LISBON – Services will be held today for Mrs. Phoebe Sonntag Shaffer, 84, of Glasgow Road, formerly of East Liverpool, who died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at home.
She was born in New Castle, Pa., Feb 5, 1917, a daughter of the late Adam and Laura sonnet Sonntag.
She lived most of her life in the area. She was employed by the former A & P Grocery Store in the produce department and as a cashier. She also was employed by the East Liverpool School System in the cafeteria.
She was a member of the First Church of Christ (Disciples), East Liverpool, Sigma Alpha Class and a deaconess of the church. She was a member of former president of the Ladies League Quilters and Yellow Creek Grange. She also was a member of several area card clubs and a member of the former Progressive Mothers Club.
Her husband, Wilbur J. Shaffer, whom she married, Sept. 1, 1934, died March 1, 1991. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Beltz; a brother, Walter Sonntag; and a great-grandson, Rusty Ray Marker.
She is survived by three daughters, Shirley Marker of East Liverpool, Mrs. Roy (Sally) Weymouth of Bailey Island, Maine, and Mrs. W.W. “Skip” (Susan) Hall of Silver Lake, Ohio; a son, Alan R. Shaffer and wife Debby with whom she lived; a sister, Louella Kyle of Mercer, Pa.; a brother, Russell Sonntag of Ellwood City, Pa.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Gary LeMasters of the church will conduct the services at 2 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
