MIDLAND – Leslie Benjamin Roach, 92, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001.
He was born in his grandparents’ home, a log cabin in Axton, Va., Feb. 8, 1909.
Leslie started barbering in 1927 and moved his family to Midland in 1929. Les was a barber for 70 years, retiring in 1997. During this time, he was very active in his community. He served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Lions Club. He also was a member of the IOOF Lodge and the Elks Lodge Woodsmen of the World. He served on the Midland School Board for 32 years and was a tax collector for the Borough of Midland for four years. He also was very active in the Democratic Party, serving as Co-chairman as well as borough chairman. He served on the board of the Midland Water Authority.
Les, was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Rush Roach and Mary Sue Haley Roach; his beloved wife of 67 years, Thelma Widener Roach in 1995; a daughter, Margaret, who died as an infant; a brother, Henry; and a sister Laura Cochran.
He is survived by his daughters, Eileen Lindsay of Lorain, Ohio, and Kathy Hirsch of Solvang, Calif.; a son, James L. of Honeoye Falls, N. Y.; 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the D. L. Williams Funeral Home, 848 Midland Ave. The services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Midland. Entombment will follow in Beaver Mausoleum
