Fern Speer Cowsert
Died Jan. 3, 2004

COLUMBIANA – Fern Speer Cowsert, 83, formerly of New Springfield, Ohio, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at St. Mary’s Alzheimer Center in Columbiana following a brief illness.
Born in Mount Pleasant, Pa., June 9, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Ewing Hess Speer and Edna Fox Speer.
A member of the Oakland Free Methodist Church, she was involved in many areas of the church, including the church choir, and had served as a church steward, taught in the Primary Department Sunday School, and had also been president of the Women’s Missionary Society. In addition, she enjoyed being a part of the church bowling league. She had been a nurses’ aid with the Visiting Nurses Association in East Liverpool prior to moving to New Springfield in 1991.
Her husband, Joseph P. Cowsert, whom she married Nov. 28, 1940, preceded her in death April 17, 2003.
Survivors include her two daughters, Louise Cowsert of Hanoverton and Dianne Cowsert of Lisbon, as well as a son, Robert Cowsert and his wife Naomi of Calcutta. There are two grandchildren, Mrs. Robert (Beth) Wells of Jacksonville, Fla., and Brad Cowsert and his wife Christina of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, as well as two great-grandchildren, Christopher and Brandon Wells of Jacksonville.
A brother, Elmer Speer of RuffsDale, Pa., also survives.
Mrs. Cowsert was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Korn, Ruth Galley and Edna Huffnagle, as well as two brothers, Robert Speer and David Speer.
Friends may call today at the Dawson Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Pastor Mike Kramer of Oakland Free Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
