NEWELL – Sarah Ellen Mercer, 87, of Grant Street, died at 2 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at East Liverpool City Hospital, where she was a patient for two months.
Born in Carrollton, Ohio, Aug. 2, 1915, daughter of the late Joshua and Lucille Hilliard Chadwick, she was a member of the Grace Baptist Temple and attended Sunday School Class and the Jolly Sixties. She also was a member of the Glendale Church of the Nazarene, where she volunteered with mission work, taught vacation Bible school and was active with the bus ministry and the prayer chain. She also was a member of the True Blue Sunday School Class and the Joy Class.
A lifelong resident of the area, she worked at McCroy’s 5 & 10, as well as at the Homer Laughlin China Co.
Her first husband, Lawrence E. McCune, died July 11, 1942. Harry T. Wooley, her second husband also preceded her in death. Robert E. Mercer, her third husband whom she married Aug. 1, 1953, died May 17, 1993. A brother Edward T. Chadwick, and a grandson, Randy Allen Taylor, also preceded her in death.
Three daughters, Mrs. Leroy (Delores) Riddle and Mrs. Harold (Judy) Taylor, both of Newell, and Mrs. Larry (Donna) Griffin of Calcutta, survive along with two sons, Lawrence Ronald McCune and his wife, Patricia, of East Liverpool and Jerry H. McCuen and his wife, Sandy, of Winder, Ga.
There are 16 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Thursday at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
The Rev. Gaylord Cox of the Grace Baptist Temple will conduct services at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Shadow Lawn Memory Gardens.
