life membership in the International Association of Lions Clubs. He was active in 4-H programs including leading nature walks, helping to establish Camp Aura, and working with the All-Stars. Richard was a member of the Weirton Steel 25-year Club. He was also active with the Hancock County Retired School Employees and the Hancock County Senior Citizens. Richard was a member of Nessly Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Carolyn B. Keech of Morgantown, son and daughter-in-law Richard C. and Diane Brenneman of Plainfield, Ill., and son John W. Brenneman of New Cumberland; sister-in-law, Helen P. Brenneman of Belleair, Fla.; grandchildren, David and his wife Mary Keech of Kingwood, Randy Keech of Pittsburgh, Pa., Pamela and her husband Tim Troje of Rosemont, Minn., Wendy Brenneman and Barbara Brenneman of Egan, Minn.; great-granddaughters Madelynn Engel and Laren Keech; and numerous nieces and nephews.

AT his request, Richard’s body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University. A memorial service honoring Richard’s life will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 22, 2002, at Nessly Chapel Untied Methodist Church in New Cumberland.

Clyde Allison Geer, 77

NEW CUMBERLAND -- Clyde Allison Geer, 77, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003.

He was born June 8, 1926, in New Cumberland, a son of the late Paul O. and Cecil Keeper Geer.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired as an auto body teacher for both Oak Glen High School and the Vo-Tech Center for Hancock County Schools. He was owner of Geer’s Autobody and a member of the Chester V.F.W. and the American Legion of Chester. He was Protestant by faith.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Mehaffey Geer.

He is survived by his three sons, Roscoe “Butch” Geer and his wife, Thelma of New Cumberland, Kenneth Geer and his wife, Marsha of Austintown, and Clyde “Sonny” Geer of East Liverpool; two daughters, Connie Clark and her husband, Richard of New Cumberland, Peggy Patterson and her husband, Richard of Chester; eight grandchildren, Russell Geer, Susan Geer Kindler, Megan Wycoff, Adam Geer, Ashley Geer, Ashley Clark, Amanda Clark, and Steven Mehaffey; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby Talbot of Murrysville, Ohio, Martha Streets and Mabel Mink of Chester.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the Newell Chapel of the Nixon Funeral Home with Pastor John Mehaffey officiating. Interment will follow at Locust Hill Cemetery where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will accord military services.

Calling hours will be held Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

SARAH LOU MILLER - Obituary

Sarah Lou Miller, 74

CHESTER -- Sarah Lou Miller, 74, of Florida Avenue died at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept, 23, 1994, at the Roslyn Rehab Center of Glenside, Pa., following a brief illness.

She was born March 20, 1920, in Clinton, W. Va., a daughter of the lade D. C. And Anna DeVaughn Grewell.

She lived in Chester since 1937 and was a school teacher in Hancock County Schools before retiring in 1976. she graduated from Chester High School and West Liberty Teachers College. She did graduate work at University of Pittsburgh. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Chester Arts Club and West Virginia Retired Teachers Association.

Her husband, Standish L. “Red” Miller, whom she married Dec. 20, 1947, died March 22, 1992.

She is survived by two sons, Mark Miller of Glenside and Richard Miller of Columbus, Ga.; two brothers, Jack Grewell of Winder, Ga., and Charles Grewell of Amarillo, Texas; and four grandchildren.

The Rev. James Dumire will conduct services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Prall Cemetery at West Liberty.

Friends may call at the Arner Funeral Chapel Tuesday afternoon and evening and tat the church an hour before the services.

The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Lynn Murray Memorial Library or to the church.

BERTHA H. MAUK - Obituary

Bertha H. Mauk, 88

EAST LIVERPOOL -- Bertha H. Mauk, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2003, at Nentwick Convalescent Home.

She was born Nov. 24, 1914, a daughter of the late Amos and Cora Taylor Errett.

Mrs. Mauk retied as a teacher from the Hancock County School System. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and was Christian by faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry F. Mauk, and a brother, Davie Errett.

Surviving is a son, Sam Mauk and his wife, Barbara of Wintersville, Ohio; a sister, Lois Poorman of Fort Myers, Fla.; and granddaughters, Regan Mauk and Hilary Steinmiller.

The Rev. Debra Dague of the First Methodist Church of Chester will conduct the services Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may visit Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.
